Miyamoto I think it is more comfortable, more natural. We are creatures of habit. We don't look at our feet when we're walking around, and we're always trying desperately to take in the scenery while we're living our lives. So, even in these games I want people to be able to get really into the 3D geography, so it feels like you're really there, since I think it's a really natural thing to be able to look around while you're walking. At first when we were developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time4, I even proposed using a first-person perspective.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, part of the Legend of Zelda Series, was the first 3D Zelda game for Nintendo 64, and was released in December 1998.

Iwata Ocarina of Time from a first-person perspective!?

Miyamoto I thought that might surprise you! (laughs)

I thought that the FPS system would be the best way of enabling players to take in the vast terrain of the Hyrule Field. Besides, by not having the player's character on the screen, we can spend more time and machine power on creating enemies and the environments.

Iwata During the Nintendo 64 era you had to keep hardware limitations in mind, didn't you?

Miyamoto Well, although I had originally planned to make a game with a first-person perspective, the idea of having a child Link in the game was born, and then it became necessary for the hero to be seen on the screen.

IwataI see. So, if the hero isn't visible on screen, it's really hard to tell the difference between adult Link and the child Link, right?

Miyamoto That, and also the fact that it's a total waste not to have Link visible on screen when he is so cool looking! (laughs) So, we decided to have the hero visible in Ocarina of Time, but I had always thought that FPS games which you could operate from your own perspective were really interesting, so I was proactively supporting such projects like the 007 GoldenEye5 game. 5. GoldenEye 007', a 4-player gun action game with 3D capabilities was released for Nintendo 64 in August 1997

He was already asked and he said that such a dramatic change wont happen. He threw the FP idea to the Zelda team and they refused lol. His idea was implemented in the Metroid Prime series instead

It would be pretty interesting if that actually happened, but I don't think the Zelda team would do it.

if it was fallout 3 style, where you can switch from over the shoulder 3rd person and 1st person, with Wii motion plus, then i'd be okay with that, so long as you still have Z-lock on targeting when in 3rd person mode

who knows guys it could work? if metroid could work zelda could work, all of you saying you wouldn't buy a FP zelda must remember the crow some diehard metroid fans ate after they hated on prime for so long, then played it and saw it captured the spirit of the original metroid games, almost improving upon it.

it would fail...

plus we already have a FPA, and it's Metroid. The only difference between the two is one would be futuristic, and the other would be more old world themed.

There are too many things that would be lost doing a first person Zelda.

Sure Metroid worked well in first person, but also a lot was left behind. First person Zelda?...no thanks.

but zelda can already be put into first person, linkk just can't walk when in it

like i said if it was like oblivion or fallout 3, where link can switch between first and third person, and he could move in first and use wii motion plus, but the game doesn't force you to use first person if you don't want to, (once again like oblivion) then what really would change? nothing. except link could walk in first person mode

what is so mind boggling about this?

there's nothing mind boggling about it to me, I just hope it never happens. It's been part of every game you actually see LINK during the adventure...not just his arms and weapons.

I personally think it's terrbible that the so called GREAT MYAMOTO would even consider this in the first place. SHIGGY it's time to retire!!!! You had a good run, but it's time to let newer, younger, more attuned minds at Nintendo take the games to new places.

seriously, besides how would it work while fighting and controlling the camera at the same time?

How can it be in 1st person? It would be like having a spider-man game in 1st person unless the only weapons were bow and arrow and throwing knives.

OOT had its FPS moments. Like when u used the hook shot or arrows. come on doesn't anyone remember. I know its not completely FP but it had some FP moments. same with MM and WW. Only Zelda game with no FP was TP.

oh thats just what zelda needs... depth perception would suffer with melee weapons, it would be harder to be aware of where enemies are, and how stupid would it look to see a just a hand swinging a sword rather than link. how would sword combos work? rolls? the series would be ruined.

Yeah that "weird" over the shoulder thing.. Like Gears of War and Resident Evil 4. /end sarcasm

From my personal perspective, I thought oblivion was lousy, the first person was uninteresting and contrary to what people are professing, the third person view didn't feel right. So, you were forced to stay in first person.

Now, Link typically has more movement, and first person wouldn't be ideal: multiple hookshots, grappling hooks, puzzle elements that require a full view of the field (block moving for example).

Now, if the option came that you could go from a fluid 1st person to a third person, chances are most Zelda fans would stay in third person. So, trying to make a game in first person would be a full committment, and we'd have no alternative to the fp view.

The Zelda design change I'd assume won't be a view, but rather how the game progresses, the story, and of course production values. Anything drastic would have to be where the adventure took place, or Link can actually jump via button (ala Zelda 2) etc.

part of zeldas charm is its atmosphere and if that drastic of a perspective change were implemented it would feel quite different and could possibly ruin zelda not to mention you would loose a lot of the characters visual perspective when figuring out a puzzle. It worked for metroid but that game had never made the jump to 3D before prime so a big change was expected and it worked because metroid had always revolved around the feeling of being alone in a somewhat deserted place and first person plays off of that well, but zelda usually has a living breathing world with people that link can interact with and seeing him interact with it and them is that much better. Sure oblivion was a great game and worked well as a first person game in a zelda like or mid-evil setting but in third person the character looked rather clunky and the since the world was so big a lot of people that you interacted with felt like mannequins since they really didnt show much emotion other than there voice acting. And i know i dont speak for everyone here but i am just plain sick of first person games, there everywhere.

I remeber reading an article..I don't know maybe a month or so ago over on IGN. Where they asked about Zelda in a first person perspective and they said that it wouldn't happen.
