I had completly written this game off based on the supposed "hip-hop" soundtrack, the whole fashion/brand motif the game had, and most importantly, Tetsuya Nomura's god awful character designs. However, I found it cheap, and I needed some new games to take with me overseas, so I picked it up. I started playing it, and right when I was introduced to Neku and his brooding "I hate everyone, kill me" attitude I thought "great, another one". However, I stuck with it. And now, I absolutely love it. I didn't think that brands/fashions/trends were just euphamisms for equipment, and how they're worked into battles add an unexpected level of depth and strategy. The sound track which really grated on me at first has grown on me like a cancer. Many times when "Calling" pops up, I gotta stop and let it loop a few times before I continue. Also, part of me wants to just stop playing to power level my pins, but at the same time I can't stop playing. It's the first RPG in a very very long time where I want to fight, and I enjoy it. I like having the option to challenge myself by dropping my level, and jacking up the difficulty to see if I can do it and get more, better pins. I'm almost done witih the second week, and as predicted, Neku's become more likeable, but at the same time the story itself has really developed in a way I wouldn't have expected. I hear there's a pretty involving eplogue quest. I'm curious to try it out.
Btw, am I alone of thinking of Persona when I play this? It takes place in present day Japan, with regular teens with supernatual powers fighting a mysterious presence. It has an off-kilter soundtrack that's difficult to pin down (Ha...pin). I dunno, I think of Persona.
Anyway, amazing game. Definately the best DS game I've played so far, but to be fair, I haven't played too many.
