It got a 10.

why would there be a review of a VC game?BrunoBRSWhy not? not all of us knew the original at the time and some old games does not translate so well today, as Mario Kart 64
Imagine that, its the exact same game and it got the exact same score.meetroid8
Came in here to say that...

When you're getting paid to write reviews, then yeah, I'd say it's a bad thing.
Great score, it deserves it since it's one of the best rpg's and games ever made.
Just goes to show too that the original version's superior to the DS remake, since IGN gave Chrono Trigger DS and 8.8
Anyone who hasn't downloaded Chrono Trigger on the VC needs to do so :P
they're pretty much the same, so it's a portability X big screen issue. i honestly don't like bringing games with long cutscenes (like CT and okamiden) with me. when i bring my DS, i bring something that can be played more casually, like pokemon.I don't know which one to buy, the VC or the DS game.

The virtual console edition of Chrono Trigger is cheaper than the DS version though.Great score, it deserves it since it's one of the best rpg's and games ever made.

My question is how the VC version could possibly be better when all the DS version did was add on to the original.
It's one of my favorite RPG games of all times. I got it for the DS when it came out and it still holds well.

Well, there's not much point adding onto a game when the things you're adding to it don't do anything for the game.
When Chrono Trigger was remade for the Playstation, they added Anime cutscenes and made it easier to unlock all the endings in the game. That's all it really needed. With the DS version there's everything that was already added to the Playstation version. Then there's a monster battle arena which is pointless, two new areas that don't do anything for the story and weren't really needed either, and a secret ending that foreshadows the events in Chrono Cross.
Basically they tried to make it easier for people to understand Chrono Cross better. I've watched the secret ending on youtube, and in my opinion it's not worth paying $40 for. Because all Square did with Chrono Trigger DS was make a lazy attempt at a quick cash in. The ONLY reason to even play the DS version is if you care at all about the secret ending. But if you've never played Chrono Cross then you won't care about that anyway so you're better off spending 800 Nintendo Points and just downloading it on the VC.
In my opinion of course :P
My question is how the VC version could possibly be better when all the DS version did was add on to the original.turtlethetafferBut also take away in that you are limited to playing it on a small screen. Smaller picture, worse sound. CT is a game meant to be played on a TV screen. Also the original SNES interface is better. The DS interface looks too bland and the self-completing map system is distracting and makes the world seem smaller and less interesting to explore since you get an idea of the approximate size of the surrounding area from the moment you enter. Furthermore the cutscenes interrupt the game because the same exact thing is displayed in the actual game after the cutscene ends. And the ending cutscene has Marle and Crono getting married ... wtf? Then there are the new locations and modes which, as many have said, are more like space-fillers than any attempt on Square's part to add worthwhile areas to explore or view. Oh ... and the retranslation is AWFUL. GOD AWFUL. DARK AGES --> ANTIQUITY. MYSTICS --> FIENDS. REVIVE --> ATHENIAN WATER. WHY????? Caveat: I haven't played the DS version yet, but I would not pay $20 extra for extras that clearly aren't worth a fraction of that amount. Even if you eventually decide to get the DS version for its extras, I think it makes A LOT more sense to spend a mere $8 for the SNES classic and concentrate on the unaltered gem without the amendments, before going for a "revamped" variation. I think some of the points I have addressed may factor into why the VC version has gotten better ratings/reviews on average than the DS version.

Just pointing it out, but you can shutoff the cutscenes, and have it set with the SNES layout on the DS version. That, and buying CT off of Amazon (or any game for that matter) is much cheaper than the standard price. I got my copy for $18 if I remember correctly.
[QUOTE="wiifan001"][QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]why would there be a review of a VC game?Rod90IGN has reviewed practically every VC game released. That's one of the biggest false statemets I've seen here. Are you being sarcastic?

Now, to go to "All reviewed games tab," click "Wii" and then directly under that click "Virtual Console"
IGN: reviewing Virtual Console games since December 2006.
We get about 24 games reviewed per page, times 15 for the number of pages and we get approximately 360 reviewed VC games by IGN
Just as Chrono Trigger has earned. Not many games can hold up that nicely after all them years.
I really wish they make a Chrono Tigger 2. =( ((Not Chrono Cross)). One focusing on the Trigger characters again...
Oh ... and the retranslation is AWFUL. GOD AWFUL. DARK AGES --> ANTIQUITY. MYSTICS --> FIENDS. REVIVE --> ATHENIAN WATER. WHY?????supmtI love Chrono Trigger and I think the DS version is arguably better than the SNES one (if only because you can play it on the go and the bonus stuff like the song player and beastiary are neat). Sound isn't a big deal once you use headphones, and I love the mapping. I just wish you actually got something for completing the maps in each area. But I will agree one one thing - I do not care for the translation, and I hate how they've changed the names of most of the items and weapons. The translation may very well be more accurate to the source, but it's also sterile as hell and has almost none of the charm of the original game. Some of that might be nostalgia on my part as I played Chrono Trigger when it launched, but the DS version reads like someone took the original game to an English teacher who pored over it and made a bunch of corrections that didn't need to be made.

My question is how the VC version could possibly be better when all the DS version did was add on to the original.
It is a pretty simple concept. Which of these two options would you prefer. 20 hours of entertainment for $8. VC version 25 hours of entertainment for $30. DS version Obviously the first choice is preferable for a rational gamer. Therefore, the first choice, the VC version, deserves a higher score. That's one of the biggest false statemets I've seen here. That's assuming that the only thing a rational gamer would care about is maximizing their hours-entertained-per-dollar-spent ratio.

and that you can't get it for cheaper buying used or on sale.I'm still gonna try my luck at finding a cheap DS copy :PKenny789Try amazon.com. Last I saw it, it was 15 bucks and some change.

What happens when you get rid of your Wii?In all honesty though, I don't think buying it either way is a bad choice. However, although I'd rather play this on a big screen, I'd rather actually own the game on a cartridge rather than have a download version of it that's stuck on my system.

The DS version isn't objectively better. It's SUBJECTIVELY BETTER for some people. For some, things like the retranslation or having to play it on a smaller screen make the experience less pleasant. Edit: scratch my first statement. I just learned that downloaded VC games are locked to the Wii on which they were purchased. Another ridiculous decision by Nintendo.

But when Chrono Trigger DS was reviewed, you couldn't find it on amazon for $15-19. Reviews are most valid the day that they are released, that review for Chrono Trigger DS was written with a $30 price tag in mind. If you were able to find Chrono Trigger DS for that cheap when that review was released, the score would have been higher. Please Log In to post.
