Considering how the games are evolving on the DS (especially Nintendo's) I'm not surprised that they went this direction. With how they made the controls work in Zelda for the Wii you would have to think they'd also take that step with the DS's version.
Plus since Zelda for the Wii wasn't supposed to be out on the Wii at first they didn't have enough time to get everything down with the motion controls. Zelda on the DS was built from the ground up to take advantage of the DS's hardware so I expected a greater use of the touch screen.
In Phantom Hourglass, I knew that there were going to be some touch-screen controls, like drawing a boomerang path, but I was surprised when I heard that it was entirely touch-screen controlled. I was really hoping for mostly a buttons game, and I was kind of disappointed when I saw that it would be entirely touch-based. It seems...forced. The game still looks great and I'll definately pick it up, but was anyone else a little bit disappointed?WaterDumple
yes
I may be wrong but...i think you hold down the stylus on the screen in one direction to walk, like in FFIII, while swiping the stylus to attk...I agree with the thread starter. But perhaps I'm just afraid of change.
I've got a few questions though? How do you walk around in the game? With the stylus? If so, how do you attack and do all sorts of other things?

At first, I was pretty apprehensive. But I seriously doubtNintendo would just tack motion controls onto a game, much less a Zelda game. I'm sure they worked hard on making the controls as intuitive as possible.

i agree with this, its just that i hope they didn't have to work too hard to make the controls intuitive. if you have a working control scheme, then decide to try a touch-only apporach, and if that takes too much effort to make it solid i dont see much hope for the scheme.
i didn't care for the way starfox on the DS tried to do it. im sure they wouldn't botch zelda with something so sensitive as the control scheme. maybe i am not an ideal DS user, but i like to use the touch screen as little as possible. i don't think zelda needs innovation at this point, there isn't a drop in sales or anything. i am a purist, and i want button controls. i know this game will make me a believer tho.mov
Actually the Japanese market for Zelda has all but dried up, TP bombed hard over there, and that is the GC+Wii version combined.
the dude who started this. here's what i have to say. all touch controls r going to be awesome. famistu gave it 39 out 40 for a ds game. besides if it didn't have many ds controls they would put it on the rather dead gameboy advance sp. omg. Gameboy Advance Sp. intitials: Gasp. touchscreen controls r what the ds is about. let me ask u something. did u buy the ds to play gba games on it or did u want to use the touch screen. d-pad is classic and all but if u look into nintendo's strategy u'll see that they r trying to amke systems that r advanced gameplay like the future or something. no matter what i have to get this game.
the rating on gamespot might be a lil fuzzy since they got rid of the bars. who thinks the bars were way better the the icon? me!!!!!!!
I was a little dissapointed as well, but after seeing what the touch controls for the game turned out to be, I'm happy they chose to use touch control rather than buttons. It's a really unique control scheme, but it seems to be working very well! :)theman64same here.
I don't care about the controls; I was hoping for a 3D Ocarina adventure.
EDIT: Oh well, still looks good.

Wow. Overreaction alert.
...And that's all subjective, too.
If all of the major DS games used primarily buttons, as they have (mario kart, NSMB, Yoshi's island), then what was the point of the DS in the first place?
I've been waiting for innovative touchscreen controls for a very long time. PH and NG are going to deliver.
