Does this mean the Wii will never see a "complex" resident evil title such as a 3rd person RE4 quality action/adventure game again?

Don't get me wrong, Umbrella Chronicles seems like a fun-looking/interesting game--although it would look a lot better if they actually showed the weapons in the first-person view.

Personally, I would have loved to see the original 4 resident evils revamped and redone with RE4 controls and graphics.

What do y'all think of this....

I think the assumption that Wii users don't want a complex game is the dis not the hardware, cause that thinking just sucks to hear from a developer :(

They already have RE4 coming out for Wii. Just like all the other ones. It was on the front page for the Wii section here on gamespot.

I think this says more about RE4:Wii than anything else.  Clearly the controls won't/don't work perfectly for RE4.  Otherwise they would use the same fomula for RE:UC

that whole article doesn't make any sense. it insinuates that Wii users are lazy bummbling retards, incapable of playing a game with any depth or challenge. that sucks to hear from a developer that they're deliberately holding back on a games potential because they think their consumers are incompetent.

this is all excuses, BS. they do it coz they are lazy and on-rail games are easy to develop.

gamers play games for the freedom to play around. if you want story telling style, they'd have choosen the movie to watch.

i don't understand the developer saying that RE4 style gameplay would have been too difficult to do with the Wii hardware. the control layout would be the same as on the gamecube, and you'd aim the weapon with the remote. walking and chewing gum at the same time is not beyond Wii owners, and any Wii owner that reads that article should be offended.

I agree with BunkaOne.

The main reason I was excited about the idea of the Wii (Revolution) when I first heard about it was visions of real, complex games with lightgun style shooting. I can't wait for RE4, as I've never played it before and it sounds like just what I envisioned. However, that article makes UC sound like crap. I may not get it at all, if just for my tiny vote against their ideas about what Wii owners want.

It also almost sounds like Capcom doesn't think the Wii is as capable as last generation systems! That's worrisome.

I agree and i think it's laziness on the developers part why make a new RE game that plays like RE4 when they can just release a port and slap on some wii controls. Some of these developers are really pissing me off,no wonder Nintendo games always do better on there own consoles that third party ones.It because these damn third party devs are to lazy and short sighted.

To achieve this goal, Kawata admits that Capcom "... had to compromise to a lower difficulty level."

Whoever said Wii games can't be challenging :x?  He's generalizing about the Wii audience and his statements show just how ignorant he is.  Resident Evil has a history of being fairly challenging and changing the difficulty isn't going to change that precedent.  The fact is that RE has already created an image of being for oldschool gamers who want a challenge and that's not going to change anytime soon.  Nintendo knows that many of their own titles such as Metroid and SSB benefit from a high difficulty because that's what the fans of the series like.  Too late now but those developers should have followed Nintendo's example.  :(

Maybe it'll still be fun to play though. Difficulty isn't everything so I'll still keep my eyes peeled. ;)

I'm more then a little ticked about it, I'm not buying a Wii. Befroe you know it they'll be making Zelda fisrt person. Simple isnt always better. I've been playing video games since the Intellavision, I've owned every nintendo system since the NES hit the market, but not this time. The Wii is for the casual gamer, I need something a little more hold my attention then a gimick controller that ruins a developers ability to create good games.

I'm getting very worried over the Wii. I bought one after a lot of deliberations and am still on the edge about whether or not it was a good choice. I was hyping it to death when I first heard of it at E3, but the hype went downhill. I did buy it, and love the idea of it, but developers are downplaying the capabilities. It's kinda sad, but oh well. I guess we always have first party titles... if they ever come out...

I expect to see an apology from him sometime soon, to all the wii owners

what a load of bs. here are my points, capcom bastard:

1) First of all as mentioned earlier by someone, the game is rated M therefore, NOT the "new gamer" audience.

2) Where the hell have you been?! Can't you see that millions if wii owners are COMPLAINING because of the lack of hardcore gaming?! you obviously don't know your audience

3) A resident revil 4 type game won't work on the Wii eh? You are effing releasing RE4 ON the Wii dumb-Aye

4) we all know whats going on. you pulled a move just like EA; you didn't expect the wii to be in such high demand so all of a sudden (after you realised you all made a mistake by not hopping on board the wii train) your mindset is "holy crap, we have to do something... uhhm.... lets port RE4 and also, lets make a brand NEW game! nooooo it doesnt have to be RE5, they won't care. in fact, put it on rails"

I must admit, I'm looking forward to this game, however the dumbass should've kept his mouth shut. He pulled a Phil Harrison. in a way i feel ignored by capcom, telling me that i want easy games. all hardcore gamers who are wii owners should be appaled by that as well!

I'm glad that I'm not a Resident Evil fan. I never understood what is great this game. All Capcom wants is to milk the franchise more and more. If it wasn't Treasure Island Z, I would still boycott their games.

I imagine that they will create a RE game in the RE4 style. RE4 will sell well and so will Umbrella Chronicles, and as they learn more about the Wii demographic they will make one.

3rd Party sometimes wonder or complain about their titles not doing well on Nintendo systems. Perhaps they should stop saying crap like this about the actual player base of said systems. I'm not a huge Resident Evil fan to be honest, until the GameCube versions the controls always sucked I felt still I was actually interested in RE:UC but not so much anymore. This needs to be cleared up or they just lost another sale for this game.

What could be hard for fitting the game on the Wii?  The only thing I can think of is the controller design.  He might be use to how the controls worked for all the earlier RE games where up onthe D-Pad moved forward and left and right only turned left and right. This kind of movement I consider old clumsy.  Heck those games where easy to play because shooting was nothing more than looking in the right direction and using the targeting button.

Sheesh, a rail shooter would be harder to play than how the first REs were just saying this.  In a rail shooter, you actually have to aim where as when I played the GC version of RE1, I held one button and pressed another.  After that, it was just walking around and finding stuff and relocating objects.

No the thing is they saw the success of things like Wii Sports and they think ease is the way to go so that they can sell to non gamers as well. however I dont see a 60 old grandmother who plays wii sports playing a RE game, no matter how easy it is.

He wasn't dissing the Wii's capabilities, it sounded more like he was underestimating the people who purchased one.
The person from Capcom being interviewed sounded like a completely out-of-touch jackass.  "Wii users like easiness."  What an idiot.  Really, how hard would a game like RE4 be to put on the Wii?  Obviously not very hard because they're doing that too.

This might be the most inept person to ever comment to the press on Capcom's behalf.  And possibly the stupidest decision they've ever made that I've been aware of.  Capcom just shot themselves in the foot.
It's like every developer in the world is out to make Nintendo a kiddie console.  Seriously this is like sabotage.  Square-Enix did it too with FFCC.  Why does Nintendo always get the shaft like this?

most people will still buy umbrella chronicals anyways, just like me...i just hope it atleast has some sort of difficulty setting. that way it pleases the bummbling retards they're apparently targeting, and also the gamers like those of us here on gamespot who want an enjoyable challenge.

What?! They better take that back or there will be hell to pay, gamers aren't dumb, we just won't buy capcom's games if they put little effort into them just to make a quick buck, just look at farcry wii, it went down to 20 bucks in just 3 months because of poor sales.

i think capcom just wants to see which control style we felt more comfortable with. they will probably survey people and ask consumers which control style they liked better. Then, if they make a new RE, they will use the control style we liked.

but this is just a guess

I like ur optimistic attitude--and want to agree with you LProject.   Hopefully, at some point soon, an ORIGINAL, 3RD person shooter will be released for the Wii.  This game would be ultra successful and if capcom wants to bank with Nintendo, they should keep the tried and true formula going.

Umbrella chronicles looks like an interesting concept and will sell decently. If they threw in gun animations from the first person view, it would look a lot more enticing.

Come on Capcom...

that whole article doesn't make any sense. it insinuates that Wii users are lazy bummbling retards, incapable of playing a game with any depth or challenge. that sucks to hear from a developer that they're deliberately holding back on a games potential because they think their consumers are incompetent. chefstubbies

Not all Wii owners are hardcore gamers like you or me. Casual gamers don't like pushing two different buttons to shoot. It's difficult for them to play games like RE4. The Wii was meant to bring in a new audience by making games that are accessible and fun. They're making RE UC simpler because it'll give those who've never played an RE game the chance to play it without becoming over-whelmed with confusing controls.

maybe but the hardcore gamer should not be ignored, not to mention the majority of RE audience will be the hardcore gamer. Most causual gamers that make up that new audience that Nintendo is bringing in are only interested in your Wii Sports and Mario Party like games not RE.

Just wait until RE4's port sells more than this game.  What an insult, seriously.  On the other hand, part of the blame might be thrown in Nintendo's court for marketing the system this way.  It's kind of a contradiction IMO to market it thus but to have this totally revolutionary control scheme.  It's a contradiction that Nintendo might be struggling with for a long time.  I wouldn't be surprised if this point in particular becomes a point of contention around the game journalism communities.

How is the article offensive? If you're insulted by what he said, I question your logic. The translation I got is that he doesn't have the effort or decency to create a game that contains the depth of RE4, and due to deadlines, couldn't give a **** about gamers or what the better option is.

Capcom just wants this game out ASAP. If that meant they'd have to include hamsters, rainbows and pink flowers to finish it on time, they'd do that and make up some lame excuse that wii owners enjoy hamsters, rainbows and flowers, so it's no biggie that their consideration for gameplay sucks.

RE UC is going to blow, it's already got incredibly mixed responces from the press, has an uninspiring design, has very little nunchuck movement (did they forget that the nunchuck had motion-sensing too?) and lacks some of the hardcore magic that todays games have. Such as difficulty and depth.

I think it's insulting, what they're doing. Making a poor game because you don't take a console seriously is both a slap in the face to those who bought the system and a major blunder on their own part. The bulk of their game sales will rely on word of mouth / text. And if the game is a flop, you know a good deal of the blame will trace back to this situation. If developers took the system more seriously, maybe consumers would be more serious about buying their games. I seriously wonder how many people will even look into the next FF:CC game. I probably won't, as I've found Fire Emblem to be infinately more enjoyable than any FF game (other than Tactics, III, and IV).

What do y'all think of this....

wiiman555

Funny thing is they were making it like RE4 but the developers changed their mind.

What's with the outrage? First of all, gaming companies don't owe the hardcore fan anything. They make a game to get our money. And if they don't think there's a money-making opportunity they're under no obligation to do anything. So let's get real, shall we?

Second, these comments are completely in keeping with Nintendo's new philosophy, a philosophy which some 'hardcore fans' still haven't gotten to grips with. Disagree with that philosophy all you want- knock yourself out. But if you don't like it, and Galaxy, Prime and Smash Brothers (coming this year according to reports) aren't enough to satisfy you, then you shouldn't have bought the system. And just because you disagree with that philosophy doesn't mean the 'Wii is in trouble'. Sales figures say different, as does the awesome lineup of games for the coming year.

I'm looking forward to Umbrella Chronicles as a game to blast through pretty quickly, and have a fun time with. I don't care that it's not Resident Evil 5, since I'll play that on the 360- the beauty of having more than one console. And I certainly don't feel betrayed, and ready to start petitioning and boycotting Capcom products. Because that's ridiculous.

I post at Capcom forums. The senior official at the forums is very polite, but he says that for Wii, like the GameCube, the sweet spot is 5-12 years old. That means you won't see many good games from them for the Wii. Remember also how they screwed Nintendo fans with RE4 going platform.

Capcom still has a negative look at Wii user base that they are less demanding and less sophistacted. If you wish to see good games coming from them for Wii, a boycott is needed. If they find the consumers are demanding more, they will give them more. If their games sell tons because of the RE name, they will just give us crap like this over and over. It's all about sales, let the consumers decide.

The only way Capcom, will take the Wii seriously is if UC and RE4 sale well.  It is true, alot of developers didn't anticipate how popular the Wii would be.  Heck...Nintendo didn't even know--which explains the shortages.  Could you really blame developers for being hesitant to develop for a Nintendo console?  Especially with the disappointment of the N64 during that era and the GC last generation.  I mean...if developers were aware that the specs on the Wii, were not going to be that powerful...they assumed....oh...just another Gamecube!  If I were a developer, I wouldn't of envisioned having my best team work on a Nintendo console.

Let's face it...from a technical standpoint...developers will still take the Wii lighty.  However, from a business standpoint, developers are now starting to take it seriously and it would be a losing situation not to develop for the Wii.  However, they should still push the system to it 's limits.  So what if it will never be on par with the 360 and PS3...that doesn't mean you produce a poorly developed and rushed game.  If Nintendo can pump out beautiful and thoughtful titles for the Wii....so can they.

Let's say that if the Wii's sucess continues and it outsells the 360 and PS3 at the end of this generation.  If developers continue this trend, it will look very odd, that their games contributed very little to the success of the Wii.

I can understand that Capcom wanted to make a shooter for the masses. I'm not too upset about that.

This angers me....very much. They were going to make the game we all wanted but decided it's too hard for Wii owners and we need a more easy game? This is very upseting and what does it say about UC? Is this game going to be extreamly easy to pass so that under 10 year olds can play too? ahaha this is a M rated game why in the world would they care if the younger ones find the game hard to play? They shouldn't be playing it at all! RE games have always been long and a good challenge... if Capcom gives me a really short on rails shooter game then i have lost a lot of faith in them...

To achieve this goal, Kawata admits that Capcom "... had to compromise to a lower difficulty level."

I can't wait to see the difficultly options if I buy this game - Easy, Beginner and Super Super Easy with infinite lives.

Kawata was part of the team that produced RE4 for the Gamecube which pushed the console to it's limits, he also went to lead the PS2 project which also pushed the PS2 to it's limits. Considering that the first light gun game prototype by Ralph Baer came almost 40 years ago this game is not pushing the Wii to its limits at all.

I'm glad that Retro Studios don't share Kawata's or Capcom's view of the Wii. I can see that this game will score lower than Metroid Prime 3 and I don't need a crystal ball to see that.

Personally, I would have loved to see the original 4 resident evils revamped and redone with RE4 controls and graphics.

wiiman555

Wow, that's way too many remakes.
