The Rumour: New model DS to be launched in Japan next spring. Reports from Japan suggest Nintendo will build a digital TV tuner into the new hardware revision.

Verdict: Nintendo is a shrewd company and the people in charge know that people will keep buying their hardware if they change it. Changing the colour seems to do the trick most of the time, but to capture the second sale of the slightly less hardcore Nintendo fan a real hardware change is in order. A digital TV tuner would be functional and appeal to the geek market. Sadly the rumour seems to originate from Gamelabo magazine, which is well known for running with rather unsubstantiated rumours, casting serious doubt on this new DS ever appearing.

I doubt Nintendo would do that, and even if it does it, I'll keep my original DS

They already planned an optional addon that was a digital tv tuner. It would make the DS larger more battery draining, drive up the cost. Sorry don't buy the rumour.

A TV tuner being added to the US-DSLite might be just about the stupidest thing to doconsidering the US is phasing out analog signals in 2009. Would this TV tuner receive HD over-the-air signals? Probably not.

The DSLite is perfectly fine. Leave it the way it is.

The thought of having a T.V tuner sounds great, but it probably is just a rumor. Though I think it should havesome sort ofsystem for watching movies like the PSP.

I'd just go back in time about 10 years and buy this terrible idea for my Game Gear. I had it then, it sucked and I sold it.

Besides, who wants to pay to watch low quality channels 2-13 on a tiny screen anyway?

If Nintendo were to plan this, I'd disencourage them. It's like GB Micro all over again!

Where did you hear 'the rumor'? ---and anything is possible but why would watching tv on a 3 inch screen be a step forward?

I would love this.

My DS Lite is wearing out anyways, and to replace it with a newer one with more functionality would be ideal. My hinge just cracked, my R button is insconsistent, and I have some minor scratches on the touch screen. I'd keep my old one for multiplayer and such, but I really want one with TV/radio functionality.

I'm not saying that they'll pick up HD signals or anything, but I think the key word is "digital". It's entirely possible that this new DS could feature a way to display the signal in a lower resolution.

I'm not entirely sure what everyon'e getting so worked up about.

I'm not saying that this will happen, but what could possibly be the downside if it did? Why is it a bad thing to be adding functionality (so long as it doesn't affect the price)?

It's not going to be a "focus on multimedia rather than games" thing like the early days of the PSP, because the DS is already pretty well-established in the market. It's obviously a gaming cash-cow for Nintendo and third-parties alike, and I don't think anyone would be ignoring those billions of potential dollars by focusing on TV features.

If they do, they're just a little too hypnotized by the stack of millions coming in every month. I have a perfectly good DS Lite, so I don't need another. If it has a brighter screen, you will fry out your eyes by the time Wii gets Super Smash Bros Brawl if the new DS comes out today

Nada, Nintendo said awhile back that they have no intention of releasing a new handheld anytime in the near future, as the DS Lite is it's pretty little cash-cow as is.

It's definately a rumor.

I doubt Nintendo would do that, and even if it does it, I'll keep my original DScfamgcn

The GBA, GBA SP, GBA SP+ with backlight and the Gameboy Mico. You're right, Nintendo would never release another model.

First of all...this probably wouldn't even work in the U.S. Second...that's very un-Nintendo-like so I doubt it'd happen.
