My impressions:

Nostalgia Artwork

Well, I got the game! And I really like it!

Yeah, I know reviews said that the game lives up to its title. But I don't call that a bad thing at all. As long as the game is fun, good, well-made, and enjoyable, there's nothing wrong with a little familiarity. Besides, isn't most JRPG's sort of recycled and lacking in originality? The good thing is, at least Nostalgia is well made. The screenshots really do it no justice nor does the videos. You have to play the game itself to really see the goodness in the game. It's exactly like FFIII or FFIV remake, which makes sense since it's by the same guys.

Also, I think Nostalgia is much better than Avalon Code. Avalon Code is a good example of trying to be too creative and innovative. And at the end, it didn't turn out the way it should be. But Nostalgia is a good example of playing it safe but making a enjoyable enough RPG that can stand on its own. Sure the formula maybe similar to other RPGs, but the other things about this game like the concept, art **** setting and a alternate fantasy world is original in itself I thought. So those things make up for the cliches.

Anyway, I think it's a great RPG to have on the DS. Another good addition to the other great RPGs on it.

My score so far: 8/10.

Might as well turn this into the official Nostalgia thread. Look here to get latest reviews and info!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So far, Nostalgia has an average of 8 out of 4 reviews. No 1up, Gamespot, IGN, or Gamepro reviews yet, but Game Informer gave it a 8.

http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/nostalgianokaze/review.html?mode=web&tag=scoresummary;critic-score

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE:

IGN Review - 7.2

Well, looks like IGN thought it felt too familiar. Doesn't mean it's a bad game just the same JRPG experience in a steampunk setting.

http://ds.ign.com/articles/103/1039317p1.html

"With the exception of the airship fights and the graded battles, Nostalgia does not innovate much beyond genre roots. It covers familiar territory, although I recognize that to some gamers, the 8- and 16-bit RPG formula may be hallowed ground. But with such a fresh setting, it was ultimately disappointing to see Nostalgia rely on such creaky -- but functional -- ideas like random encounters and basic turn-based battles. I'm sure a hardcore RPG gamer will love how Nostalgia adheres to the past (I can already see "that's why they call it Nostalgia, dummy" comments on the horizon), but I hope a sequel will embrace the last 15 years of RPG innovations." - IGN

So basically, fans of ****c JRPGs will enjoy it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It think this will be pretty good!

I'm looking forward to more reviews.

Also, it's out now! I called Gamestop and they have it! But very limited copies. Get it now if you can!

I'm really excited for this game, but the reviews so far are all over the place in terms of actual content. One of them states its one of the most unique RPGs on the system, while the other three say it's very generic. Then one of the reviews pretty much rips the game apart but then goes ahead and gives it 74%.

Oh well, I'll have to wait for more reviews..plus one of the reviews said it's most similar to Skies of Arcadia, and that's pretty much all I need to know to buy it.

The way it plays out is unique, travelling the world is interesting. The game starts off quickly, you'll have your airship in less than an hour. It has random enemy encounters, and air ship battles are also random though sometimes you see other airships flying.

There is a good skill system; skills can be upgraded with SP points you acquire, air battles are surprisingly deep, you can buy parts and upgrades and some work better in specific circumstances, normal battles are what you'd expect but a turn system which means each attack is chosen individually (you can't just choose attacks for everyone at the same time), so you can strategize which enemy to take out to maybe give yourself an advantage.

It's what you'd expect from an RPG, go to cities talk to people, party chat (which is always welcome), explore. So far I'm enjoying it (3 hours), except at times it feels easy, other times it feels hard if you don't do something the game wants you to.

The one game I wanted this month and my car can't take me to where i want to go. I had it pre-ordered til Game Crazy went away (I got the refund in the form of half-price ds games). So now I need to go more than 2 minutes and I rather don't want to walk on the highway..

But yeah, rpg's with a 7 score but a unique premise usually end up being great or better. And rpg's on ds are becoming way too short-lived on store shelves to wait on something like that.

This is like the third game in a row im going to be ship battling...oh boy.

I wouldn't consider that a bad thing, LOL! Usually, most JRPGs are recycled to some degree. Some better than others. Good thing Nostalgia is one of the good recycled ones.

but it reminds me of some of the original PS1 RPGs, and hence, makes me a little nostalgic.

Bio_Spark

Not the first time I've said that to a DS game.

I said it about three times during phantom hourglass, only without the original tag.

As a self-professed old school, turn-based RPG fanatic; everything I've heard and read about this game sounds absolutely awesome! There was a pretty good write-up in a gamer mag I received in the mail last week, and let me tell ya, I can't wait to get my lanky fingers all over this one!! :D :D

In other news, GT gave it a 7.4

Honestly, it looks good, but a rpg that has dated mechanics ON PURPOSE is a bad idea in my opinion

The only part of the review which worried me was the too many random battles. It drives me crazy when there are back to back random battles in a game.

Yep, it is pretty much like Pokemon when it comes to this, except no Repel (that I know of so far), and some of them are harder than bosses. I done one just now where I used all items to repair my ship, just managed to win... and I don't think the ship levels up; you can only buy parts for it.

Nostalgia just got a 6.0 from GS.

The Good

  • Decent first RPG for a kid
  • Audacious, fantastic idea for an alternate Earth
  • Airship travel right from the start.

The Bad

  • Cardboard characters in service to an equally cardboard story
  • Mind-numbingly simple combat
  • Mindless and repetitive side quests.

Nostalgia is charming. The graphics are bright and move crisply, and the inspiring character design rises above the game's other issues. Each character has an interesting look that seems appropriate for the world Nostalgia occupies. The sound design isn't as inspired, but the audio clearly communicates whether you're in a fight, in a dungeon, in a town, or on your airship. Nostalgia's creators have a lot of experience working on the DS platform, and their technical proficiency shows.

There is a virtue to accessibility and ease of play, and Nostalgia could be an excellent product for a young gamer who doesn't need combat with any more depth than pressing "attack" and remembering to heal. The players who are going to enjoy this game don't need a world so detailed that they might actually get lost while exploring and they also don't need villains who are more than simply whipping boys for a "save the world" plot's needs. For anyone who seeks depth or challenge, though, Nostalgia simply never takes off.

I actually agree with the review. I would give this to my cousins to play.

The main character pissed me off to no end. I just wanted to grab him and slap him to common sense. The others didn't annoy me as much although Melody... felt like another 'Eddie' The story or lack of, made me want to do maths homework. I hated the camera and just not being able to look at the surroundings while in a dungeon. Also the control for moving the air ship made me want to chuck my DS at my wall a few times.

But the graphics were good, the leveling system didn't make me throw away the game and i loved customizing the skills. I loved the airship, which is probably the only reason why i keep playing this game. Oh and for the graphics and to see which countries they will do. I think i'm so disappointed in Nostalgia for the simple reason, i've been anticipating this game for months.

This is what annoys me about JRPG. You can watch videos online, read some info, but you can never tell how good it's gonna be until you play it.

I thought some parts were easy and then other parts were really hard. But I sometimes went to places that I wasn't suppose to go at the time like when I was suppose to be in the Tower of Babel I went to Saint Petersburg.

I personally never rely on critics' scores or reviews. I find user reviews much more reliable.;) I still plan on buying this game, because to me, it looks like it will be a lot of fun!

The airship battles can be pretty brutal if you get unlucky.

"No, I'm sorry. You don't get to attack for a dozen turns while these crows chain-stun you and chip away at your life. Enjoy the game over screen!"

Bio_Spark

If you have one the Orb weopon that you buy in Rio. It never gets that problem so I have to keep attacking or using items to heal my Airship while nobody else can attack.
