Was there a firmware update for the 3DS to solve theblack screen of death? And, did it work? I read one post by someone who said it didn't work for him/her.

Yes there's an update and it is said to solve it. I downloaded it and have not had it yet. Just check your updates under system settings and you'll see system updates.

Why are people calling it a "Black Screen of Death"? It makes NO SENSE. Nothing is failing to the point of hardware destruction. Its not like a Windows "Blue Screen of Death". Or any other "Color of Screen of death".

This is not anything "of death". If it happens, you reboot the system. Then it works again. NOTHING AT ALL like what happened with original Xbox 360's.

For some people, it was a real issue. That is why I am asking. the fact there was a firmware update or whatever you call it supports this idea.

Supposedly it didn't fix it. It's been reported that there's a possible fix. Apparently the included SD card is formatted in the FAT file system when it should be formatted in FAT32. People are saying this fixes it. I still haven't had the "black screen of death" yet but I did this anyway just in case as it's really easy.

Here's the link in case people think I'm making it up. It's just a rumor right now though that this fixes it.

Sorry, I'm not experienced in this kind of stuff, but are you saying that for SOME people that the it's possible the problem can be solved by changing the SD card?

The BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH is a catastrphy! How in the world did a company like nintendo let that happen to people who paid 250$ for this brand new device? Its just so incredible for this to happen on nintendo.

Yeah or just formatting the one that came with the 3DS. I formatted mine and didn't have any problems, although I hadn't had the black screen yet anyway so that might not mean anything. I don't know if it really works, but it's worth a try.

Just rock out the firmware. I also hope they send out another one soon to fix the hang up on some of the menu screens. I've been stuck on the black Nintendo 3DS screen with the red ripples for 5 minutes before. :/

stupid masses, but whatever, if that was the problem, i didnt get it cause i switched sd cards to one with music on it. that is really dumb if that was the reason, if they include something with a system it sould be functional to the system out of the box. anyway i love my 3ds

Blue screen of death on windows didn't mean you destroyed your hardware, it just meant the system crashed and the OS couldn't run any more.....exactly like this "black screen of death".

it's more of a black screen of low pressure faint than "death".

As far as I know, based off of a phone call to a Nintendo rep a few weeks ago, the first firmware update had nothing to do with a fix for the 'black screen of death'. That firmware update came out one day after launch, and at the time they wouldn't have had anything ready to remedy some unforseen problem.

So my answer to you would be no, there has been no firmware update to the 3DS with a fix to the 'black screen of death'.

If there has been a second or third or more system updates since the first one I don't know because I still can't get my 3DS to update.

It's not terribly uncommon to get a brand new PC and get the "blue screen of death," because people aren't always knowledgable enough to update their drivers. (And the 'black screen of death' is just like this, as someone else mentioned, you can typically restart the computer on a blue screen and be fine until the next one or until it's fixed by updating your drivers or whatever). It sucks it happened but it's a new system, bugs aren't too surprising. Nintendo apparently fixed it with this firmware update, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Same here. It was the first thing I did after calibrating it.

Unfortunaltely mine got the black screen ( I was also really irratated since I was on my last turn for Ghost recon and lost all my data) but olny once.....

I did some research and finally got it to update (for some reason it wouldn't update at my house so I went over a friend's and luckily the update went through :) and I also reformatted the card. So far it has been good but honestly have not been on it much because of work/school.
