Short answer: I'll believe it when I see it. I love the DS I have right now, and am in no real hurry to get a new one. Even if one were to come out.

um considering nintendo hasn't announced anything about a new handheld system, and considering it takes about a year or 2 for them to complete it after its announced i am quite sure that we will still be playing our ds's for a while. i would get a ds lite, some people dont like how gba games stick out on it but i dont care about that really, its hardly distracting. plus playing gba games on a WAY brighter screen is something to see for yourself, everything looks way cooler compared to the abismal back lit screen on ds phat. so there's my 2 cents.

i would say that unless you work for nintendo it would be very unsafe to unscrew the back of your ds. Send it in, dont try to "do it yourself"

Do you mean if Nintendo is going to make an even "Liter" Lite ( :P ) or a comlpetely new handheld? I don't think there's anything they can make better with the current Lite (nothing that's worth it to make a whole new version of the Lite for, that is), and I think a new handheld from Nintendo is pretty far away. If I had the money, I wouldn't hesitate to get the Lite if I were you.

I kind of agree. I don't think it woul be that long though. I would give it about a year or so until nintendo even talks about a new hand-held system.

Well, according to an IGN Podcast that I've listened to. Nintendo has been able to sucsessfully recreate the Gamecubes Video Card and place it into a handheld. So the "next" DS I would expect to have GC Quality graphicall abilities.
