This worked for me - I just finished a level and went "Home" on remote. When I turned game back on my progress was saved from where I last was.

You can do it that way or do it the way it worked on the NES which is it saves on it's own

All VC games do that. Even if the game itself has no save option.  Just hit Home and go to the Wii Menu. When you come back, its in the same exact place. You can even "pause" it in the middle of a level. But if some else wants to play and resets the game, then you lose your progress.

I had a similar problem with the original Zelda. I wanted to save so my wife could play. Forgot you had to pause and then push up and another button to get the save screen.

That's how it worked on the NES, that's how I did it.
Although to keep the high score going I suggest the home button.

Either way you wont lose your info though
