I say it depends on the game. For me, I enjoy 2D platformers more than the 3D version.

I prefer 2D environments with 3D characters or special effects. The New Super Mario Bros is a good prototype.

3D environments give me motion sickness quite easily.

It depends on the game. Some games are better in 2D, some are better in 3D. So I picked Equal.

Wow I'm surprised. In a day of age where 98% of console games are 3D, 2D still has a lot of support. I guess the Virtual Console and DS are paving the way.

well it most certainly depends on the game doesnt it? side scroller mario games are better off 2D, if made into a solid 3D game it would be very weird. on the other hand im sure the 2D okemon games would have been much better if they were in 3D.

well since my favorite 3 games are 2d (Kirby Superstar, Donkey Kong Country 2, Super Mario World 2: Yoshis Island) I would have to say 2d is the best, 3d is fun though dont get me wrong, but 2d has had such good games

It all depends on the game. RPGs I like both. Platformers I like 2D. You can't reallyt decide which you prefer in general.

I truthfully feel that the only games which are superior in their 2d forms are puzzle and platform games, most other games have made the transition from 2d to 3d quite nicely.

It is genre-specific, and at times game-specific, but I'd tend to prefer 2D.

2d games are a lot less forced than 3d ones. 2d are more "video game"-ish, and I imagine that the only reason 3d gaming is persued so aggressively is because it looks really nice. That is a real positive, admittedly, and there are still a lot of great 3d gaming experiences. Ultimately, however, 2d marginally better. Are strategy games even posible in 3d? Isn't any game involving planning hampered by 3d (especially when cameras are involved)?

Seems that people like both equally. Too bad that isn't apparent on game releases where 98% are 3D. Well so far in the Wii's case 90%

Just to answer your question - the best example of 3D in strat games is Homeworld, but it is also utilized in the Total War series (height in terrain dramatically affects gameplay) and more subtlely in mainstream strat games like Supreme Commander (to calculate firing trajectories).

Yes but I do agree with him on some notes. Why hasn't there been a GOOD 3D Castlevania game yet? Same with Sonic? *though I think he should work just as good in 3D as in 2D* How about a 3D Street Fighter? Just like 2D can't do 3D's interactivity, 3D can't do that fast past yet relaxing control of 2D. The closes thing 3D can get, is to put a targeting icon.

well some games work in 3d and some dont. Like MegaManX 7 they tried a mixture of 2d and 3d and it just didn't work out so they went back to a 2d side scrolling game with 3d sorta graphics. Then there are games like FPSs that just can't be done in 2d.

Mmm it really depends,i'm goign to say 3D overall although alot of fun can be had with 2d games that can't with 3d games. This is also why i think Super Paper Mario is going to be amazing,it's the best of both worlds :)

2D is classic as always. But, even though I love 2D, 3D also offers great opportunity's for fun. I picked EQUAL.

I love 2D games but I love the sense of freedom in 3D games. 2D games which simulate that feeling are rare but are also the reason that I voted the Equal option.

Interesting topic.  The 3D games seem to only get better (interactive environments, graphics, physics), but the 2D games give me a nostalgia feel.  I voted equal.

Not true, 2D evolves along with 3D, it's just that they aren't produced more. Take the handhelds for example. Look how much RPG's and platformers have evolved.
