When people say it's not a fighting game, what they mean is it's not a slow, boring, traditional fighter.

Zero to with fighting? Why are you people in such stages of denial? You punch each other, kick each other, bash each other, fight each other...

What else would you like to call it? It even says it's a fighting game on the freakin' box and you're still saying it's not? Unbelievable. People seem to think it's not a fighting game just because Sakurai said so. It was probably more of his mind-games. Remember "One smash ball per match"?

Technically, yes it's a fighting game, but it's not. Normally when you talk about fighting games, it's like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, SNK games, Dead or Alve, Arcana Heart, etc.

It's......just not the same......it's like the difference between driving a golf cart, and drving a car -.-.

So if they made a game where you have to race around with golf carts it wouldn't be a driving game? Of course it would. I suppose Soul Calibur isn't "technically" a fighting game because you use weapons? kekekekeke.

Its a fighting game nonetheless. Just because it is not your traditional side scrolling fighter where its 1 vs 1 on flat ground does not mean it is not a fighting game. The definition of fighting game is a game were you fight against eachother with fists, swords, etc, etc. How can you not classify this as a fighting game?

At it's core, it's a driving game, like how Brawl is a fighting game at it's core...it is just not like a traditional arcade fighting game, so I still don't consider a "golf cart" game to be a driving game. And Soul Calibur IS a fighting game, wth are you talking about?

Smash bros. is NOTHING like Marvel Ultimate Alliance. That's an Action RPG. You fight people, but you level up, have teammates, etc.

It is a fighting game just because the way it plays to other certain fighting games like Street Fighter. In that game you have an energy bar but in Smash Bros you have a % and if you get them normally over 100% you get a good chance of knocking your opponent out so in my opinion its a fighting game but a different sort of fighting game.

Super Smash Bros. started a sub-genre of fighting called Arena Fighters or Brawlers (Power Stone, Red Hot Rumble, etc). It's not too far removed from how DDR and Guitar Hero popularized the Rhythm genre, which is a sub-genre of Puzzle games.

If someone walked up to you and said that Rock Band isn't a puzzle game, you wouldn't have a problem, even though Rhythm games are puzzle games. So why the problem when someone says Smash isn't a fighting game?

a little bit off topic, but although i see ur connection between puzzles and rythim games, i dont think rythim is a sub genre just because it involves things falling down/up the screen. its alot more about timing than putting things on the right place to score more. rythim games are a separated genre, IMO

The only reason Rhythm games have been listed in the Puzzle genre was because there wasn't any genre discriminate enough to put the games in, so the first few games (Rez, Amplitude, DDR, Gitaroo Man, Guitar Hero) had to pretty much make it a genre without being placed in "Miscellaneous" or "Puzzle"

This is a fighter. I'm assuming people say it isn't because they are so used to traditional fighters like Soul Caliber, King of Fighters, and Street Fighter. But this is a unique fighter. Most fighting games require you to take out your health but in Brawl, you smash your opponents off the screen instead of knocking them out. Lay off Brawl, Nintendo just wants to give their fans a nice unique fighter.

Its sad how anyone can come up here and say dumb things as to" Smash bros isn't a fighting game". Wow this new gen of gamers are really showing their inexperience alright.
