playstation 2 -> playstation 3. huh. guess brand doesn't equal sales.PS1 100 million
PS2 150 million
Xbox 32 million
Xbox 360 68 million
You really want to argue how brand recognition helps a product?
But look at the 3DS, one of it's problems was (and still is) that many casual gamers didn't understand that it was a completely new system that was more powerful and had it's own unique games, most just thought it was a standard DS with an option to play in 3D, same is likely to happen with the Wii U, remember at E3 last year, even some of the hardcore fans took a while to realize it was more than just a new controller.The other problem is that while the Wii brand is recognizable, it's often done for the very things that the WiiU is trying not to be, a casual system. You here Wii and you instantly think of games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit, yet the Wii U is getting a lot more in the way of hardcore titles, but keeping the Wii brand will cause a lot of people to not look past that and not give the system a chance. Honestly they should have a fresh start with this new system name wise, people will still see the Nintendo logo and know if they want to buy it or not, but dropping Wii from the name will give it a much better chance.
