The PS4/XB1 are pretty powerful and can last awhile so I was thinking Nintendo might be the only one who'd need a new console 5-6 years from now. I don't see the need for a new controller. So it's safe to say the next one might be a power play. I'm thinking:

- two sku's 250gb and 500gb (what do you think of one sku coming with a traditional controller and one with a gamepad)

-more stable dedicated servers perhaps by then Nintendo will be more internet savvy

-A more organized eshop. split into apps, games, demos, trailers and etc. ya know rather than seeing a single game with it's own category being one of the first things you see upon opening the eshop

-a survey channel so nintendo better understands each market

-4-8gbs of ram idk whatever works for them

-acquiring monolith and possibly epic games and platinum games to build up a stable list of 2nd party games

-funimation streaming app nuff said

- a sooped up gpu/cpu to handle it all

-possibly a partnership with amazon, pandora, and some other services to bring their apps to a nintendo console

I know that's an excess of stuff and some might not be needed but what do you think?

1) If they are launching a new console in 2015-- they should have 12GB of RAM and two GPUs (one that is on par with the PS4 and the other being the GPU from the WiiU).

2) If they are launching in 2017-- I think the console should feature 16GB of RAM and two GPUs (one being easily superior to the PS4 GPU and the other on par).

The way to make these specs happen at $300-400 is to build the system without an optical disc drive or a hdd and to instead build the system to use solid state carts.

you cannot predict hardware that's gonna be used in 5-6 years. You never know which direction technology will follow, what you posted might be the most reasonable tech to put now but maybe in 5 years it will be totally unimaginable to run on this hardware.

Common sense from the creators of it. But most of all, they need to get the dev kits out to developers a few years in advance, that is their main problem.

you might be right 5-6 years from now 4k tv's might be cheap enough to be common place in homes. In which case we might see a monumental leap for all console makers.I just hope my favorite game makers survive. Can you imagine Nintendo games pushing 4k?

Obviously as said, it'll simply depend on what tech is available at the time of them deciding to release a new system.

That said, IMO Nintendo actually needs to be the last of the 3 to release, or even considered, their next system. It might sound stupid, but my thinking is they need to see what the PS5 and the Xbox 4 will bring to the table, and then top them, a power play of sorts. They also need to do what Sony has done with the PS4 and work with developers and publishers to get the feedback they need to create a system they actually want to work on, because when they released a system that was in the same ballpark as it's competitors (GameCube) they got 3rd party titles, sometimes even ending up with the superior versions. But when they release a system like Wii U that is severely underpowered it's really a case that they can't work with Nintendo, more than they don't want to, as there are simply too many costs involved in developing an exclusive title, or a separate version of a title for a system with such a small install base, that doesn't appear to be growing.

@ldustin: I wouldnt be a fan of the two GPU idea. its an unnecessary waste of money and power (and this heat). one stronger GPU would be preferable. the only argument i can think of for 2 GPUs is one for graphics and the other for GPGPU stuff but i would rather provide the 1 stronger GPU and let developers decide how they want to use it.

carts would also be a non runner..too expensive. although the cost of flash memory is going down its nowhere near where it needs to be to distribute games again and doesnt look like it will be there any time soon.

i think the whole gamepad idea also needs to be scrapped. i would prefer to see a wiimote 2 and nunchuck 2. there is plenty of room for imporvement in that area.

for the internals i think the biggest influence on that is whether nintendo want to seriously pursue 3rd parties or not.

if they do then hold off until we know what the PS5 and co are doing then be around that area (as spike 6958 mentioned). nintendos own studios also need to be ready for a big tech leap though. you are probably looking at a 12 core 2GHz CPU (basically more advanced jaguar cores) and a GPU matching 3 780TIs for the PS5 and X2 in terms of horsepower (with around 40GB of ram). granted thats a very rough guess for the PS5 and X2 on my part :P.

if they dont want to build a platform for 3rd parties then a 64bit ARM based platform simply because nintendos developers are familiar with it and have well developed tools for it. they would just need an upgrade for the console. a lot more code could also be reused between handheld and console thus making development more efficient and cost effictive. with active cooling it should be possible to clock an 8 or 12 core of the latest cortex based processor at the time to 3GHz. of course the cores would also be optimised for games (OOE execution, more cache, better IPC and so on). GPU around a geforce 780. 6GB of Gddr 6 or 7 (assuming a 2016 launch) with 4.5GB for games and 1.5GB for the OS.

whatever route they choose they need to add a HDD as standard (1TB if going the power route, 500GB would be fine with the less powerful setup). an ethernet port would also be nice, wireless b/g/n/AC and an 8X or higher disc drive.

its going to be interesting to see what nintendo do for their next platforms.

The technology that would potentially power any new console hasn't been released yet.

Start by being able to keep up with other consoles & come up with something new to the table. Plus give a lot of good titles on the release date of the new console.

I want to see POWER GLOVES !! The perfect evolution of the wiimote and nunchuck. Think about it, use just use hand gestures and movements to control the game, sickness.
