i have been a gamer all my life and still love it. i'm now married and have 4 kids but still enjoy gaming when i have the time. they way my schedule is now with work and family it seems a lot easier to game on a handheld then a console. do you consider the DS a kids console only or do you think its fine for adults to enjoy.

i was just curious what everyone's thoughts were.

Depends on the person, some people may think of gaming as a whole as childish.

THE DS HAS PLENTY OF GAMES FOR ADULTS. Studies show that Nintendo's systems have the oldest players compared to other systems. so yeah stick with the 3DS and all should be well

Wrong question.

Right question: Do you enjoy playing it?

That's all that matters. Who cares what anybody else thinks.

With games like Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid coming out I don't consider it a "kids" console. I wouldn't consider the DS this generation a kids console for that matter either. Age is just a number anyways, games are rated E for Everyone for a reason.

As most ads on television are marketed towards aduts (brain training and that tripe) I'm sure the DS is well suitable as a FAMILY unit, rather than merely for kids. There's something for everyone, even if I'm a grown man that enjoys kiddie games on it.

It seems like the young are the ones who have time to worry or not if they're too old for something.

Games are games, they are meant to be played and enjoyed by anyone and everyone who wants to play them. Whether your vice be Mario, Pokemon, Nintendogs, as long as you enjoy it, that is the only thing that matters.

Yes you are WAY TOO OLD....so put the game device down...become sensible, work hard..............if you have to ask, YES, you ARE too old.

What a pity.

By the way, I'm 62 and am currently enjoying my XL (and Dragon Quest IX). I also work hard. And I have learned that YOU NEED TO TAKE A BREAK once in a while. Find something you enjoy and do it. Doesn't matter what it is. Jump rope, hopscotch, work out, read, play games...........whatever! Just DO IT. You'll live longer (and also enjoy it more!).... :D

For me, it's about the GAMES, not the console. I find that the games I prefer are the DS kind. So that's the console I use. If your favs on the the PSP or the WII, go for it.

But it's not about age, because age is only a state of mind - and as Mark Twain once said: Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

Society as a whole considers games, childish. Ironically most adults I converse with have DSes and games that cater to them.

A couple of years ago I worked in a big office. One day 5-6 of us all brought in DSs and spent the day sending each other funny messages about the boss on Pictochat when he wasn't looking!

Too old  thats a good one, my dad turns 62 this year and he plays the DS whenever he gets some free time and I wouldn't call him too old. The only way someone is too old for games is when they can't physically pick up a controller or handheld :P Hell if I couldn't pick one up Id still find a way to play them :P

Just because the DS appeals to a very wide audience, it doesn't mean that it's for kids.

You just need to take a look at videos from Japan. Go to youtube.com and search for a Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter launch, you will see a lot Men and Women from all ages playing with the DS.s and PSP's. The rest of the world should change the way of thinking of videogames like Japan.

For me, I love the DS. I didn't think I would. I used to think of handheld gaming as silly or something. That's odd because I typically don't generalize something like that if I haven't tried it. I mean, I even went to see Brokeback Mountain *before* I'd make fun of it out of principal. I guess it was because the last handheld experiance I had was with last gen cell phones, and the gameboy before that. All of which I didn't get the point to.

I thought the only "real" gaming was on PS2 and 3, Xbox and 360 and the PC. You couldn't play a seriousgame on a handheld.

But then, in August 2010, I was in Hawaii and I thought, "you know, I think I'd like to try the DS out". Mainly because I was sitting on a beach playing Alchemy on my Android phone. I hit gamespot and read some reviews for Dragon Quest IX and thought, man, I really DO want to play that game!

So when we got back, I got a DSi (the DSi XL seemed too big honestly). I picked up "New Super Mario Bros" and "Dragon Quest IX".

Today, I'm happy to say that my DSi is pretty much my game system of choice. I took it to PAX even. Heck I haven't turned my PS3 on in ages. I have a 2 month old daughter, and it's great when she's sleeping to pick up a game (I'm on Golden Sun Dark Dawn right now) play a little and if she needs something, I simply close the lid and put the thing to sleep and come back to it when I can.

And honestly, I haven't had this much fun with the games in a long time. I love the games I've been playing on this. I really like RPGs and the last one I played on my PS3 was Final Fantasy 13. I really got disenchanted with that game. I really felt Square was laughing at me all the way to the bank.

I don't feel that way with the games I play on the DS. I really just enjoy playing them. That's a big deal.

So yeah, I think the DS is for anyone who wants to play a good game. Honestly.

And I've got my 3DS on pre-order. First time I've EVER pre-ordered a console of any type.

Happy Gaming Everyone,

Mark

I don't guess you'll ever be too old, but it's not good to spend too much time on the DS if you're going through a lot of personal problems. Best to solve those first rather than hide in a corner and avoid your problems. Not saying you have any, but that's the only thing I can think of that would make it bad. If you use gaming as a subitute for dealing with any problems you might have.

But if your life's going well, and it sounds like it is, you should be fine. Enjoy your DS, and I hope you enjoy the 3DS. Just remember Nintendo's spreading out the real good ones over the first six months or so.

Enjoy.

My DSi has an aluminum case and people have no clue what it is. I tell them it is a portable netbook. btw I use the camera and music player as well as playing solitaire, scrabble, Brain Age art fs and letters and more. I have used the browser when I get a free wifi connection.

So I guess the DSi is like a portable netbook.

Well, I'll be turning 23 this year and I feel perfectly fine playing a DS. It has a good library of games, and handheld gaming can be more convenient and fun than console gaming at times. So, no reason to feel ashamed about it. Anyone can play games, whether they are 1 or 100. Just find games that you enjoy, that's all that matters.

i also do and im past 27 now and with marriage plans. We both play games, and honestly, society is still slowly growing out of the gaming=childish mantra.Im not the otldest gamer or anything but im an adult .The DS was a great system for anyone ,because it had great ,compellling games. Now the 3ds is coming. Basically all gaming is the same, but some are still afraid to be considered childish(and THATS the mistake), so they label their own system as something for adults to make themselves feel safe from "shame".Thats just the wrong answer! The right one is to shed silly fears entirely, and grow up entirely, doing what you like.

Honestly, I hear my sister say, who is not a gamer and would not understand, "Why do you want a '3DS' DS is for kids." I have to disagree with that. It's that a lot of children own DSs, if every kid bought an Xbox 360 people would start saying "Xbox is for kids." Why all the kids own one is that the kids like playing video games, and the DS lite is $120. That is very cheap compared to other systems. The PSP was more than $200 when it first came out, and had it's reasons. But parents don't look at graphics and hardware power, they look at the price. And maybe, the ESRB rating. And since Nintendo has lots of family friendly games, like Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, etc. Which are all great games, and happen to be family friendly.

And as long as you set your priorities, making the important things first, family, friends, work, church, etc., it's perfectly OK.

I am 30 myself and dont care what anyone thinks. Most people who would criticize someone for playing games most likely A.) has never given a video game any amount of effort.. B.) preconceived notions that games are for children. C.) Tried to play a video game once and really sucked at it.. so.. they think video games are no fun and because they think there no fun.. they assume that only a child could have fun with a video game.

I will say this though there many types of gamers.. I walked into gamestop today to pre order a 3DS.. wasnt my initial intention but after looking at the box I said what the hell.. But then this group of young adults around 25 walked into the store all dressed in black and nerded out. One kid shouted "Oh snap I left my Pokemon game at home" and then started talking about the nerdiest stuff I have ever heard in my life.. bragging about there video game T-Shirts and Jackets.. I love video games but .. then there was a young women who seemed to be more in line with myself as far as gaming habbits. There were 3 or 4 40-50 year olds quietly browsing the games. And then there was the little guys.. 7-9 year olds begging there mom for a COD game. It dawned on me that the gaming sub culture is very diverse. I think a lot of people look at the 18-25 year old males that look and act like.. you know.. nerds.. that people often associate with gamers.

When I was younger I would try and label gaming as I played. I would label some games "hardcore" some "childish" etc etc. But now i've learned that Gaming overall is a very diverse hobby and there are many ways to enjoy it :) tl;dnr: Play whatever games you want, buy the systems you want, don't worry about labels man :)

the thing is you dont start off awesome at video games. its like any other hobby you must progress and get better at it. so i always find that arguement annoying oh i tried it once i suck ill never play it again. did you suck at math the first time? probably did you quit? i hope not same point really.

The average gamer is 35 years old, with 40% being female. As long as you enjoy your hobby or what you do, who cares what others think? those who don't do something they enjoy because people may judge them are the ones who are childish, just like those who judge. C.S Lewis Quote on this matter: Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
