It works for Guitar Hero. It works for Rock Band. It works for the USB keyboard. It works for Animal Crossing.
What else do you want it to work for? Just curious.
A keyboard will in fact work, at least when inputting text into the settings or one of the channels. You do need at least firmware 3.0 however.
The USB ports are also used for the Lan adapter. As well as the Wii Speak microphone.

lol, I charged my cell phone and bluetooth headset with it.
I ironically use it to charge my PS3 controller. Its the only USB device that is always on so it works great for things like that. Also yeah the USB port does many things. I"m sure it could do more (and it probably will eventually) but i'm sure it was worth the couple of bucks it cost for Nintendo to put it in there. What else do you want it to work for? Just curious.
A hard drive.
Nice one... Keep on dreaming :)LOL you tried plugging a mouse into the Wii? Niiiice. Anyways, keyboard SHOULD work depending on what channel you're on. It won't work on most games, but I heard it works for Animal Crossing. It works on Internet Channel, and it works for typing messages to send to other Wii users.the usb ports are usles they are only used for guitar hero and i try several of things and they wont work i tryed mouse, keyboard, usb. what is the usb used for?

Just kinda curious... Has anyone put a USB thumb drive into it slots? Does it do anything? brettneo3012
Nope, nothing. The Wii doesn't support the generic USB storage device protocol.

It does work for Wii Speak and USB keyboards.
Plus there is a lot of 3rd party hardware that works with it such as USB microphones etc.
And it gives nintendo a lot of possibilities having the USB ports at the back as they can easily create peripherals for them.
