What's the Wii's failure rate?

When I bought my 360, I had to buy a 2-year warrenty at best-buy just so that I wont have to worry about sending the thing to microsoft if I ever got the three red lights. Same thing when I bought my PS2 a while back during the disc read error scare.

But what about my wii? Just got it 2 days ago, and I was wondering if I should have bought another warrenty.

Or can I sleep easy knowing that Nintendo built put durability/quality into this white box?

Not that much of a waste, my brother bought his around December and last month it started making a loud whirring sound and get's errors when he plays a wii game for a while. He hasn't sent it in yet for repairs cause he mostly just plays vc games. Point is fairlures are not common but they do happen as with all electronics. It really depends on how paranoid you are or how much of a hassle sending it in really is to you.

Well I'm actually constantly afraid of my Wii malfunctioning especially as I got it in December of 2006 and it tends to overheat at times. I swear my Wii can get much hotter than my 360 once repaired lol.

A little off topic but honestly I wouldn't be worried about it. It should be fine.

That happened with MP3:c to me. It don't really mind, just take out the disk and insert it again, then continue the game.

I got the warranty when I bought it (Jan 2007) so teh warranty is no longer valid.

Do I regret it?? no.. it help me sleep at nights...

I never turn off my Wii (is always on standby mode) exc for 4 month taht I spend out of my country... I have never had a error, exc a couple of days ago, I was going to start playing RE UC and when I selected START the screen went black.. I assume that I did some funny thing instead of waiting for teh warning of the wiimote.. I turn it off (had to unplugged it) and turn it on again... all is good..

My advice?? get the warranty just in case. And after that N has a pretty good repai/customer service :)

To the TC and anyone that has not done this. Go to my.nintendo.com and join. After you join register your Wii and your warranty will be extended another 90 days on top of the 1 year warranty gives you. On top of that you can link your My Nintendo account to the shop channel and when you by VC games, they will be registered on the site. This will also help if you ever need to send the Wii in for repairs and end up needing a new one because you will have proof you downloaded the games.

False, Nintendo only gives you a 12 month warranty out of the box: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/manuals/warrantyinfo.jsp To get an extended 90 days on your warranty you need to do what I mentioned earlier. It is described here: http://register.nintendo.com/registerwii/

To turn on or off WiiConnect24, you need to go to the settings menu and on the 3rd page there should be something that says WiiConnect24. If you are online you will be able to turn this on. When you shut of the Wii with the Wii Remote, the light will go from green to an orange. If it is not turned on, the light will go from green to red.

I had to send mine in for artifacting. It comes with a one year warranty that I extended by registering. They fixed it for free and extended my warranty another year from the repair date. You probably won't have the need to purchase any extra warranty from the retailer.

You can trust Nintendo on this one, that is if you don't damage it constantly like I did(explained later), Yes, it's true the Wii DOES get overheated over time but that won't cause it any problems as the wii's internal pieces are built to resist the heat from the Wii. I bought my on launch day, the first day the wii kept on crashing sometimes but the day after Nintendo released an update to fix the problems some Wiis had at launch and it worked wonderfully for all, except for Metroid prime 3 that requiered some loading times here and there and you could hear some clicking inside but that's apparently normal, until late 2007 when my wii got knocked over my shelf and did a 3 foot fall, from then on it has this loud buzzing noise, long loading times and sometime crashes on certain games, some of my freinds had the exact same problem which apparently was a loose disk drive and he got it repaired right away, unfortunatly that information came in too late and my warranty is now gone and Im afraid i'll have to send in my wii and pay for the repairs...

The worst thing I've heard that's happened to a Wii is the graphics card might screw up a bit and scramble the graphics (very mildy) but other than that, the Wii is a well made machine.

Failure rate is less than 1%, and you get a 1 year warrenty from nintendo when you get the console. -- also, like Shark2k6 said, if you register on nintendo website and register your Wii, your contract gets extended 90 days and they can keep track of your Wii Shop purchases, once you link your account from the Wii Shop Channel.

dude it doesnt really matter if ur a unlucky person an u get a poorly made wii (like me) that warranty would come in handy i would still buy a warranty just in case thats why u have insurance for ur car u might not get in a accident or crash but its good to no that ur covered if certain things happen.

It's a console that doesn't end in a 3 digit number, it's got superb reliability. 1 year 4 months without a single problem for me. My NES, SNES, N64, and GC are all quite healthy too :)

You have a 1 year free repair warrenty automatically from Nintendo when you buy a Wii. They extend it 3 more months if you register it at nintendo.com. If you start getting issues just call customer service and they will have you send the wii in. They repair it for free and in a few weeks you get it back with a new 1 year warrenty.

I've had the problem that Your wiimote gets disconnected and won't reconnect until after a while, or 'till You unplug the console...
That had me worried. It happened twice in the first two months or so. Guess the updates fixed it cause everything's fine for over a year now.
Ow and mine has fallen 3 feet or so, twice, and the wiimotes too. It even bounced a bit, yet everything works.
Nintendo is pretty nice to customers. My sister knows that all too well.
Basically there's no need to think about it.
It's just that some people tend to get hit by meteors and others don't.

Don't bother, warranties are the biggest money makers for stores for a reason. I bought a couple in the past and never uesed them. I figure now that the money lost on unused warranties will level off with the occacional need purchase of a replacement product. I would buy one for a 360 though.

My Wii shut itself down once--once in the entire year plus that I've had it--because it got too hot. I'm actually mad that I bought a warranty for mine and I haven't bothered to renew it--though I do fear having to replace it if it should happen to break because the damn things are never available in stores.

Now my PS3 on the other hand, I don't feel bad about the 2-year warranty I bought for that, not because I'm afraid it will break, but because anything can happen, and that was just a bit too much money to spend on something and not protect it.

Nintendo makes the most reliable consoles, hands down. My NES still works as well as the controls, as well as my SNES and GC.

BUT...

Just this past week my Wii has had trouble reading discs. I called support, and they said unplug everything for a period of time. I did it overnight.

It worked, but then started making a rough noise. Now, it doesn't read disks at all and I have call Nintendo in to get fixed. Mine is a launch unit as well.

The failure rate is nothing like the 360. I've had mine for over a year now and its still going strong. My friend gets a disc error sometimes, but it's nothing major, all he does is turns the Wii off and turn it back on and its good to go. So other then a occasional disc error, I haven't seen much else from the Wii. Plus, Nintendo has wonderful customer service and they are beyond friendly, so I think you're okay.
