"As a showcase for the Wii's technical abilities, the game is an embarrassment, graphically equivalent to those relics of 3D gaming's earliest days. And while the paucity of game modes would be forgiveable if those on offer sizzled with brilliance, in this context they bespeak a game rushed to completion and released with the very minimum of functional requirements. As a result, the only redeeming quality is the echo of ambition that can be faintly heard in the ruins of execution."

So this, The Conduit, Conduit 2 and The Grinder are all suppose to be graphical 'showcases' for the Wii from HVS. Well two failed so far. Third times a charm maybe?

I don't know, people admired it at first. Less after it's change, but still, wasn't expecting it to be that poorly reviewed.

Yeah...it was doomed from the start. And I totally forgot it was High Voltage making it. They knew it was bad because the initial price in the U.S. would be at $30 instead of a usual retail $50. I'm not sure if Tournament of Legends is to be classified as shovelware. I'll have to think more into it.

a fighting game where you waggle to attack and you can't combo. looks horrid, controls don't respond well, gameplay's awful. there you go, should help you with your thinking.

Shovelware is usually stuff like Ninjabread Man, games made really quickly without any effort. I think this is just poorly made because the team did a bad job -- They probably spent more time on it then anyone who made Ninjabread Man.

Yeah see the thing is both statements here are true, and that's what brings to the question. High Voltage does not have the talent to make a good game. They knew it was a bad game that why it's almost half the price for its retail launch. With nearly all, if not all, qualities of Tournament of Legends hugely subpar to the capabilities of the Wii....is it the end result of developers not being able to create a good game also falling into the same category of those who intentionally who put a lack of effort and polish into their titles, if both products are just as good as one another? Is it shovelware for both ways?

When they first showed this game, it actually looked really good as a technical thing if I remember correctly. Now it looks like crap. How do they downgrade in a year of development?

The Grinder looked actually pretty good. Hopefully HVS doesn't ruin it. Judging from history however...

Why are people saying the graphics look bad? They look pretty good to me, though they took a bit of a nosedive from when the game was Gladiator AD. Of course, a **** game in the fun department makes the graphics pretty much worthless.

As soon as it went from Bloody Gladiator to Chartoony Tournament of Legends I knew this was going to be a failure.

This is hurting Conduit 2.

yeah its a shame that hvs downgraded the game hoping it would sell better for familys, and what i thought hurting the conduit 2 was being a hvs title

Hard to make money with games that don't have appeal to anyone. In short, no one's going to buy this game, especially when it now seems to be on its way to getting critically hammered in the coming weeks. I doubt its new 'lighter' approach is going to appeal towards many families, since it's still a gladiator-type fighting game with a less than sparkling are design. The transition was probably just to lighten the load and expectations of the game, since it was never destined to be a mega-seller to begin with, even as "Gladiator A.D."

I hate to be the voice of reason but.... Basically you sound like you are clinging to the worst review and using it as the norm .http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/wii/tournamentoflegends?q=tournament%20of%20legends and thats a bit pathetic if you ask me.You hated the game or the dev, which is average and nowhere else besides eurogamer it was critiziced for having low tech visuals.Haters cling to this review to justify their hate for a game they havent played or seen on their tvs(as i havent neither). I dont care much about the game at all.i just think you gotta be fair and make sense. Look a the replies."saw it coming".Eurogamer i trust you! Before Eurogamers review the average was above 60, which is pretty average, so what if the following reviews follow the current majority trend? But no, people would rather cling to the worst review instead of looking for the consensus .haters are gonna hate...but is still sad.I hope eurogamer isnt your measure of qualitfying a game from now on. i just care about being impartial and making sense.

I find it ridiculous that you people are bashing a game you have never played. I for one have the game and have thoroughly enjoyed. It's not perfect but is fun as hell. Play a game before you knock it. I wouldn't have found a lot of my favorite games if I never played games that got reviewed badly.

I've never understood this line, even though it seems to be quite popular - if everyone had to get a game and play it before deciding that they don't want it, then everyone would basically have to play every game ever made. The entire point of things like reviews, previews, gameplay videos, and the like, is to make it so that you can make that decision for free.

You and a few other online forum members =/= a successful game, even if the game's a 'budget title' now. I still don't see this game selling to anyone outside of the HVS fanatics that go crazy about everything it does and STILL believe that it's this amazing developer, even in the face of one disappointment after another.

Weird. Their games would fade into obscurity on any other console, I guess the lack of FPS and fighters on Wii does them a favour?

Hopefully people can finally stop hyping HVS games, ever since they first showed Conduit and it looked halfway ok sort of pretty, they've been getting heaps of undeserved attention. HVS has never made a game above average, and likely never will.

Tons of games on the Wii would fade in to obscurity on any other console. Just look at Red Steel 2, No More Heroes, and Little King's Story.
