this is the longest a handheld has gone before being replaced

well since the GB of course

the GBC lasted only 3 years, the GBA lasted 3 years

now the DS has lasted nearly 5 years

Pretty good life so far if you ask me? Thoughts? HOw much longer you think it will be?

To be fair, Nintendo replaced the GBC with GBA while the GBC was selling very well

and replaced, or put out the "third pillar" DS while GBA was selling well

both times ignoring big user bases

It should last longer, they are still selling well. Also, what other handheld could Nintendo possibly come up with? I can't think of much more, it already has a touch screen...

I just don't see what else they could add...

I think they should bring back the gameboy line. I'm not a huge fan of the touchscreen.

Hopefully the new one will add support for a unified account system like psn, so that I can download virtual console games on both nintendo's next console and handheld, and of course: better graphics. Also, backwards compatibility! Since DS game cartridges are similar to memory cards, they can continue using those flash cards!

The GBA was viable until 2007. It was never intended to be replaced by the DS until the micro flopped.

My original gameboy is still going strong after about 7 and ahalf years. I still play it rarely just to listen to 8 bit music or relive some moments on Link's Awakening.

Don't forget Nintendo also replaced the DS with the DSi (even though it's not a new console). It's just like the GBC and GBP/GB. The GBC was just an upgrade to the GBP and GB

That's what people always say. Back in the day of the GBC they would say "It's already color, I don't see what else they can add". There is always something to add. Even if they don't "add" something (like a new screen or camera) they can aways amp up the power. Fact is that someday down the line handhelds will be able to do what the 360 and PS3 do today. But yes, the DS is still selling very well I will keep doing so as long as there is a good line up of games (like there is this year).

True but the GBC also had it's own GBC exlusive games that the two handhelds before it could not play (Mission Impossible, Zelda: orical of seasons, Megaman X Extream ext.), as will the DSi. They have already said that there will be DSi games and DSi hybrid games in the line sometime.

And i ask you this? Why isn't the DSi a new console?

It has new games that need to use its new hardware to play games using a new user control input method

It will have new games sold at retail using the new hardware and the new user control input method

It has new multimedia features, new stuff all around

So why believe Nintendo when they say the DSi is a "third pillar" and won't replace the DS Lite when they said the same thing about the DS/GBA?

Was the GBC not a new console even though it had some really good games for itself?

Where do you draw the line on what a new console is? Does it need a number in the title? (which Ninty never does)

darth-pyschosis

Did Nintendo discontinued production of the DS Lite and as a result it is now in short supply? That would be a sign that the DSi is to replace the DS Lite.

DS Lite units are still being sold in stores.

Actually they have discontinued the Polar White and Onyx DS Lites in NA and have been shipping very little DS Lites for a long time already in Japan

DSi sales are 10 to 1 most weeks to DS lites sales in Japan

Honestly they should just axe the DS Lite in japan anyway, it sells 5-8k a week and most of those people would buy the DSi anyway with its 60k per week sales

depends on how you look at the DSI. It was a much bigger change than the GBC was to the original GB.

let me exemplify this: The classic GB could play every single game that the Game Boy Color could. The GBA could play the exact same games the GBA micro and lite could. Also most GB games. The GBA could NOT play all the games of the DS(only the GBA).(GB support dropped) The DS Lite can play the exact same games the DS can. The DS lite and the DS can NOT play all the games the DSI can(GBA support dropped). See the pattern?

It's going to be fun seeing which handheld will last the longest. The NDS or the PSP.

I think the DS will go another 2 years before being replaced with another system. Especially because the DSi was just released.

Why?

I own both systems so it's not like I'm lining them both up to fight or something. As I own both systems I have no need to bash or hate any of them. It will however IMO be interesting to see which handheld developer will screw it's fanbase first. Will it be Sony with the PSP GO! or will it be Nintendo with the DSI?

My comment wasn't something negative about the DS. It was just a personal thought that I wrote in a post. I am allowed to mention the PSP in this board just as long as it's not SW material aren't I?

Actually, Nintendo is still releasing new colors of the DS Lite and it is still completely in production :) So you are most definitely right that it is not being replaced.

I wasn't suggesting that your post was bashing/hating either system. I'm just thinking that it could lead to other people making comments that do. Not trying to offend you in any way...I'm just saying where this could end up.

the last one they released was the lime green one in April, and they have discontinued White and Black Lites in NA. Its believed they discontinued Onyx Lite so people wouldn't confuse it with Black DSi

Can we stop mentioning the PSP on the this forum and focus solely on the DS and its family on this thread? This is not System Wars, and any comparison of it (positive or negative) to the DS is against the rules. There is risk of people being moderated and this thread locked.

Anyway, as long as the DS Lite is in production and it is selling (even in levels much below it successor the DSi), it has not been replaced. Also, Nintendo has not officially announced that it is discontinuing the DS Lite.
