It doesn't matter how you slice it, the Wii U is a bad name for a console. It makes it seem like the Wii 1.5, and it doesn't even sound cool (not saying that Wii sounded cool in the first place, but the U just makes it even worse). Now in no way is name effecting MY purchase of the console, they could name their console AiiDS and I would buy it. The concept name for the wii "Nintendo Revolution" should really be used for this, or one of their next consoles. I'm well aware that this console will be much less of a "revolution" to gaming than the Wii will be (from what I can tell), but really, Wii U just doesn't sound like a new console. It's like having a Gamecube U or a NES U.

So wait, you want to take the Wii name that has worldwide recognition and abandon it for something no one's heard before?

I'll be honest, I think that is a terrible idea.

Revolution might be one of the worst names for a console. If they had stuck with that name for the wii, nintendo would be laughing stock today.

of course it helps. but not having brand recognition doesn't instill doom, as you've shown with the PS1 numbers. not to mention the nintendo DS, which ditched the oh-so-popular gameboy name and ended up selling more than any video game system ever. and the example i gave of the PS3 proves the other side of the coin, having brand recognition won't guarantee success.

Absolutely right. I actually don't like the name Wii U either, it does just sound like a Wii 1.5, I don't like how Nintendo is just using their old names because they were successful and it'll click with people, I'd prefer a totally new name for a new console. You don't know how many people have thought that the 3DS was just a new DS revision.

But look at the 3DS, one of it's problems was (and still is) that many casual gamers didn't understand that it was a completely new system that was more powerful and had it's own unique games, most just thought it was a standard DS with an option to play in 3D, same is likely to happen with the Wii U, remember at E3 last year, even some of the hardcore fans took a while to realize it was more than just a new controller.

The other problem is that while the Wii brand is recognizable, it's often done for the very things that the WiiU is trying not to be, a casual system. You here Wii and you instantly think of games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit, yet the Wii U is getting a lot more in the way of hardcore titles, but keeping the Wii brand will cause a lot of people to not look past that and not give the system a chance. Honestly they should have a fresh start with this new system name wise, people will still see the Nintendo logo and know if they want to buy it or not, but dropping Wii from the name will give it a much better chance.

Nah, I'm fine with Wii U.

But if they really wanted to appeal to the nostagic players, it could be called N6 since it's gonna be the sixth Nintendo console after NES, SNES, N64, GC and Wii.

This would be a terrible idea for Nintendo. What they need to do is go back in time and re-name the Wii because it is the worst name for any console of all time.

Let's be honest, though. At the end of the day, regardless of what the Wii U is eventually called, it won't matter to either those who will get the system and those who won't. There's more than enough proof on both sides of the coin to conclude that a system's name alone won't save it or kill it. It's really just more of a preference thing at this point, but rest assured that those who are complaining about the Wii U's name now won't care about it should the system present enough content to appeal to them.

On topic, though. The "Revolution" train has long passed, seeing as how both of Nintendo's recent revolutionary platforms (DS and Wii) are passing/have passed on.

I can sympathize with Nintendo wanting to keep the Wii name going. I doubt many Sony fans would think ditching the Playstation brand would be a good idea. All industries depend on brand recognition as an easy way for fans of the product to keep coming back.

There is also a practical reason to keep the Wii branding going: the Wii U will be backwards compatible and will allow you to use your wiimotes with the system, which will still be called "wiimotes". These tie-ins from the Wii are important in making the WiiU more attractive to previous Wii owners (all +90 million of them). Just like how the 3DS lost sales due to consumer confusion because the 3DS was too similar to the DS, they could also lose WiiU sales because consumers view it as totally different from the Wii.

There were clarity issues around the 3DS that Nintendo has to learn from. One way to deal with it would be to give the console a totally new name, and I don't like that option. Another way would be to alter their presentation and advertising, and I think that is the best route. Give the console itself a distinct and memorable shape- just like how the Wii was so different looking from the Gamecube. Make sure that the ads show off the console and not just the touch pad controller

If Nintendo does opt for a name change they should probably have the name reflect the unique touch pad controller. However, they might not like that because it would distract from the fact that the console still has wiimotes.

I liked something like "connect" because wiimotes and touch screens connect you to games more, but that sounds too much like "kinect". So, thesaurus suggested "Bridge"

Too weird? How about "Join", or "Wii Join" which kind of speaks to them doing more online stuff to I suppose.
