WII-KLY UPDATE: GREATEST GAME EVER ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Super Mario GalaxyTM next week? Can't get MarioTM out of your head? You and everybody else! To whet your appetite for all things Mario, Nintendo is offering a special treat on the Virtual ConsoleTM this week. It's not just any game, it's Super Mario Bros. 3TM - considered by many to be the greatest video game of all time (for at least one more week, anyway). It's a must-have title on a week that also features the first Virtual Console import title for Sega Genesis and a fun multiplayer golf game for TurboGrafx16.

Today Nintendo adds three new clas-sic games to the popular WiiTM video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii PointsTM to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased via the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Remember when no one had ever heard of a Tanooki Suit or knew that BowserTM had a clan of Koopalings? The game that made these things common knowledge is also considered by many to be one of the best ever made. Bowser and the Koopalings are causing chaos yet again, but this time they're going beyond the Mushroom Kingdom into the seven worlds that neighbor it. Now Mario and LuigiTM must battle new enemies, returning favorites and a new Koopaling in each unique and distinctive world on their way to ultimately taking on Bowser himself. Luckily for the brothers, they have more power-ups available than ever before. Fly above the action using the Super Leaf, swim faster by donning the Frog Suit or defeat enemies using the Hammer Bros. Suit. Use the brand-new overworld map to take the chance to play a minigame in hopes of gaining extra lives or to find a Toad's House where you can pick up additional items. All this (and more) combines into one of gaming's most well-known and beloved titles-are you ready to experience gaming bliss?

Alien SoldierTM (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older -Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points): As Epsilon-Eagle, you are an alien soldier who has been genetically engineered to produce maximum intelligence and strength. You were once a member of the criminal organization Scarlet, but when you decided to break from the group, you were forced into a showdown with Scarlet's new leader Xi-Tiger, who kills a hostage in his attempt to destroy you. Now it's up to you to take revenge against the bad guys in this side-scrolling action game! Choose from six different weapons and battle the bosses of Scarlet until you reach the final confrontation with the ultimate secret weapon!

Power Golf (TurboGrafx16, 1-3 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Power Golf sports a perfect combination of simple-yet-realistic controls and beautiful graphics. Swing away on 18 lush holes in one of three different game modes: the single-player STROKE PLAY mode and the multiplayer MATCH PLAY and COMPETITION modes. Enter tournaments as one of three different characters-beginner, intermediate and advanced. Wind strength and the slope of the green add extra challenges to each hole. Compete against other players in the standard NORMAL MATCH or ante up one of your clubs in the unique CLUB MATCH. Up to three players can play in COMPETITION mode, and a handicap feature is included to help novice players pull off breathtaking shots just like their advanced rivals.

SMB3 is mandatory- completing the original 3.

I will be pissed if they bring out Super Mario All Stars though.

If I didn't already own the Super Mario All-Stars cart, I'd be soooo stoked about SMB3. As it is, I'll just be awed by the knowledge that I own the only system cool enough to have all three NES Marios for download. Whoa.

Now, Alien Soldier looks interesting. If it's good enough I might just get it, especially since it's an import.

Hah, I knew that Alien Soldier sounded familiar. It's a Treasure game! Consider my 900 Wii points spent on that one already.

What is wrong with you people? Alien Soldier is the best game released today. Remove your Super Mario 3 rosed colored glassed and open your eyes to one of the best Geneseis/Mega Drive games never released in the States.

It was never released in the USA.

Effing hell gamespot ate my post. Here goes again. It was on the SEGA Channel like Golden Axe 3. However SEGA seems to have forgotten that was never released in the states besides a SEGA game collection deal. Alien Soldier wasn't part of a collection though. It has never appeared in any form besides the SEGA Channel which most SEGA Genesis owners didn't know existed.

More SEGA Channel only games have been announced for the wii vc btw.

Not sure if this belongs here or its own thread, but has anyone else had some weird graphical glitches with SMB3? For me, there's a strip going down the left side of the screen that is colored whatever the background (sky) color of the level is, be it blue, black, grey -- whatever. On the right side, everytime the screen moves, there's a strip the same width as on the left side that displays a ghost trail of strange glitches. There are also minor glitches of a similar ilk the pop up sometimes when there is movement on screen.

I've noticed similar minor graphical problems on other VC titles, but nothing like this. I imagine that the strips on the sides would be cropped out for people with TVs that have overscan, but has anyone experienced anything like this with the game?

I had and LOVED SEGA Channel. I really wish Nintendo would take on that approach, more so, with the virtual console. Pay a monthly or yearly fee and have a bunch of new games at your disposal every month that you can play as much or as little as you want. The SEGA Channel service was so far ahead of its time. Edit: I also remember getting extremely excited at the beginning of every new month because I knew there would be a whole new list of games. It was like Christmas morning on the first day of every month.

Those are glitches that existed in the NES carts. Hence the perfect emulation.

SEGA channel was a massive money pit for sega. You obviously have never heard of the stellaview system for the SNES that was done in Japan.

Nintendo has had online services spent hundreds of millions of dollars over 2 decades in fact on researching, implenting them. Japan the most connected nation was their test bed for these services.

In other words, if the original NES cartridge were played on a set-up without overscan, the same colored strip on the left side of the screen and the strip of glitches (during screen movement) on the right would be visible? This would probably make sense, as Mario doesn't seem to be able to go as far as the strips -- but why haven't any other games had the same problem?

It's funny you say it, because I've noticed it for years and have always wondered about it. I thought it was a problem with my cartridge for a long time.

Ah, good to hear confirmation that it's not just a problem with the VC emulation. So long as it's a flaw inherent in the original game, I've got no complaints.
