WII-KLY UPDATE: FOUR NEW CLAS-SIC GAMES MARK WII SHOP CHANNEL MILESTONE

June 4, 2007

For six months, clas-sic games have flowed at a steady rate into the gaming reservoir that is the Wii Shop Channel. And this week WiiTM fans will see that pool of games hit a new high-water mark, as Nintendo adds a wave of new entries: Nos. 97, 98, 99 and 100. Why not dive in and see what treasures you find?

The four new clas-sic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii PointsTM to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Milon's Secret Castle® (NES®, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): It is a world where music is the language of the people. An evil warlord from the north arrives and captures the castle. The princess is imprisoned deep within the castle, and the world's musical instruments are taken and hidden away. Our hero, Milon, takes it upon himself to fight the warlord, rescue the princess and recover the people's musical instruments. He has only his wits and the magical Bubble to aid him on his quest. Help Milon along the way by looking for hidden doors, finding secret items and defeating fierce enemies. Make sure to look for the shops inside the castle, where you can buy hints and valuable items. Whenever Milon finds a Music Box, he will be transported to a bonus stage. Each instrument you find will add a layer to the background music. Try to grab all seven instruments to create a performance worthy of a music-themed game.

ToeJam & EarlTM in Panic on Funkotron (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): During ToeJam and Earl's trip back home, a number of Earthlings hitchhiked on their spaceship and are now infesting planet Funkotron. ToeJam and Earl must track down the Earthlings in order to capture them in large jars and ship them back to Earth in spaceships. It is also their funky mission to find 10 beloved objects belonging to Lamont the "Funkapotamus," the source of all funk in the universe, so they can persuade him to return to his favorite funk-filled planet. ToeJam and Earl must use their "funk powers," such as Funk Move and Funk Scan, to assist in evading and capturing the Earthlings.

Dead Moon (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 600 Wii Points): This side-scrolling shooter includes a total of six scenes spanning areas from Earth to the moon. The story begins with a comet discovered in the vicinity of Pluto that is headed on a sudden collision course with Earth. Mankind narrowly succeeds in diverting the comet's course, and it crashes into the moon. However, investigations into the damage uncover that what hit the moon was not a comet, but a gigantic mother ship. Power up your ship, destroy enemies and fight your way through the bosses in an attempt to reach the moon's core and protect Earth from alien invasion. Enjoy the unique world of Dead Moon, including various stages with beautiful backgrounds, a power-up system that increases your attack as well as your defense and bosses that have you altering your ship's direction to fight them.

... and the 100th game in the Wii Shop Channel:

Zelda IITM - The Adventure of Link® (NES, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Mild Fantasy Violence, 500 Wii Points): Link returns to Hyrule to search for the Triforce and to awaken Zelda from an endless sleep. Embark on a quest to find the Triforce of Courage and save Hyrule from ruin. Learn magic spells, talk to people in towns to get clues, collect items to increase your power and explore six palaces where the underlings of the evil Ganon await you. This sequel to the Adventure clas-sic uses a side-scrolling visual engine unique to the series for more technical combat, and features more in-depth world roaming as Link encounters townsfolk while on his quest.

Milon's Secret Castle - never heard of it. Is it any good?

Toejam & Earl 2 - I hear the first one is much better, and I don't even have it yet

Dead Moon - another shooter. Doesn't the VC have enough of these already?

Zelda 2 - awesome game. But I already have it on the Zelda promo disc for Gamecube.

Too bad. Doesn't look like I'll be getting anything this week.

Do you people Expect, a High Profile AAA Most wanted title every bloody week?

quetzalcoatl45

I don't think people are complaining because there isn't a AAA title every week. They're complaining because there hasn't been one in several weeks. And there hasn't even been an N64 game in a couple months.

In any case, you need to calm down. Jeez.

I already have the complete Zelda collection on the GC collectors disk, so there's no need in buying it right now.  But I highly recommend buying it, especially if you want a challenge and are a RPG/Zelda freak.  Many good memories of playing that in middle school.

Dead Moon - another shooter. Doesn't the VC have enough of these already?

Zelda 2 - awesome game.

Dr_Corndog

No!  It does not have enough.  That has got to be the most annoying reponse across all forums, especially when the person doesn't know a single thing about the genre or the shmup that has been released.  You can pretty much guarantee that some one will always post, "Not another shooter."  I don't mean to single you out, but man that type of response just gets under my skin and if I could use harsher words on these forums I would.

Couldn't we say the same thing about Zelda games?  Doesn't the VC have enough of "these already"?

Nothing for me this week. I bought 2000 Wii Points and the first game that I downloaded was Super Mario Bros. It was my first game that I owned with my NES.

Not that these games aren't good, but there's a disproportionate number of shooters compared to other genres on the VC. On top of that, the genre isn't even popular anymore. I want to download Gradius III or R-Type III, but there's no way I'd want them all. The VC is oversaturated with shooters.

it's times like this i think nintendo must feel like that line from mitch hedberg's stand-up: "you can't please all the people all the time, and last night, all those people were at my show."  but they've released a lot of really fun old games...maybe not all the ones we all want, and yeah, it gets frustrating because economics and business probably drives a lot of their decisions to allow "lulls" between "great" game releases, but it's going to happen, and like so many have posted before, people are getting the chance to discover games they might have missed the first time around.  i know i've been waiting forever for some of my old favorites to come out, and heck, some of them might never make it to VC because of third-party issues, but i think nintendo has by and large done a commendable job so far trying to get games from across the board out there.  maybe that's just me, but i've downloaded a lot of games just to check them out, and i haven't been disappointed to the point of wanting to complain all the time yet.  i didn't buy my wii so i could complain...

You guys do realize that "I am Error" is not a glitch, right? When you talk to some lady in one town, she'll tell you that a special item is in Error's house or under Error's table, or something like that, and when you go back to the other town she told you about, you'll know you're in the right house if a man in purple (who kinda looks like Ryan Davis) says "I am Error". It's no glitch, it's an important part of the game!

Am I the only one who's excited about the release of TOEJAM AND EARL 2? :( Come on, though maybe not as good as 1, it's still an aewsome game that's worth a go for just 800 points. To me, This has got to be one of the top best VC weeks I've seen for quite some time now. [Don't you all think so too ;)] This is also the 1st time that there's two VC games that I'm interested in buying right off the bat :). Zelda 2 Toejam and Earl 2 Both great, great games and highly recommended . [At least I heard Zelda 2 is a great game. I never played it and I am very interested in buying it after hearing so much about it, and plus I am a Zelda fan :)]

and

Link: Faces of Evil

Look them up on youtube, you won't be disappointed ;)

Dr_Corndog

There is a misconception about the amount of shoot em' ups on the VC.  Only 12 out of the 100 games available on the VC are Shmups and they are:

  • Gradius
  • Zevious
  • Galaga
  • R-Type
  • Bio - Hazard Battle
  • Super Star Soldier
  • Gradius III
  • Soldier Blade
  • Ordyne
  • Blazing Lasers
  • R-Type III
  • Dead Moon

So where exactly is the over abundance of shmups?  If anyone is blowing it out of proportion, it's the people who have no clue in what they are talking about.  If you are wondering why I didn't include Contra III, Gunstar Heroes, Star Fox 64 etc... It's because, they are not shoot em' ups.

On the contrary, shoot em' ups maintain a strong following world wide.  It's the lack of knowledge and understanding of the genre that make everyone else think otherwise.

It's more like TERRIBLE localization. Why the hell would you name a character Error? Thats why people think it's funny/silly. Although you must admit that it is easy to mistake "I am Error" as an... Error.

Yes finally! Toe Jam and Earl 2! Ive been waiting for this. Personally I love it, and never played the original. That must be why but I think its awesome, I always loved how you could go into the options menu and make beats using the controller.
Not too excited about Zelda 2, just never liked it, as much as I try. Millions Secret Castle sounds good. I like the idea of music elements being added as you go, that would keep me going in the game if gameplay is okay.
Decent week for the VC. Its about time.

Toe Jam and Earl for me. I don't like Zelda II that much.
