I'd try a touch generations game: Nintendogs or Brain Age or the like.  They are all heavy on stylus use and will teach you all of the cool features of the DS.  Then, for the second game, get something in a category you like (FPS, platformer, sports, adventure, etc).

For sure MK has to be on your radar, if you got Wifi it should seal the deal, I wouldn't get 2 mario games though so NSMB can replace Mario Kart for now if you do't have Wifi. Pokemon and FF3 and FFChcobo Tales Should be on your radar.

If you have GBA games, play those too!

Really depends on the kind of games you like. I'm surprised you'd get a DS without having first gotten some good games in mind, but the DS does have a lot of good games so it doesn't really matter. I'd recommend Trauma Center and Hotel Dusk: 215. If you dislike challenging games or text heavy games, then avoid my suggestions.

The games I've had the funnest times with have been (in order) Pokemon Pearl, Meteos, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, and New Super Mario Bros. I'd recommend any combination of these four games. However, there are many more great ones out there, so check out reviews before deciding!

the two games i chose to start with were mario kart and elite eat agents and i had a lot of fun...id recommend getting a screen protector before playing eba tho because there is some pretty intense touching...but if you are lookin for protectors and a case the two i chose were from hori and i bought them off of play-asia

Trauma Center and NSMB will make you mad after you beat them within the next day. definetly not good games to own alone.

Mario Kart (only if your going to be playing online)
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin (long and addicting game, easily top 5 on the ds)

those are my 2 favorite games on the ds, and the first 2 games I had when I got my ds, and they lasted me a long time

I definetly wouldnt get Nintendogs, Its very repitive and got boring for me after the first hour, Another game I would leave out is New Super Mario Bros. I found it to be to easy and way to short

Trauma Center's really fun, and hard too which extends your playing time, but it's just too short to recommend as your first game. It's a great game to add to a collection, but not if it's your only game, you'll need a new game in a week tops. Haven't played Cooking Mama, so I can't say there. For a first game I'd try to maxmiize replayability. A game like Meteos uses the stylus very heavily and is more or less infinitely replayable (assuming you like puzzle games, it plays simiarly to Tetris Attack, but with a stylus). Elite Beat Agents is also highly replayable and loads fo wacky fun (assuming you like rhythm games). Of course, for the ultimate in playing time, it's hard to beat a game like Animal Crossing, or maybe the Sims if you're into that.

i got animal crossing and thought it was LAME. wow it was lame. just walk around and talk to animals. no kickassaction.

hrmmm, duh pokemon. that game has been the ish sinse i was 10

i don't like puzzle games at all but i picked up meteos and wow, it blew my blacknwhite socks right off. intense as hell.

lunar knights is seriously awesome but seriously hard towards the middle which makes it pretty long. its kinda like castlevania but with better visuals and i think, better gameplay.

so....in closing: POKEMON, LUNAR KNIGHTS...and if enough moneys left....METEOS.....and don't get ANIMAL CROSSING.

Super Mario 64 DS is kind of long and challenging, alot of features from the original and mini-games. Mario Kart has alot of things like grand prix, mission, battle and versus, you can also vs ur friends if they have a DS too! Animal Crossing is a really long game that lasts for a long, long time! So Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing I recommend

I personally really like Hotel Dusk Room 215 for a single player game and then maybe something like Mario Kart DS (excellent multiplayer and single player) or Advance Wars.
The games that have stuck with me are the ones I keep so you can see my colleection in my sig.
It's also worth noting the Phoenix Wright games are cool, Viewtiful Joe is cool, a few good RPGs out there, action games, there's everything (minus the sports games).
