Good day, Gamespot. There seems to be some problems with my Wii and its abiliy to read discs. Starting a while back it would stop reading discs and instead give a message akin to "Unable to read the disc. Please refer to the Wii operations manual". I tried several other games, but to no avail. It even started giving a message that reads something like "An error has occurred. Press the Eject Button and remove the disc, then turn off the Wii console and refer to the Operations Manual.", however I cannot seem to find anything helpful in the manual. I have tried searching the internet but have not found anything useful -- until yesterday. I was told I could try cleaning it with a vacuum cleaner, and so I did. Now it is able to recognize the game inserted, but if I try to start the game, the Wii will try to load it, but will give the error message "An error has occurred. Press the Eject Button and remove the disc, then turn off the Wii console and refer to the Operations Manual." after a while. Now, interesting to note, this concerns only Wii games, as it plays GameCube games with absolutely no problems. Would any of you have any helpful things to say? Does anything need to be replaced? Is there anything wrong with the lens? I appreciate all and any help. tl;dr: Wii does not read Wii games, but reads GameCube discs without problems. What do I do?

You probably needs to clean your Wii's lens. Just buy the Wii's lens cleaning kit. You can buy online at Amazon or you can go to a gamestop, thats where I got mine. I think they have them at places like Best Buy and Walmart too, but I don't know for sure. If the lens aren't the problem, then you probably have to send your Wii to Nintendo, because when my Discs stopped being read for all games and when I tried using the lens cleaning kit I ended up having to call Nintendo and they said I had to sendmy Wiito them. And their website when I had this problem wasn't much of help.

Thank you for your response, kind sir. Indeed that is what I am planning to do next, if I can get my hands on one. I have tried using a cleaner for normal DVD players and such, but I understand that they are two completely different things. I guess I will have to hope that they sell the cleaning kits at GameStop in Norway.

Hopefully the problem is the lens being dirty. Because if not, you may have to call Nintendo to help you, and they will probably end up saying you have to ship it off to them and it costs like 70-90 dollars to repair, I forget the exact price of what it was. Well good luck

That just happened to me now. $96 for me (In Canada, without shipping .. if I drop it off to one of the locations they gave me). What sucks is I just got a bunch of games for my birthday so now I can't play them lol. I also had the lens cleaning kit, but that didn't work.

Mine just refused to read Metroid: Other M. People say it's the dual layer, but it still reads Brawl. So I'm currently debating buying the lens kit or just sending it to Nintendo.

with all these reports popping up at the same time there HAS to be a common link. For those of you getting the error: what games have you recently downloaded or played on your Wii prior to the problem? When was the last time you updated? What other channels do you use on your Wii?

Somebody brought up Black Ops as the culprit, I'm interested to see if you all have recently played it

I think Metroid Other M has a lot more content than Brawl. The graphics are buffed up on MOM so that could be why your Wii is reading brawl and not MOM.

Other M is the only game I ever had problems with too. I just restarted my wii over and over again until it worked. Up to 20 restarts sometimes.

Replace the laser. Call Nintendo or find someone in your area that can do it cheaper if its out of warranty. Cleaning the laser will only temperarly fix the problem. Had the same thing with mine. Ordered a laser on ebay, cost me $12 to fix my Wii.

Again, I'd like to thank you for your answers and suggestions. I went ahead and ordered a lens cleaner, in hopes that it would fix the problem. After first use, nothing happened, so I decided to try again. It read the game, but could not properly start it. I tried once more, after changing the cleaner, and, despite very long loading time, it would actually let me play the game, which was Mario Kart Wii. I played (and won) two races, and the loading periods seemed to be getting shorter, so I tried playing with 3 players, but after the first race, during the loading screen before the second race, I got the same error as before ("An error has occurred. Press the Eject Button and remove the disc, then turn off the Wii console and refer to the Operations Manual." ). It seems to me, that the problem is with the lens, yet I could see no dirt or dust after using the lens cleaner. I figure it might work better if I give the lens cleaner another few goes. However it seems to me, that the problem could be with the laser, and that it might need to be replaced (or at least, that's what I've read on some other forums). The Wii was bought when it was first released, so it is beginning to grow old, but it might still be under some sort of warranty.
