GameSpot Forumers,
I've been analyzing Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection throughout Mario Strikers: Charged that has just shortly been released to gaming world. I'll admit, Nintendo did sneak up on us with an impressive online system but there is a vast amount of space to be improved on, I'll touch on some things and I hope once everyone fully read through what I have to say and fully comprehend everything they can gain the same perception of the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection that I currently withhold. To begin with; I'll give you a short brief list of the items I'll be discussing about; Communication tools, permanent friend list (or a better friend system), an achievements record, and a few other things to conclude. Like I said, I was taken by surprise when Nintendo brought itself to the online gaming world, so lets get started shall we?
First off lets start with communication tools. Now we know Nintendo hasn't released some-sort of a communication device but logically thinking can they get away with not having one? Of course not, if we realistically think we know something has to be released, and soon. Through playing Mario Strikers: Charged we have adopted enjoyment of playing Wi-Fi with other people around the world, but it was missing one thing? Got it? No? Well then let me explain, this is a headset or a microphone as some people call it. There's been rumour of Nintendo releasing a voice-recognition device that will pick up individual speech and translate into text. But, that's not all. It has been rumoured to have both voice-to-text, and voice-to-voice communication. I cannot confirm this nor do I think anyone can until Nintendo releases some sort of information on it. Well lets get on with it, we know that Mario Strikers: Charged could slide by without having any communication device to accompany the gameplay on Wi-Fi connection. This is because this game isn't team-based, and when you do play with a team-mate he or she will probably be right next to you therefore there is no need for a headset but it would still be fun to have a microphone to communicate with your opponent but it is ultimately not needed. But when team-based tactic, fast-paced, and more then one-on-one games such as; Medal of Honour: Heroes 2, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Battalion Wars 2, Mario Kart Wii and a few others. These games shouldn't be excused without having a headset/microphone. Games like these should be somewhat mandatory to require a microphone to accompany Wi-Fi connection. What I'm trying to say is that this online game line-up should have a headset/microphone with Wi-Fi connection play. This is key to succeed in the online market just like the other items I think it needs to build a great online system. So with out a doubt, I've said what I came to say about the communication device that is needed to make an improved and almighty online system, so lets finally move on with the next thing I've came here to talk about.
So, with the communication tool paragraph out of the way lets start on the Friend List. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection really requires a permanent friend list that can be carried throughout each online game we play. As you can see you're going to need to add everyone's Friend Codes again to have him or her available on your friend roster. This is a big disappointment. Not that the fact that it is a "friend code" necessarily, that is fine. But we shouldn't be forced to re-add a friend every time we purchase a new game that has online play. The Friend Code problem is something that I don't get, everyone says, "Look what the Xbox Live online offers! They don't need to input friend codes!" Well let's share something right now; what's the difference of inputting 12-16 letters or numbers rather then inputting a 12-16-digit code? (Just numbers?) Now what I've said can only be solved if Nintendo does find a way for us to manage our friends better into a more efficient system. This is because no one wants to be put through the hassle of inputting many different digits in just to add one friend, and not have them on their friends list for the next game. Nintendo should wait for their next big firmware update or the next few to make a new change that in the Wii Message Boards where you can send messages, there's the address book where you can add friend onto a list. That list should be available in each game you play, and I'd say it's very possible for this happen please correct me if I'm wrong. But, it probably won't work for the games released before the update. Also, with the whole friend list system out of the way, we need some sort of lobby for each game or for in-game communication so we're "able" to "share" our friend codes with one another! We need to able to "chat" with "everyone" in the game. Not just our friends, and if that's what Nintendo is coming up with well...that's a pretty huge disappointment, again. So hopefully that would be out of the way and we can talk to everyone in the game and not just our friends, which have been manually added. So, again with the friend list system out of the way; lets move on to the next item of my post.
My third suggestion for Wi-Fi Connection improvement is an "Achievement System". As many of you know the Xbox 360 has the Gamerscore and Playstation has their Home system where they can gather trophies and such to get recognition of their achievements. I think we need something like this, but I'm not telling Nintendo or you that they have to copy exactly what they have done, they can mix it up and gather up other ideas but I think we really, really need an achievement system. Something that could give recognition for our accomplishments throughout the games we've played. Though as you know we don't have gamer profile as the 360. So, maybe the achievement score could be shown under our names for games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, or when we push the "1" button or what ever button the pause button is in the game we can share our own achievement records. And not even for public use, with the people with no Wi-Fi or internet connections they can look at their own accomplishments to motivate themselves to complete the game as most as they can, and to unlock things they never dreamed possible with an extra push from the achievement scores. Now, we don't need to call them "achievement scores" if Nintendo does have anything like this in development they can name it anything, as Mario is the Nintendo mascot maybe we get something like "Star Points" and we gather "Star Points" throughout completing or gathering various things that the game has preset for us. By gathering these "Star Points" we can observe our individual scores and how we play games efficiently. Well that's about all I can really say about the "Achievement Scores" and what Nintendo can do to get on top of that.
Like I've said before, I've really enjoyed Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection and all the online it has to offer. I'm just posting this so that maybe someone does agree with me on how it can improve. It's already great, but I think with these new items to be brought to the table it can only get better. I'm not sure how it can really decline. Now, I've posted this for an open discussion. I want to see what you guys and girls think about these suggestions and how they can be put in use in the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection System. So, from here on out I want to hear what you, the GameSpot forumers think about.
So, what are we waiting for? Lets discuss :)
