I'm really tired of all these games with cartoon graphics for the Wii. I mean, it's fine to have some cartoon graphics for games but they have too many!! It's time for more realistic graphics games!! (Like Call of Duty: World at War, StarWars: The Force Unleashed and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess)derk4what's wrong with cartoon-rendering?
I dissagree. I prefer more stylized graphics- the more realistic graphics get the more it scares me. I mean not genuine fear, but you know. It bothers me how realistic and brutal the killing is in games like CoD:WaW. I don't like being entertained by that- I feel like a scum bag. I just hope we don't get to a point where gamers begin to blur the line between reality and videogames. That's just me, though :)

Why's that? Why do we need more realistic games? And what makes cartoony games worse?

Shaun White could have been so much better if it weren't a cartoon. I think the problem is the Japaneese developers tend to favor cartoons and it's the Japaneese developers who are making the most popular games for the Wii. This should change when western developers get their act together -- as long as they don't try to copy the Japaneese....
There are two other systems that cater to those needs.
The Wii has a more cartoony feel to it because developers need to work around the fact that "realistic" graphics on the Wii don't look nearly as good as on the "other" systems. If you don't like it, you bought the wrong console.

There are no other systems that look good in your living room or have motion controls. Cartoons are cool for the kids (or when you're feeling like a kid) but sometimes you want someting a little more mature (and no, not the ESRB rating where M often stands for immature).Cartoony visuals are the "best" when it comes to realism. Are you gonna tell me that Goombas and blobs of goo do not look "real" enough?
You should also remember that you are playing video games - 100% fantasy. There are NO games out there that look realistic.

Look at a game like Okami, it looks amazing and was actually first made on the PS2. The Cartoony style can overcome the lack of amazing graphics on the Wii and make amazing looking games. No that I want all my games with that style, it just works.

What does that have to do with anything? I know what realistic graphics look like. Doesn't mean you're mature by playing them, or that the games are mature, or anything, for that matter. All it tells you is that the game looks more realistic. And cartoony graphics does not equal childish. Does anybody say Family Guy is for kids? What about pornographic anime? Cartoony is just an artistic direction. Look at games like No More Heroes or MadWorld, are those childish games? No, they have mature subject matter in them, and are rated M.

There are plenty of games with cartoon graphics out right now, and plenty of realistic games out. It just depends on the genre, and what type of art style best fits the needs of the game.
There are two other systems that cater to those needs.

I can't stand on rails shooters either.I actually prefer seeing a good selection of both, when applicable
Say, for instance, a driving simulator. While Mario Kart Wii is a total kick in the pants, Gran Turismo is intense. Both fill the need for different things.
I'm around art constantly. I do it for a living and I can honestly say that the finish of an idea is not nearly as important as the idea itself. I have seen extremely detailed work that bit the dust conceptually and I have seen paintings that took two hours to make or less that are and always will be my favorite, because the concept behind the idea kills it.
Look at Rayman, for instance. Not a lot of story, or even a lot of character detail, but conceptually brilliant and funny. It works on many levels. Metal Gear, while not totally realistic, was one of the more ground breaking games that hit the shelves and again, very well executed particularly because of it's core gaming concepts.
I'm down as long as the developers put some effort forth. If it's fun, that's all that matters.
And yes, I do think that the Wii console lends itself a bit more to asthetics. Which you wouldn't think matters, but if you're like me and you only have something out that is in use or out for asthetic perposes only, it's nice not to have to worry or think about cords and systems that take up a lot of space. This is one of the biggest reasons why I hate Guitar Hero and Rock Band. And on a side note, I primarily dislike it because it glorifies rock stardom, doesn't teach you how to actually play an instrument or even write music at all. I also dislike how those who truly know how to play instruments have the most difficult time adapting to it's bogus gameplay/control adaptation.
I'm all for cartoons, as long as they are well thought out, but I understand your frustration, as it seems like an excuse to push lazy/ worthless games out the door of the developers warehouse (which hurts the toon genre's reputation).
That line is about about a mile wide, and can't be blurred with any foreseeable technology. The only line that can be blurred is an ethical one, and that is purely a personal judgement and can't be blamed on technology. The technology is neutral.I dissagree. Great reply, though I do think that games like guitar hero are bringing interest back to rock music. Yes, it may be bogus, but anything that can get people interested in music again can't be a bad thing.Cartoony styles is where the Wii could excel at. We could have been saved a very drab looking game in Spider-Man Web of Shadows if they went with a distinctive look like Ultimate Spider-Man on the Gamecube had, Dead Rising may too have benefitted from a anime theme cel shaded look purely to reflect the humour. I dare EA to try and make Dead Space look like a playable version of the anime movie Dead Space Downfall and reckon Rockstar could make a Grand Theft Auto with visuals like it's cover art. It sure wouldn't hurt to try.
why call it cartoon? call it animated or artistic graphics, because cartoon makes it sound like you are biased toward the whole thing (with the kiddie thing going again and what not, not saying you are, but it sounds like it).
I personally like seeing a lot of animated/artistic graphics, its a new way to game. and it by passes limits of the wii. if you want to see some realistic graphics, well just wait, we just happen to have artistic graphic game right now, just wait a bit and im sure we will get some more realistic graphic games. for now there is nothing to do but wait. If you want something like a Xbox360 graphics, well your just asking the wrong console to do so, the wii is more about motion sensors and more innovation in a game, then just pushing the realistic look.

This is a good way to put it. The cell-shading effect is far more attractive to me than most realistic-looking games. But, it's purely subjective.

Then go buy a console where the games have almost photorealistic graphics.
Personally, I feel that "cartoony" game have a better developed art style, and that adds to the quality of the game. A game such as SMG or De Blob, for instance.
Even games on other consoles benefit for great art direction, i.e. the most recent Prince of Persia.

There no point in trying to convince somebody who is to stubborn or stupid to listen to others opions respectful. P.S don't judge a game by quick searching play it first then if u still don't then that is fine by me. But don't be a dunce a say I game dumb if u never heard nor played it.

i dislike real looking graphics, i love cartoon/cel shading graphics i would like every game just be like that elbert_b_23
agreed. Realistic graphics on wii tend to look bad.
First of all, Star Wars and Twilight Princess.... realistic? We must be thinking about completely different games, so I'll say no more. :P Anyways, I do see your point here, and quite frankly, I think it's pretty bad... The problem we're having with video games these days is that 90% of games try to be too realistic. Seriously, which is the point of trying to imitate life so much that there is no difference between the two? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a video game, not to mention say that game developers have no sense of creativity? Growing up, the idea of having better graphics appealed to me because of the thought of seeing games like Mario, Sonic, and Zelda and their fantasy worlds coming to greater life. I couldn't have cared less about whether or not I could see sweat falling from a basketball players face or the detail of a rifle. If I want to see that so badly, I'll go see it in person, as it will be a greater experience than any video game can provide from that perspective. I think more attention needs to be put towards making imaginative worlds and characters feel like they were taken directly from the designer's mind, so that we can really experience the joys of being in those worlds with those characters. Perhaps the greatest thing I've seen thus far this gen and probably will see is when I looked at many of Super Mario Galaxy's superbly designed levels and felt like I was part of a world unlike this one. Can't get that if a game is too 'realistic', you know? :)Madmangamer364
One of the best post i've read and I completely agree. Plus, I could care less about how the game looks if it's fun and has a good story. Gameplay owns all.
