I've seen this twice on both IGN and also CNN so I figured I post it here.

http://ds.ign.com/articles/114/1142304p1.html

So we're only supposed to play it for 30 minutes and then stop? What's up with that? And what are we supposed to do? Buy a timer?

DING! Time's up.................. :(

Considering people watch movies in 3D that are often 2.5 hours or longer at a stretch, I don't see it being an issue to play a game for longer then 30 minutes.

I'd say Nintendo are taking precautions. From potential health hazards (using common sense ie children eye development is before 6, and sometimes adults get sore eyes after watching a 3D movie), or from potential lawsuits (ie parents blaming 3DS for children's bad eye sight, or causing headaches).

Bottom line is, there is enough research to give a definite answer, but we do have this:
Doctors question Nintendo's warnings

We're probably ok considering we watch 3D movies all the time, and so do kids. Nintendo is just cautious, how many take a break ads do you see in Wii Sports?

Have people never heard of taking legal precautions. Nintendo are just covering their hides when ignorant people inevitably start suing them. I'm sure Microsoft have the same cations for Kinect (warning may cause heart attacks or respiratory failure in unhealthy people). Stop making a big deal about it. This is normal business operations.

I do know that I, for one, do NOT watch 3D movies. I get incredible headaches from them.

And ONE study doesn't mean the issue is closed. So the doctor studied monkeys for 3 months.

Did he ask the monkeys how they were doing? :P

This is exactly right. There have been other threads discussing this and their sources aren't the best. CNN and FOX aren't giving me my gaming news.

Did anyone else catch the IGN UK Q/A video on the 3DS today/yesterday?

When asked about eye strain, one of the editors said it took 1 minute for his eyes to hurt. Another said about 30 minutes, while the third said he had no problems.

I'm kind of concerned about these impressions....I love the idea of the 3DS, but not sure I want something that could cause eye strain.

Anyone else worried about how their eyes will hold up?

if you have watched 3d movies like avatar or toy story with no problems you will be fine for atleast 2 hours or so them movies lasted for. It is only a minority who have problems, and they can choose either to play in short burst until they get used to it, turn 3D off or not buy it at all. same thing with console gamers going from 30fps and slow controls to a pc game with 60fps+ and super fast mouse control it can make you feel sick. you get used to it eventually though. i have no concerns i am ok with all different types of 3D including the old red blue types so I should be fine.

It's just a standard disclaimer that all 3D devices carry, but for whatever reason, the press is only making a big stink about it now.

well really they aren't, the majority of people won't even find out about this. it's not like it is breaking news on all the news channels. just a few web publications trying to drive in some traffic when the majority don't care, like the wiimote will fly and break your TV nonsense.

I bet if you look closely enough you would find that for 2-d games your not really suppose to play for more than an hour

I hear what you guys are saying, but I think the shorter viewing distance of the 3DS compared to theatre viewing is a factor. Basically, more work for the eyes.

I also hope you guys are right - I was just a bit worried because the source wasn't a generic news feed but rather from "gamers" themselves.

if you read the eurogamer review of pilotwings, the reviewer states that they have a problem with cinema 3D, but thought the 3DS worked great and he could distinguish everything really well. you should be fine. Nintendo wouldn't release something that would cause most people problems, otherwise sales would bomb.

I heard from somewhere that this is really only for children at around a certain age, because they aren't so developed or something like that. But this is a smart thing for them to do, yes it raises eyebrows of course, but hey, they will still sell very well. I wouldn't worry about this too too much.

Let's just say that Nintendo is much smarter than cell phone companies because they can apparently cause cancer... not saying it isn't true.. but just saying.

It's still pretty relevant I guess. They are covering their asses with the health warning, but also accepting that for some people, 3D may only be good for certain periods of time before becoming uncomfortable. The depth slider will greatly help with this, because people can find their sweet spot and adjust it whenever they like. As I learnt with NVidia 3D glasses, you can gradually train your eyes to take more depth, jump straight in with the full effect, or just find somewhere you're happy. For me, the 3D effect itself has not been the problem all these years; the glasses themselves have always caused me problems with headaches and discomfort because they put pressure on the nose/sinuses. It's probably down to the shape of my face or something, but it just makes me feel awful after a long period. I remember watching Avatar, I had to take the glasses off several times just to take a break and have a cold drink which seemed to help a little. But it was and always has been a problem with the glasses for me.

It's still pretty relevant I guess.

There is a unwritten rule (in the Nintendo DS/3DS Forum and the system-specific forums) that states that threads that have been dead for at least two weeks should not be revived. People should not be "bumping" them. If they wish, they can create a new thread on this topic.

Sorry..new to the boards. I thought I read all the unwritten rules, but I guess not :)

I figured I would get blasted for starting a new thread when one already existed.

The 3DS can make my eyes bleed I don't care, still getting it and still playing it for well over 30 minute intervals. Haters gon' hate.
