It will actually look better then on the 3DS. The reason being?

The current 3DS has two ways of playing DS games, native resolution and enlarged. The native resolution keeps the same resolution as they do on the DS, meaning DS games actually appear pretty small. The enlarged way is worse quality than if you were playing on a DS but of a very similar size screen, the reason for the quality drop is because the 3DS has a better resolution meaning to keep the same size it must spread it's pixels across a bigger resolution.

The reason DS games will look better on the 3DS XL is simple. The XL has the same resolution as the 3DS, meaning that playing DS games in their native resolution will appear about the same size as if you were playing them on DS because the XL has a same resolution but a bigger screen. If you were to play the DS games in the enlarged way (what I've called it) then there is possibility that they could look worse because as on the 3DS they are stretching out across a higher resolution AND on a bigger screen.

In conclusion: if you play DS games in their native resolution they will appear the same screen size as on the DS and exactly the same quality as if you were playing on DS.

I hope this makes sense to everyone.

And in order to KEEP that resolution, DS games will have a black bar all the way around the picture, as they do when you play games in native resolution on a DSiXL... So what's the point of the bigger screen, then? This is nothing different than letterboxed movies...

Your point is rather moot.

That's what you THINK will happen, it hasn't been confirmed.

Actually it was confirmed. I haven't got the source as I can't remember where I read it. It said that DS games would have a "True 1:1 ratio"

Yes, there will be block boxes still but the point is the quality will be the same as on the DS rather than the slighty worse quality we have now on the 3DS. The bigger screens are purely for the 3DS games so I don't really get what your question is to that. I fail to see how my point is moot?

I also read that in another thread, but we shouldn't believe everything we read online.

Now IGN have come out with the same thing.

"The new system's 1:1 pixel mode should make original DS cartridges, DSiWare games and 3DS Virtual Console titles more crisp and clear when compared to the "blurry" effect the first 3DS applies to those game's visuals."

This was deduced by everyone from the beginning for being so obvious. Thanks for the thread anyways.

Then why in the heck get a 3DS XL if you're going to just get a black bar all around the screen? Same goes for playing games in native-resolution on the original 3DS.

as it is i barely ever play ds game on 3ds because of that border,in this case the border is EVEN bigger a small black border is bad enough but because it's bigger now it's worse.

maybe we could have 3 modes 1.full screen 2.expanded screen(default) 3.1to1 mode but that will never happen as long as people act indifferent to the idea of full screen

Couldn't agree MORE.

Why buy a system with a bigger screen when you're still looking at the same sized image?

:?

It is the same sized image as a DS. It is considerably larger than the game running in native resolution on a normal 3DS system though. I don't see how being able to play DS games in native resolution at approximately the original size is a dissadvantage here. You can have 3DS games in larger than the original size in native resolution and DS games in the original size in native resolution. It workse pretty good if you are concerned w/ playing DS games in native resolution and only want to carry around one device.

It has been confirmed though, that Nintendo is using some kind of super advanced screen technology.

When I first got my 3DS I tried tolerating playing DS games on it for a while and ended up just leaving the DS play on the DS.. I'm especially fond of the DSi XL and use it most all of the time with DS games now. Even though its slightly stretched it is nowhere near the downgrade in quality seen on DS games played on the 3DS. I'll just have to see DS games in action on the 3DS XL in person before I make a call on it. In the meantime I'm not bothered to use my DSiXL for DS games, and I doubt I'd be bothered later either.
