WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND ONE VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAME ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

July 7, 2008 - This week's additions to the Wii™ Shop Channel are bigger, stronger and faster. It's all about excess with these electrifying titles. A new WiiWare™ offering puts you behind the wheel of a high-octane racer with no regard for speed limits. A cIassic Virtual Console™ game transforms you into a larger-than-life beast with a massive appetite for mayhem. Whichever you choose, there will be no skimping on the action.

Nintendo adds new and cIassic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Virtual Console

KING OF THE MONSTERS (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released by SNK in 1991, KING OF THE MONSTERS is an action/fighting game that features city-destroying battles between huge monsters. Choose one of six monsters and travel around Japan, stopping to fight in various famous cities with the aim of becoming the ultimate winner. In addition to punches, kicks and other regular moves, each character has the ability to use more devastating maneuvers, like throwing flames and shooting laser beams, to defeat opponents. Wrestling elements are also incorporated, as you must completely exhaust your opponent and get a three-count to pin him and be victorious. Along with the player-versus-computer game, multiplayer options allow you and a friend to enjoy one-on-one matches and two-on-two tag-team matches against the computer. Take on the challenge and claim the title of King of the Monsters.

You're not alone. I can't imagine anybody possibly defending the crap we've been getting lately. Since Nintendo hasn't even released a Wii game of their own in June/July, the least they could do is put a good VC game up. Nope. Nothing.

I don't even get my hopes up anymore on Monday mornings...

This is why my Wii is collecting dust in my basement...

For the past month or two, we've got nothing but crappy, overpriced Neo Geo fighting games ( half of them are just rehashes ) that are going to be on an upcoming compilation and shovelware Wii Ware games ( aside from Gyrostarr ). When the hell are we going to get another NES, SNES or Genesis game? What's it been now, six months? Damn this is annoying. Seriously, I want a ****ing SNES game. I grew up on that mother ****ing system, dammit. Not Neo Geo. I bet there's three people on Gamespot who had a Neo Geo as a child. Nintendo just wants to release as many Neo Geo games they can before the compilation comes out; obviously an attempt to whore money from consumers.

There has only been one week when there hasn't been a Neo Geo release since May 26th, when Neo Geo games began being updated on the Virtual Console again. That week was an import week, when Dig Dug and Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa were released. Since then, a total of six Neo Geo games have been released: Metal Slug, Ninja Combat, Samurai Shodown, Burning Fight, Fatal Fury 2 and now King of the Monsters. In those six weeks, only two non-Neo Geo games have been released: City Connection alongside Metal Slug on May 26th and Alex Kidd in Miracle World alongside Burning Fight on June 23rd. That means there have been four one game weeks in the last seven weeks, all Neo Geo games ( Ninja Combat, Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury 2 and King of the Monsters ). Seriously, what the ****.

Nintendo is really hitting below the belt now, they could easily have mixed things up and had just one other VC game. A SNES or NES game, even a Genesis or Master System would be very welcome at this point. I hate just sitting on my points because Nintendo refuses to release anything but Neo Geo until everything on the collection is out there.

Absolutely not. I don't care what we get as long as it's not a generic fighter or a Neo Geo game. Seriously, give me anything on the SNES. We've gotten like, what, one SNES game in all of 2008 ( Harvest Moon )? Completely unnacceptable.

Guys, you know this is summer and people dont play much video games in the summer. So why release a ton of games when people dont buy them??? It is proven more games will sell in the fall. They are waiting for that. Stop complainging and go outside and enjoy the weather.

Yes, it sucks you don't get the select few games that you want, but 1) whining isn't going to get you your game, and 2) all you have accomplished is that you have tarnished your reputation. I'll never be able to have a legitimate conversation with him because I can't take him seriously anymore. Too bad.

What's more, it's just video games. It's not worth it to absolutely freak out over this.

And if it bothers a person so much, they should go find an original copy. Most of them are dirt cheap on eBay, they might be worth something some day, and you'll get to play them the way they were intended to be played. Saying "why won't Nintendo release (Insert game here)!?! They're so lazy. No excuses", but then not going out and finding that game yourself, is hypocritical; it's just as lazy.

If Nintendo dished out Majora's Mask, Mario RPG, Earthbound, DK64, (Insert impossible-to-get-due-to-licencing-terms Rareware title here) etc, etc, etc, all around the same time (even within the next year), what would they have left for the 3+ years left in the Wii's lifespan? Nobody would check the VC anymore for new games, and they would just be wasting money and resources for a service that nobody cares about.

I don't see how you guys can be defending this. For the last month Nintendo has been releasing $9 Neo Geo games which will be included in a $20 compilation coming out later this month.

They are releasing 1 game a week when they have thousands of titles to choose from. Remember the days when we use to get 3 games a week and there was always something good among those 3?

They are slowly killing a service that had loads of potential.

Exactly, you are 100% correct. Nintendo did make a minor mistake IMO by releasing so many high-profile games near the start of the VC lifespan and now they have to compensate for it. Honestly they really only only have about 10-15 really good games to release in about five years, so they really need to start rationing them, which they have started doing. Believe me, the games that you guys want will come out, you just have to wait a while.

My only complaint is that Nintendo refuses to shut up about "casual" and "hardcore" while everyone else has pretty much been disassociating those terms after the Birdmen and the Fallacy got passed around the internet.

If Nintendo says SPOGS is for everyone, then i guess the arcade racer is for everyone. It's a Wiiware exclusive that will feature DLC to compensate the better value of the PC and PSP versions. Also, it was supposed to come out last month, so maybe it is a good thing that Plattchen got delayed two weeks (due to the somehow inevitable Gameloft game we'll be getting next week).

This is week 4 of Neo-Geo feed D4's pocket before SNK's compilation gets released effort (5 of 6, Alex Kidd the only interrupt).

Yep. And this week its one of the positive ones (just 6 more FF's to Garou: Mark of the Wolves!). It certainly looks great for being from 1991, and progressive scan will make those buildings stand out even more.

To the people saying there are only around 10 good games people want on vc for the rest of its life span..... ummmmmmm I know plenty of people who want other stuff besides the huge games like super mario rpg, dk, and earthbound. I mean those are great, but I was a huge nintendo fan and used to love the simple games like tmnt tournament fighters, tmnt 3, the original super mario kart(which should have been released with the week of Mario Kart Wii), and there are plenty of stuff from the snes and genesis days, they could even bring the old global guts game and I would buy that lol. So I know alot of people who would buy simple games that werent huge, just for good ole memories sake. There are probably hundreds of games from the nes, super nes, genesis, and 64 that I still want, but nintendo vc just arent delievering this year with not even my simplest of standards in those 4 systems to be honest.

Also I have one more thing to say. Im not a huge complainer, but the vc has been very week this year(this coming from a huge nintendo fan). We as paying customers and general fans have the right to complain if we see fit in that Nintendo is being lazy in that department. So I dont understand how we cant be allowed to complain at some point? I still love my nintendo wii and its the only console that has guts to be different, and yes the summer is slow for most games, then what better reason than to release a couple of great games from the past in the summer? lol.

It doesn't really bother me that much. What with the limited Wii storage and all. I could't save any game on my Wii now anyway. Besides I've always thought of summer as the time to catch up on games I've missed or replay favorites. Summer droughts happen every year. Just relax and in a few months we'll get a flood of games.

I'm sure Nintendo is just allowing crappy 3rd party games on the VC to help out 3rd parties and help relations with them. It might help out in the long run. That has to be it because obviously Nintendo would make more money releasing their own games which would sell very well, instead of 3rd party one which won't sell that well and Nintendo only makes a percentage of profit from.

I love the VC but i have a few complaints:

1.The only way we can try these obscure games is to bite the bulet and buy them. Solution: Nintendo should offer a free trial version for the VC games like Sony and Microsoft does for their consoles.

2.They keep releasing Neogeo games (i have nothing against the Neogeo, but i'm sick of these fighting games). Solution: Nintendo should release games from the other consoles to have varieity.

3.I hate having to delete some games to get other games when i want to (a.k.a the storage problem). Solution: Wait until E3 for any information from Nintendo.

Believe me, the games that you guys want will come out, you just have to wait a while.

I've said this before, but I'll gladly say it again...

If I have to wait 5+ years for the VC games I want, I would willingly take my Wii cover it with lighter fluid and watch it burn.

I assumed the VC was about money, and their price point for Neo Geo games seems to agree with me... but the joke will be on them when no one buys their crappy Neo Geo ROMs.

Right now, Nintendo is doing what Sony was doing at PS3's launch... their resting on their laurels. They got a ton of hype over the Wii after the DS was already a runaway success, so now they're getting arrogant and thinking anyone will buy any piece of garbage game they throw out there and they don't have to work for it anymore. Attention Deficit isn't Nintendo's problem, it's the problem of the people who can never be satisfied with what they have.

As for the rest...

I don't see these games as meal entrees. They're usually around ten bucks so it's more of a side dish of a game. Like chips go on the side of a sandwich. I don't even think I bought a game when I buy a game Virtual Console game just like I don't pay attention when I buy a bag of chips.

I always think that new games should be made and old games should be ported, but in the case of these they're older games that are already made, we're just waiting for them to be released.

Haha, what a horrendous week. Spogs got a 1.9 at IGN, and the video on the review page pretty much shows why.

The other is about to be released on a compilation disk, thats probably why nintendo has been pushing out all the NEO GEO fighters the past few weeks, so that they can make more money before people realize that there is a cheaper way.
