Abra is crazy, depends what game though. In Diamond (I guess its in everyones) you can trade a monchop for an abra in the first gym's town.

I normally have a HM pokemon (all HM moves) and my starter pokemon. That technique works up to like the third badge, then you should catch a few more.

Any Poke'mon that learns attacks at an early level are great for when you first start.

These are usually element-based Poke'mon.

Starly, and some people may disagree with me, but I found Budew to be a fine "in game"(As in, not PvP) monster.

Also, as soon as you get the old rod, get yourself a Magikarp, it was awesome, and it still is.

What most other people said.. and if you didn't pick the fire monkey pokemon as your starter, catch a Ponyta when you get the chance, it's the only other fire type in the game besides the ones you get after you beat the elite four.

Wow that is the only time I have ever heard that....good for you. I personally like Budew as a starter although you will have to be very picky about what you do with it if you want it to evolve into Rosellia as early as possible. If not just go underground and find a heart scale to teach it any mves you forgot to teach it (sure this is about the middle of the main game but whatever). This will all seem worth it when you have a kick ass Rosarade.

Yeah, I forgot about Pokemon that when evolving lost all chance of learning new moves(IE: Most Pokemon who evolve via stone) and even though it learned new attacks.....he was weak XD, the heart scales saved it, later....

I actually really like the Budew. It learns some pretty sweet moves as it evolves and I ended up using it to beat the final four.

I'd say: Starly, Shinx, and the pre-evolution of Roselia, cause when it finally evolves to Roselia, and you use the sun stone to get Roserade, you got one badass grass type...

The humble bird pokemon at the beginning is sure to help - Starly. Even though I opted for a Hoothoot.

turtwig sucks in the beginning but if he is torterra he is the best of the 3 beginners...! You also can catch abra (sucks also in the beginning), shinx and starly. Luxio and starevia evolves on lv 30 and learn some good attacks as brave bird or thunder fang and discharch (srry for bad english).
