WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLAS-SIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

Oct. 1, 2007

This is a special week on the Wii Shop Channel. Frankly, it's a gamer's dream come true: Nintendo is launching the new Import genre with the release of two games that previously have never been available in the Western Hemisphere on their original platforms. The first will be hugely popular with MarioTM fans, who will love reliving the style of his classic games as they encounter new skills, new levels and new dangers. Nintendo® 64 enthusiasts also get a masterpiece of the shooter genre and perhaps the best game never released outside of Japan. Welcome to Import Week for the Wii Shop Channel!

The two new clas-sic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. WiiTM owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii PointsTM to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Super Mario Bros.TM: The Lost LevelsTM (NES®, 1 player, rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Originally released in Japan as Super Mario Bros.® 2, this game has previously made only brief cameo appearances in the Western Hemisphere. Now available on the Virtual ConsoleTM in all of its original splendor, Mario fans will appreciate the familiar look and feel of the game, while finding that its updated game play creates an entirely new challenge. No longer content just to wear different-colored overalls, Mario and Luigi also possess different skill sets: Mario can stop quicker, while Luigi can jump higher. In addition to the clas-sic enemies already known to fans worldwide, there are also Poison Mushrooms, backward Warp Zones, and the occasional wind gust (which can help or hinder your progress) to take into account. And if that's somehow not enough, expert players can go looking for the game's secret worlds. So get ready to put your Mario skills to the ultimate test, and save the Princess again. Just don't be surprised if she's in another castle.

Sin & PunishmentTM (Nintendo 64, 1-2 players, rated T for Teen - Blood, Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, 1,200 Wii Points): Created by the legendary development studio Treasure, this is a game that hard-core gamers and fans of Japanese imports recognize as one of the finest Nintendo 64 titles to have never previously reached North American shores. Its unique combination of English voice-overs with Japanese subtitles (preserved in this version) has only added to the enthusiasm for its eventual release here. Experience the frenetic pace of a clas-sic shooter, while choosing from a variety of options and a number of different skill levels until you are ready to take on the full-blown challenge of Turbo Hard mode. Not to be outdone by the action, however, the intriguing story line gives the game its soul and draws you even further into the mix. Set in the near future, on an overpopulated Earth starved for resources, players uncover the intriguing mystery of two teenagers (Saki and Airan) and their battle against the Ruffians as they advance through level after level of nonstop action. Take a deep breath, gather your energy and prepare to see why this game is so highly praised.

Sin and Punishment worth getting for a non-fps gamer. Don't get me wrong I do like fps if it has the right taste for me (RE4). Is this game good enough to play for somone like me.

Yes, you owe it to yourself to get this, it's never come out in America before so this is quite exciting for me at least. VC monday from the gods for sure.

Sin and Punishment looks like a weird shooter and its 1200 points. Should I get this? I don't see why everyone's so hyped about this game.

Its 2 quality games first of all, and secondly, they are 2 import games so be glad they're here now.

Lost Levels for 600 points is maybe pushing it, but 1200 points for Sin and Punishment = win!!! I'm buying that in a heartbeat. Halo 3 can wait.

EDIT: just watched a clip of the sin and p... and is not a fps... so i may get it... it looks fun :) and is a import.. so it would be right next to my lost level :P

Thus i would have to wait a while to get it :(

I'd rather have two good games then 3 Not-so-good.

I've played Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels for SMB: All-stars on the SNES when I was a kid. I remember getting pretty far in this game but i've never beat it.

The never before released in America NES Super Mario Bros. 2 (A.K.A Lost Levels) has come at last. I'm so getting this the moment it's up at the VC channel. It's definately worth the 600 pts (the extra 100 cost). Finally get to play the NES version of it. So long I've been waiting for this and it finally happens. Definately a VC WIN this week!!!!!!!!!!!! No disappointments here.

This really isn't that great of a release. S&P was a DECENT game in Japan. Definitely not something to get your panties in a twist about.

Lost Levels WERE available on the SNES. I played and beat that when I was 12 or something. hahaha.

This is just a decent VC release day. I'm not going to get head-over-heals until they release Golden Eye (N64), Earthbound (SNES), Super Smash Bros (N64), Killer Instinct (SNES), Blades of Steel (NES), LoZ: Majora's Mask (N64), Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game (NES), or lastly, Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES).

When those are released, THEN I'll be excited.

I already beat Lost Levels on Mario All-Stars. It was a long time ago though. It might be worth it just for the classic graphics. I dunno.

I remember when Sin& P came out for the N64, thinking that it looked cool (from screens, descriptions, etc.). And just this past weekend I was watching video of it. It looks like a blast. 1200 points is quite a lot though.

Thus making it Nintendo's version of Panzer Dragoon in a sense?

I think you're right. They called it Super Mario Bros. for Hard Players or something.

But now you get to play the original Famicom Disk System version. Awesome!

i think that im going to download both today. i still have my mario all-stars game on the snes, but those graphics are not the original graphics.... plus i dont have my snes hooked up to anything right now and i'd rather play it with a wireless remote. sin and punishment looks really fun. after watching a youtube video of it earlier, im pretty convinced that i should get it. i gotta go find a wii points card after i get out of school today.

Aghh why does Nintendo have to be such dirty bastards about the imports. 600 and 1200?

AGHH.

If it wasnt for the fact that Treasure developed S&P, I wouldnt even be touching it.

It's the nature of the beast. All shoot em' ups, run n' gun, and on-rail shooters are short in lenght. They are meant to be that way by design. I'd rather have a short game with unlimited replay value than some long game that drags ass with no replay value.

It's more like Panzer Dragoon/Star Foxthan Ikaruga. I can say Soldier Blade issimilar toIkaruga.

As for me, I'm definitely going to download both games. Now, I'll have to order 2000Wiipoints and since I have 400 Wiipoints, I could download both games and with the last 600 Wiipoints, download Neutopia 2.

I would say S N P is more like a 64bit version of Space Harrior, except without the flying. I'm having a time working out which controls work better (it's a game that was definitely designed around the N64 controller's single analog stick). What's cool though is that unlike Europe, we don't have a time limit on purchasing imports (and did you notice that "import" is now a searchable genre on the sop channel--more to come?).

Wow I just played Sin and Punishment, and it was good. It plays like an Old-School plane shooter and like starfox 64 at the same time. You play as a human with a gun though so you can jump and do rolls and stuff to avoid enemy fire. I died at the boss on the 3rd stage, due to bad classic controller controls. Probly better to use the Gamecube controller for this 1.
