i'm thinking of buying a used DS from gamestop, either the old fat one or the slim one, but that's not my question.. i'm getting it to play some rpg's on the go and maybe planning on getting chrono trigger later. but is it worth getting one now becuase the ds is so old and nintendo may come out with a new handheld soon? would it be smart to be a new ds owner in so late?..

Well, obviously there's the DSi coming out on November 1st in Japan, which you could potentially get hold of but it would cost you. If you want a DSi then it's best to wait until it comes out in possibly Spring 2009. Although, to be honest the DSi isn't going to offer much that will completely change your gaming experience. I would strongly recommend the DS Lite. The old DS just isn't the same and will not only hurt your hands but offer a lower gaming quality.

You can pick a DS Lite up for $130 new which is pretty good. Although you can get a used one for $80 I'd personally think it's worth the exra money for a brand new one.

Whichever way you choose to do it I'd think that getting a DS Lite now would be worth it. There's a wealth of games available and I like I said the DSi is quite far off.

the old ds doesnt hert your hand, the stylus does. And quite frankly, the DSlite is more prone to be broken from a fall. I would say buy a DSi, there is no big games comming out from now untill the DSi comes out. If you can't stand it buy an original DS, (the DSi is only 5 months away:l) the original will be a good buy and right now it is underestimated;)

Get a new DS lite now, i got mine on Friday.

If you want a DSi youll have to wait some months and pay more. i dont think its worth the wait, it wont have too much new things and i doesnt read GBA games, wich is bad considering there are lots of great GBA games and now they are really cheap.

theres really no point in getting an old DS (grey) now, unless you are really short on money. i dont think the price difference is that big, and its much bigger and has a much less bright screen see this video for a comparission.

about getting a used DS lite, i dont know about the price difference, but its probably better to get a new one for just some bucks more.

Nintendo is only just getting ready to release the latest iteration in the DS lineup(the DSi), so i think it's a safe bet that we're more then a year away from a new handheld by nintendo. I'd say, with the amount of stellar games out now for the DS, it's more then worth investing in one now. Besides, Nintendo is only just beginning to explore some extra features of the DS(nintendo points, downloadable stuff) and connectivity with the wii.. it really makes me think we've got a couple years before the DS2

There's not much to think about, just get a DS lite.

If you get a used one make sure the touch screen isn't too scratched up.

I think you'd have to be more open to other genres as well before buying a DS. Of course you have the classic JRPGs like the FFs and DQs. And also rpgs like Mario and Luigi PiT and the other Square-Enix titles (Children of Mana is a dungeon crawler though) would probably be worth checking out.

But still, please consider games with rpg elements like the Castlevania series, Zelda, and the upcoming Fire Emblems. And maybe you could go a step beyond that and try games like Advance Wars, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Center etc. etc. .

If you would want to stick to classic JRPGs only, I would hesitate to give you a 'go out and buy' advise.

Definitely get a DS Lite, and like another user said, check to make sure the screen isn't scratched. If you go to Gamestop they should let you check it before you buy it.

Is it worth it? Well, for being an RPG fan, dirktu has a good point. If you went beyond the RPG scope, there will be 3,000 DS games total come Dec-Jan time frame. If you learn to read Japanese or by using a translation guide online, there's more RPG options available to you. So yes, it is worth it. As previously stated though, be wary of buying used- dead pixels are more common than you might think!
