For me the DS has run its course, its had four revision in quick succession each time very minor upgrades apart from screen, case etc. However looking at the Game Boy its twenty year streak shows how much people believe in the brand. Also Nintendo hasn't commented on whether the Game Boy is dead or not, the last revision being in 2005 I think. And Nintendo did say that its still part of the three pillar business strategy.

Personally, I would love to see a brand new Game Boy, actually more than a DS 2, because of the sheer enjoyment over the years that the Game Boy, GB Color, GBA and its revisions gave me. Particularly with the PokeMon games - also fingers cross with a new console comes the fifth generation of PokeMon games.

Any ideas??

I agree. The Game Boy would make an awesome comeback but it would have to be up-to scratch with the ds's technology but hey a Game Boy's a Game Boy

No wonder many people think of "The Handheld That Reads Disks" and the DS are often mistakened as Game Boys -_-

I agree, the GameBoy name has done damage so badly that it's taken the DS years just to fix some of it and it's still an uphill climb

GameBoy, like it or not, sounds like a toy and that does not make adopters of all ages eager to grab one

Now on the other hand the very simple DS (and all of it's enhancements) doesn't sound bad. There's no age involved, heck there's not even game playing involved in the name.

I would be shocked to see Nintendo ever go back to the GameBoy name. It was fine back in the day when only children could play games without scorn but these days with Nintendo trying to expand the market they wont have anything labeled in a way that could make people wonder about buying one.

I hope you guys noticed that there's far too many "2" rumors. PSP 2 and now DS 2, i think it's just a rumor. But i could be wrong.

To those saying that the name "game boy" sounds too childish, think of the psp and ps3. Play-Station. and as far as I know the psp and ps3 are owned by adults more than other consoles "or maybe that's just the notion i got"

Like it or not, I highly doubt the name Game Boy will ever see the light of day again, at least not under that brand. With the introduction of the Wii and the DSi XL, Nintendo has reached out for a new demographic (and sales proved successful). By introducing a new console with a name such as "Game Boy", they will surely be annihilating their oh so coveted "casuals". In my opinion, it will either be a Nintendo ---, Nintendo DS with a new suffix, or an entirely new console with an interesting new name that still appeals to casual gamers.

I think it would be weird to go back to a GameBoy, especially if that meant going back to 1 screen. Even though some DS games dont utilize the touch screen, I've grown used to having the gameplay on one screen, while the other shows inventory/items/stats/etc.

Damage? Without Gameboy there would be no DS, kids of the 90s were addicted to this and sold plenty thus paving the way of the handheld market. Those kids grew up and some of them happens to play DS while catering to the new kids, it takes time this is a progression if Nintendo starting out with something not "gameboy" they would had not captured the young audience, I mean back then adults and games isnt much of a match until now.

However I do agree that the time between Gameboy and now has been far too long that people would forget about it and view it as a joke, is progression here when Nintendo made the ambitious sensing move for the console. DS 2? Thats too easy something Sony/Playstation will call their plats. I can easily see a different name with a major facelift to this successor.

Edit: Ninty!! Quit milking 2d Pokemon I want 3Deee!!!

Disagree!! The Game Boy did not damage! Over 100 million unites sold... Made Nintendo the money to then go on design the DS, if there is going to be a new handheld it should be a game boy, or at least update the Game Boy line plus the DS so people once again see the Game Boy brand in retail!

It's not damaging sales, obviously. What it damages is people's impressions of the system and the people who play it. A device with the words 'game' and 'boy' in the title is connotative of a toy/children's plaything, rather than a gaming system with widespread and mass appeal.

I could kind of see the "DS 2" as being the bottom half of the system only (all of the buttons still there, touch screen possible).

This would make it a bit easier for making use of the accelerometer (if they decide to put one in).

ya i dont see nintendo staying with dual screens forever perhaps create a single multitouch screen . i just hope to never see them go the itouch route were they get rid of buttons and do everything onscreen, i wont even buy it if that were to occur and i wouldnt buy another handheld from them untill buttons were added back in :P

I think that is the aspect that Nintendo should take for the new Game Boy... Then leave the DS dual screen

"what's in a name?" I don't care about the name, but I'd rather have a GBA style system than a DS style system, and I think most would agree. I want something simple, plane and normal more than anything. I want a dual analog controller that will be able to fit controls for GC games easily and have GC/Wii ports, and I want it to be cartridge with a clam shell, basically a modernized GBA SP. I would be happy to have backwords compatability all the way back to original GB games with a touch screen to make DS games compatable, and better internet connections than DS(dare I say better than PSP). They could call it wii wii as long as they make it modernized, and actually upgrade the graphicsat least to wii quality.

i think this idea is the best idea for a new Game Boy! Maybe not GC/Wii ports but definatelyGB/GBC/GBA game compatibility

The DS IS the successor to the Gameboy line of products. Nintendo deemed the "Gameboy" brand to no longer apply to the market. 1) It may be seen as a very lightly politically incorrect title (girls can play too!) 2) They want to expand the DS beyond just games, by making it compatible for wireless connectivity, notepad, camera, browser functionalities. The DS is now more successful than any other handheld gaming product, including the Gameboy line of products. Nintendo will continue on with this name, because it now has a brand recognition that is guaranteed to captivate a MUCH larger target market than the Gameboy, which was marketed particularly with young boys in mind. The DS is now recognized by soccer moms, grandparents, and girls. It's no longer Gameboy. It has evolved, for better or for worse.

Honestly, Game Boy sounds like a stupid name in America nowadays. I mean, what kid (and most adults who weren't playing game boys when they were a child) would think them having a game boy would be a cool thing? Maybe 10 years ago it was fine but now people are changing. Playstation is a different story. Also, Nintendo, for the DS2, will most likely stick to the double screen clamshell design because of how popular it has been. People bought a DS for the two screens, and touch capabilities. It's what makes the DS unique and fun, and what makes it sell as much as it sells. We already have an iPod Touch for no button touch gaming devices, and we already have a single screen gaming device, the PSP. Also the DS2 will be coming this or year next year because SOny is currently developing the PSP2, and as history has shown, Nintendo wants there console out before everyone else to avoid competition. In my opinion, the DSi and the XL is just a middle ground, just like the Gameboy Micro was.

Wii wii sounds like wiwi, which is a slang term for pee in the Tagalog language.

Why would anyone think the DS is more mature based on the name? Both the DS and the GB have the same games (pokemon, mario, zelda, ect.), with the small exception of touchscreen central games. People who didn't like the games on the GB aren't going to buy a DS just because of the name, and anyone who would want to only play touchscreen games can get an iPhone.

I don't care what they're gonna name for their next handheld. As long if they're playable.
Also... well... the name. Whenever we think of a handheld, the first thing ever to pop into my mind is Gameboy. I grew up and got attatched to that name for sooooo long. Maybe... just maybe, Nintendo might come up with a slightly different name, something that holds the original name with... a TWIST! :P
Wiiwii sounds funny by the way. Hahahaha!
But wait, what if they're gonna host the naming contest? I bet many of you would come up with something, right?
Soon, cool names would all be used up and somebody needs to come up with a clever title.

I agree with Brainhunter. I always thought that the DS was the successor to the Game Boy. Besides, wouldn't Nintendo be working backwards if they released a new Game Boy handheld with one screen and none of the functionality and features the DS brought to the table? The Game Boy is dead.

I don't think we'll see a totally new Nintendo handheld soon, there's yet DSi XL to be sold and I don't think Nintendo's going to make the same mistake as they did with the GB micro.

If N released micro a bit earlier it would be a total sell out, but gamers new that time for a new handheld generation is in near future.

If Nintendo truly learned the lesson I say it is far for the new DS/GB.

anyway..

Looking at the past handheld and stationary systems from N, I think it's name will be something like "DS + new feature" or they'll come up with a totally new name.

What about a new Game Boy that is for younger people or others who want to play a console with a smaller footprint and easier to hold than a DS. Like the colour or advance???

I could kind of see the "DS 2" as being the bottom half of the system only (all of the buttons still there, touch screen possible).

This would make it a bit easier for making use of the accelerometer (if they decide to put one in).

I agree! It would be nice if it had just 1 touch screen, and with new features, like motion sensitive (like that GBA wario ware thingy), be able to play videos, downloadable games and such.

I think that sounds awesome! The only problem with that would be that it probably wouldn't be able to have backwards-compatibility with DS games.

A GameBoy was fine when I was six years old, liked bright colours, Pikachu, and any game that Disney put out there.

As a teenager who's developed some sort of decent taste in games, I wouldn't feel that a GameBoy is being marketed to me. Hence I would not get one. My much younger brother on the other hand, may. Nintendo is actually starting to reel hardcore gamers back in on the Wii, releasing a ressurected GameBoy would kill them on handlhelds with the hardcore crowd. Just keep the DS for now.

Expect them to announce that the DS Lite is being discontinued this year. Hopefully we'll begin to see a "virtual console" for the DSi that will start to build up a back catalog of GB and GBA titles.

It should be a new DS with Game Boy slot and/or virtual console with Game Boy games. Especially the old Pokemon games.

I feel like it should be a design similar to the standard GBA or the SP. Add a large-ish OLED screen, keep the controls of the DS (all of the face and shoulder buttons), and possibly make the screen touch. Call it the GameBoy . Yes.

It should be a crossbreed between Gameboy and DSi. Like a totally new system with a totally different name and features.

I don't care how childish it seems. I'd like the name back for some nostalgia.

Gameboy is a terrible name. I like "Nintendo DS" better. Then again, I also like "revolution" better than "wii"
