The Original Wii GOTY for 2008

Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars, releasing(rumored) October 15, 2008.

It features, based on what I've seen of it, the best graphics of any Wii game thus far, even besting top titles such as SMG, SSBB, and MP3:Corruption. The scale and level design just screams originality and wit, and the plot is just too clever for words.

Game doesn't even touch Galaxy and Prime 3 graphically, I don't see how it can best them.

Gameplay looks really sketchy at this point, I wouldn't be hyping it that much, especially not as GoTY when it needs to compete with SSBB, No More Heroes, Mario Kart and whatever Nintendo has planned for the rest of this year.

SSBB and MK aren't original games, they are entries in an established franchise.

And I have to disagree with you, metroid. While I own both MP3 and SMG, and think they are superb graphically, from the gameplay videos available I think this is much better, and will take the Wii to new heights.

Uh...okay. By that logic though, you could say that about any game, technical sequel or otherwise. Therefore according to that there is no "Original" GOTY for the Wii.

As in the poll, NMH, MM:SP, and Boom Blox are new ideas, they are no games of the same series preceding them.

Clearly, original games exist. Mushroom Men is an original game.

Oh, and about the SMG:MP3 v. MM screenshots. Yes, based on those images, MM is inferior. But, based on seeing the game in-motion, I think it is the best-looking game on the Wii. Just my personal opinion, though. And thanks for reminding me how beautiful MP3 looks, really made my day.

How can you say Mario 64 was a completely original game? Have you never played Super Mario Brothers? Or Super Mario Brothers 2? Or Super Mario Brothers 3? Or Super Mario World? Clearly you haven't, otherwise you would realise that Mario 64 was a 3-D incarnation of what had already been done.

Aside from something that constitutes as an entirely new genre, pretty much every game falls into some sort of category that had been made by games that had preceded it.

I think No more Heroes will be better (as Mushroom Men hasn't come out yet). But thats just me. I predict Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars will be decent but not great. Gamecock Media Group doesn't have that good of a track record when releasing games. Such hits as Fury (PC) and Dementium: The Ward (DS) have failed to leave their mark as memorable games (maybe low scores had something to do with it). The videos I saw didn't impress me at all. Zach and Wiki beats this game in puzzles greatly and the instant respawn at one location is overly simple. The game reminds me of that game where you play as a small trash collecting robot or that game where you play as a mouse.

You're not getting my point.

I don't mean original in terms of a game's mechanics/concept, I mean original as in the first game of a series. To simplify, the first game with its title. Basically, a game with no other game made under the same banner. NMH didn't follow a previous NMH, SM64 didn't follow a previous SM game, they were the first game with that title.

Yes, there have been other 3rd-person platformers. No, there haven't been any earlier Mushroom Men titles. Therefore, though maybe not original in concept, it is an original IP.

So because random games don't work and there's no rankings that means the entire game is broken?

I guess we'll just ignore the perfect sound, great graphics/animation, spectacular gameplay, and endless replay value, that's insignificant in determining if a game is well-polished. :|

Online hasn't gotten better? The first Wi-Fi game for the Wii was Pokemon: Battle Revolution, and had extremely lackluster online. Then, Super Mario Strikers Charged came online and gave the Wii's online MP some hope. Later, SSBB and BWii delivered solid online as well, and MOHH2 really delivered a fun online FPS. Finally, MKWii just released and took the bar up a notch, seriously illuminating the future of Wi-Fi.

On the horizon are games such as Timesplitters 4 and The Conduit, which hopefully will both feature strong online MP.

This is probably a little biased since some games aren't out yet, but I'd have to say No More Heroes since it's taken the most risks. The story and characters are INSANE (in a cool way), the cel-shaded art style makes the game stand out, and the gameplay improves on previous sword-wielding FPSword games.

Boom blox may be fun, but graphically it's simple and it sticks to an already proven formula (basically jenga).

Mushroom men doesn't look to impress graphically although it looks like an interesting title. I'll have to reserve further judgement until the game comes out.

Blast Works, I've yet to play.

Guitar hero IV with its addition of drums, vocals, bass, song creator and uploader, more in-depth character and instrument creator, and im sure much much more, it will kick so much ass.AndresV03

What difficulty do you think they would have adding all this in or what individually do you think they will have trouble adding?

Despit how great it is, Boom Blox couldnt win because gamespot gave it a 7.0. Not many reviews for blast works yet, but it looks fantastic.

EDIT: It was delayed til june?! I just noticed that. Thats why the store didnt have it and there arent many review then...

I would have to say my favorite game released this year (behind SSBB) was No More Heroes. Everything from the completely over-the-top story to the gorgeous cell shading makes this game so much fun to play. Not too many take it seriously, but I think it is one of the best single-player action games in recent memory.

Mushroom Men looks ok and could easily be this year's Psychonauts, the best game that nobody plays. I am personally more excited about Tales of Symphonia II and Stars Wars: Force Unleashed, but those are obviously not original titles.
