Now, it will probably sell well in Japan (those obsessed technophiles will love anything that includes technological wizardry even if there are better options) but as for other places...

I mean wow, I'm just shocked that Nintendo actually went through with this. I first and foremost have to eat my words about them not releasing a new handheld until it has greater capabilities and... stuff. I can't see the new added camera type thing as anything but a gimmick, and I thought they'd learn that having a bunch of multimedia options never really did sell many units (looking at Sony here, with boththeir systems)

I'm just in shock right now so I may not have my facts straight, but the only way this new DS will be highly successful is if Nintendo do indeed put a type of DS vitual console store, making us able to download gbc and gba games (as well as the fact that they now have sd slots and can take in higher memory right?)

Because if that's true... wow. The possibilties. All the games I missed last gen and couldn't find in stores would be at my disposal. I'd be so happy... and to be able to download the game boy color ****cs... (I hope you know what word that is, apparently it's censored by gamespot for obscure reasons)

Er any comments? I'm baffled at Nintendo's decision more than anything else and probably don't have a few things right so I welcome any help on your part :)

EDIT: I also don't know if the gba micro tanked, as I don't have my facts straight. It's just that I never even heard of the thing, similar to how the silly E-reader went by without my noticing, and it's only what I've seen from other users stating that the gba micro was a failure.

Why? It replaces the current Lite, costs the same and plays the same software. No Lite owner needs to buy it and for everybody else who doesn't have a DS already it's a nice update.

The Micro had two flaws: 1) It really didn't offer anything new (indeed it was less functional since it couldn't play GB or GBC games), and 2) When it launched it was forced to compete with the DS (which had been out for almost a year.)

And yes, it seems pretty clear that there will be downloadable games for the DSi.

I don't think it'll fail. Sure, sales aren't going to be massive like the original's and Lites launches but there's enough features to get people interested. Plus DS sales are always high, people will move from wanting Lites to DSi's fairly quickly. The GBA Micro, I feel, came way too late into the GBA's lifespan, and really? There wasn't a need for it. The GBA SP was perfect and didn't need any more modification. It didn't really entice anyone with anything new and even though it still sold pretty well (I think) I doubt it even came close to what the SP did.

The GBA Micro didn't bomb, but it was just a super simplified version of the GBA. The DSi is a super version of the DS, which makes it much better. Many people who already have a DS and/or Lite are still going to get it, which already means massive sales. Now imagine those who don't have either DS. Even....massiver sales. The new functions will attract a much larger audience than before and with good marketing, people won't even think about buying PSP anymore. DSi for the win.

No it's not the same price; I believe it's, what, $30 higher? After all, this is Nintendo we're talking about, not desperate Sony. They can charge as much as they want since they know people are going to buy their products.

In any case, it's way too early to speculate about this new iteration of the DS. Guess we'll have to wait and see what becomes of it. But if it turns out there's no VC for hanheld games then I really won't be bothering with this one, everything else is just pretty much gimmicky and can be done better elsewhere

I doubt it. Bigger screens, better speakers, and more features are looking good. Personally I'm not too excited for the SD card support and on-board memory and photo taking, but just about everyone is loving any or all of those features, so I'm sure it's going to sell quite well.

It didn't bomb! It had massive sales because it appealed to people who wanted a small, portable, cheap console with cheap games. Obviously more people bought the DS, but the Micro did have it's audience.

I am super excited about the DSi especially cos it has the possiblility of downloading GBA games! I REALLY REALLY hope that nintendo is smart enuff to realise tt opening a vc for dsi shop channel would boost the sales tremendously(I CAN PLAY ALL THE GBC LoZ i missed!!!)as many people would want to play old GBA games and this would now be possible without having to jerk the cartridge into the slot! But then again, what if the new ds is not built to do this bcause SOMEBODY thoought that this was not a good idea, or did not even think of it in the first place....Err i am stilll wondering why the DSi has bigger screens when the graphic quality is the SAME....would this not do the opposite of what gameboy micro did and cause grpahics to be blurr? if u want to know more about the DSi go to http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/conference2008fall/presen/e/02.html oya and i personally feel that nintendo will , i repeat WILL dissapoint all us ninfans and WILL not put up vc on DSi shop , because its so much more fun too just play brainage!!!! wow SOOO FUN!!! SCREW GBA I HAVE BRAINAGE!!!!!

There's no way the DSi will bomb... I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes.

The GBA Micro was released right at the end of the GBA's lifespan, which explains the sales. The DS still has a couple more years of running power, and leaves enough time for the new model to still do very well.
I'll likely be getting one, seeing as I still have a phat DS, as I'm sure a lot of people in my position will. Even those with DS Lites might still be tempted; after all, plenty of people upgraded from a phat to a lite.

The micro only had a smaller size and a brighter screen. The DSi has a slightly bigger screen, a camera, a media player and SD card support, and you might need the on-board memory for some games. So this should sell very well.

I think what people are missing here is the possibilities.

Having your own music on your DS means you can play a game like ELIITE BEAT AGENTS to whatever song like. Having a Camera could make for some really kick-ass minigames. There are hundreds of different things you could do with the DSi that other portables can't.

I think the main reason people are complaining is just because they already bought a DSlite not long ago. Apple puts out a new model of the iPod almost twice a year, nobody is complaining about that.

Well, for people who held out on the DSlite (like me), this sounds like a pretty sweet deal.

The DS-I is exactly what I was waiting for. SD card means music, photos and virtual console games on the DS. That is a ton of games. DS-I is bringing a lot more to the table than GBA micro. I think it will be very successful. I'm buying one. Maybe two.

The DSI has the same problems. It can't play GBA games, use he rumble pack, or even use the Guitar Hero add on.

DSi fail? I don't think so, especially if the cost stay's below $200 (it's only selling for $180 in Japan). The camera gimicky? Just because it may be included in future games, doesn't mean you can't use it as a normal point&shoot (its going to be 3MP, right? you can still get decent photos with that - better than most camera phones). Besides, this upgrade is much better than PSP's brighter screen and improved UMD tray and memory card slot.

There are so many things wrong in this post I had to comment. 1. No you can't just put any tune on your DS and have elite beat agents work - the dancing and touch points are programmed to the specific song. 2. How would having a camera make for fun mini-games..?? Take a picture scavenger hunt or something? Useless/gimicky IMO. 3. Nobody complains about the ipods every year..really?? I don't think you hang around in the right circles if you really believe that. I could see how this could be considered an upgrade from the phat, but from a lite - no, definitely not.

If it were just the camera and MP3 player, I would agree with you
But because of the addition of an online shope
With internal memory and downloadable content
I believe it will sell
And I will definitely be getting one
Besides... I still have my phat.

Actually the price given by nintendo approximately equals $180 where as the ds currently is about $130. So there is a $50 difference.

The same can be pretty much said for the DSi. 1) The DSi is less functional for the Gamer, due to the lack of a GBA Slot, thus, it can't play GBA, GBC or GB games. And 2) When the DSi is going to be launched, it's going to go head to head with the DSL, which is cheaper, has a longer battery life, and also includes a GBA Slot so that you can trade Pokemon via Diamond and Pearl, or play Guitar Hero, or the new Tony Hawk game..

For people with a Phat, the insentive to purchase a DSi is very high. For people that have a DSL and a decent mobile, the insentive is almost at zero..

Plus, I cannot beleive how much Nintendo is attempting to milk us through having to purchase Games through a DS Shop. If we've already purchased titles on the Wii Shop Channel, why on earth can't we transfer them though to the DSi? (if this is possible, it'd be greatly appreciated if someone could confirm this with a Link to the source of information.)

Just look at the so called 'casual' consumers that are buying these ds's like hotcakes. I think Nintendo's pretty much proved that they can sell and market these babies pretty well. And just look at the gameboy; It took several different enhancements of each gameboy model to finally come to a new generation model (from gameboy to gameboy advance sp to ds) and that was over quite a long time span. These things will and are going to sell.

Actually, I'm pretty mad about the iPod thing. My mini finally kicked the bucket and I got a new one recently. Now they have a new nano which I'd probably prefer over the one I have.

on the bright side, people get to choose between a more casual and versatile DSi which has an mp3 player, 2 cameras, and a built in browser, in contrast to the ds lite (which I own and love and has a new disney's stitch protector my girlfriend gave to me and yes it's cute so what a man needs some cute stuff once in a while) and the ds lite for straight edge hardcore gaming which has a gba slot for gba games and is used for peripherals such as guitar hero on tour, arkanoid, and tony hawk motion.

"DS-I will bomb just like the gba micro."

The DSi offers something new to previous DS owners. Downloadable content, cameras, bigger screens, better speakers, audio playback, but only compatible with DS

The Micro added a smaller screen, but only is compatible with GBA.

I LOVED the micro. Very, very much. But ithink that the ds-i will be a sales flop because a large part of its sales come from kids and moms buying it for its simplicity, and those don't like knickel and dime things like SD.(this is just for America). And i know, the DS has a more mature fanbase, and i'm part of it. I'm just saying, they get alot of their sales from kids.

That must be a good friend who buys something just cause you said to...

I just see a lot of potential in the DSi.All the new stuff and added ram (rom?) will raise possibilities for publishers to make games even better.

I just hope DSi launchs at the first six months of 2009, my girlfriend wanted a ds and i said i would buy one to her if she pass in the colegue tests by the end of the year, and my ds lite is sustaining some damage as well (all my family uses it) like several scratches (thankfully the scratches are nearly invisible when you're not under direct light) on the touch screen, nothing serious, but maybe i might end buying one DSi for me too.

I really don't think it will fail, but Nintendo is starting to make some bad decisions. It's region locked, so don't try importing. :( And this doesn't really affect me, but Nintendo Points are either Wii Points or DSi Points, not both.

I own a DSL and I'm getting a DSi. Know why? To date, I've owned every Nintendo handheld except the DSPhat and GBMicro. But that's not why I'm getting a DSi. I'm getting it because I like all the new features (it's like a mini-Wii and a cell phone without the phone) and because [now] I only have 2 GBA games (and Pokemon Silver) that I don't play, and even if I wanted to, I could just pull out my SP or DSL and play it. It's no biggie.

DSiWare, DS Miis (in Fall Conference video), MP3 player and SD storage. Hellz yeah.

Why? It replaces the current Lite, costs the same and plays the same software. No Lite owner needs to buy it and for everybody else who doesn't have a DS already it's a nice update.agehaelhaym
No, it costs slightly more then the DS Lite but is miles better in every regard. Larger screens, internal and SD card storage, two cameras etc, I think it is a steal compared to the PSP really. 180 for something that will play downloadable games, music, take pictures and have internet capabilities and stuff makes it far more worthwhile. I think it can also open up an independent homebrew development era for the DS in terms of downloadable games, if Nintendo is willing to sell the tools needed to make DS games which they could then sell as DSWare much like WiiWare.

I believe that most ppl who want a DS would already have one. But ppl will fall for it just like ppl bought DSLites when they still had original DSs. And the DSLite to DSi upgrade is a bigger update than DS to DSLite. DS to DSLite was more of an aesthetic update. And what's the i for, why does everything new in technology need an i in it?
