Was the DSi a waste of time?

Doesn't the DSi seem like kind of a waste of time with the 3DS coming out so soon? I kind of wonder if they didn't release the DSi at all and focused there efforts onto the 3DS how much better of a system we could have gotten. Either that, or releasing the 3DS later. I feel like the DSi ware was a gimmick and where are the DSi exclusive games? (not the DSi ware games) Not saying I'm not impressed with the 3DS cause I am, very much so.

Nah....

the DSi was a huge stepping stone in terms of the DS's OS. It was also very innovative by bringing cameras into play. oh and it also eliminated the GBA slot, which basicly made GBA cartridges 100% obsolete. to answer your question straight up... No it wasn't. Nintendo is just being really lame by releasing a new system so soon...

The DS has been out for 6 years, I think it has been plenty long since its launch to release another handheld, as this is what they have always done. They release about 3 revisions of the same handheld gen and then come out with a new gen in about 6 years. Cannot wait for the 3DS.

soooo taking out gba backwards compatibility is a huge stepping stone?? sounds like a step backward imo. and i think the dsi was a waste, theyre releasing alot of systems it seems like, and the dsi xl or whatever its called is also a waste... i mean think of all the people that bought a dsi and then the dsi xl came out and they were like hey its bigger ill get that! then the same day they buy it they find out the 3ds is coming in the same year.. idk just seems everything was so close nintendo didnt seperate the release days for the systems well enough i mean at least a year to 2 years each right? sounds reasonable and keeping the system fresh

I got my DSi towards the end of last year and I'm pretty happy with it. I've still got my DS Lite and a GBA SP if I want to play GBA games (which to be honest, I don't), and I do think it's the best iteration of the DS (well, maybe the XL, depending on what you want). Screens look even better, slightly better shape (imo), nicer material and it's apparently faster (though I'll have to take other people's words for that as I can't remember whether the lite took all that long to load anything). Pretty much all the minor changes were improvements (for me at least), though I could do without seeing the backlight shining through the casing (when you hold it at certain angles) and the occasionally squeaky hinges. :P

If I had been thinking about buying it within the recent 3 or 4 months though, I'd have just waited for the 3DS, but even though it could be called wasted potential I'm still happy to have what I consider to be the best type of DS to play on for the time being.

I'll just agree with what several others have said. If any was a waste of time, it's the Lite, because it added nothing new other than a new look. The DSi , on the other hand, evolved the line in ways that will carry over to the 3DS, including the SD card, cameras, and presumably the Web browser. It also brought in a huge number of sales for Nintendo, and led to the XL.....the best visual and audio experience on the DS so far.

The DSi does seem kind of pointless when you look at how close together Nintendo is releasing their sibling systems.

I'm still on the DS lite, and that's only because my original broke. I've played the DSi, and it's not as though the gameplay for DS games is that much superior to the previous models. If I was to go ahead and buy another DS it would be the 3DS since so much attention is being focused towards it, and Nintendo would most likely take a break with their handhelds.;)

Everyone with a lite clearly says its a waste because they have not experienced the greatness of the DSi. The DSi gave Nintendo with the few features it added the time to fully develop the 3DS. The lite could not have survived like it has without a better option. Without the DSi's new features I would have completly stoped playing my DS long ago.

The DSi wasn't a waste of time of you didn't own a DS lite. It was a huge step up from the original DS and a step in the right direction for the system. The DSiXl was a total waste, just like the GBA micro.

not to me. i use it every single day, even when it's not for gaming. hell, i've even used it to work on the internet. and the screen resolution/size is better than the DS phat, and it's at least half the weight. if someone asked me if i would do it again if i was thrown back in time, i would.

I still own my lite and never experienced the DSi, but I still said it wasn't a waste.
I agree, the DSi helped Nintendo develop the 3DS. The 3DS would have been completely different if it wasn't for the DSi.
The lite was released in 2006, it wouldn't have survived for 4 years.
Nintendo needed a new model, something that isn't some redesign from the phat. People needed something new that catches their attention.
The DSi was the right step for them.

But likeSoulreavercross said, the XL was indeed a waste, just like the micro.

No it was not a waste. I never owned a lite and playing dragon quest IX on the DSi will be epic. I also got to play POP IYAWN from dsi ware. So it was not a waste.

Who was it a waste for? If you didn't buy one, you didn't "waste" anything. I've yet to hear from anyone who bought the XL who didn't think it was awesome, so it's not a waste for them. It's made a lot money for Nintendo, so it wasn't a waste for them.

I stuck with my DS Lite. But the Dsi and the Dsi XL were not wastes. from nintendo's standpoint, they got more money due to people buying the new revisions, and got to test out some things, which they can now improve upon, in their next gen handheld, the 3DS. From customer standpoints, buying a dsi is not a waste, because it can do more. internet browser/mp3(though I hear converting files is a b****) and dsiware, which has games that have almost made me buy a dsi just for them lol. and the xl is not a waste because if you have bad eyesight, you need it, if you just bought it for a bigger, cooler screen...then keep it. You can play those classic ds games on a nice big screen, instead of on your 3ds. along with all of the stuff the dsi had, mostly dsiware.

Screen resolution on the DSi and DSiXL is exactly the same as earlier DS: 256x192px.

Ok, surely you've all noticed that Nintendo makes a crapton of money every time they release a new DS. It's not about making technological bounds, they've all been fairly minor for the most part. It's all about the Benjamins.

Well all those 3DS games which have been announced can't be played on the DSi or DS. And with this being the undisputed successor, support for the original DS will drop off at some point.

Actually a lot of people still seem to believe the 3DS is just another iteration of the DS. That if you were to flip the 3D off there would be no difference between it and the DSi.

Which gets to my point... even without the 3D this is a completely different handheld. No you don't have to get one. But just realize that eventually all the developers are going to transition over to this new platform.

Oh, and in truth most people will probably not have any negative reaction to 3D. The number of people that do is generally agreed to be a minority, and for some its not caused by 3D effect itself but rather the rapid flickering used with shutter or polarized glasses based 3D.

uhm, the dsi wasn't a waste of time at all. as long as you're pretty conceited and like games, its a nice match.

XL = game/heavy duty paperweight. i like to work with my windows open, so win/win for me.

Actually a lot of people still seem to believe the 3DS is just another iteration of the DS. That if you were to flip the 3D off there would be no difference between it and the DSi.

My main point is what Cruse said refering to those who have a DSi but refuse to get a 3DS as "silly",if people don't want a 3DS just because they have a DSi,why are they silly?

i think you're overreacting to a joke. he was just saying "seriously, who does NOT want a 3DS?" :P

thank you my exarchdisagreer, (we agree know a days) I just used silly instead of a meaner word.

It was a good move for Nintendo. The suspense of waiting for the 3DS may be too long for some, making them buy a DSi. Also. once the 3DS is released the price tag might not appeal to everyone, so further waiting is need for a price cut. The DSi , i believe is for those who cannot afford a 3DS or aren't interested in 3D i.e. casual gamer.
