480i works with your ordinary TV. 480p requires your TP to be EDTV (not HDTV). To be able to run a game at 480p you need to have component cables and 5 input slots for them at the back of your TV.:(. What the hell is an EDTV? is that like a T.V in between an SDTV and a HDTV?
This should clear any doubts:

Enhanced Definition TV. It's not real HD, but it displays the image in a 16:9 ratio as oppposed to the 4:3 ratio on a normal TV.

i need some help with my tv, all of you AV people. i just got a $300 tv for my room that has a spot for component cables and widescreen(making it an EDTV). if i go and buy component cables for it, will games look notably better in 480p than 480i? is it worth the price of the cables for the difference in quality?yoourrmoom
Are you sure about that, because my tv has component plug ins, but I can't find any info on what my tv can handle.gamr92

Yeah, they are basically 480p tubes. They are usually pretty cheap and pretty good quality. If you really dont want HDTV but want a good cheap TV, you really should get EDTV over SDTV. Besides, tubes still have better contrast over most flatpanal tvs ;)

hey man f*** u I just got the tv a year ago so that shows how you read all the posts (WINK WINK) dumb @55
That's basically it. SDTV would be 480i, the EDTV 480p and the HDTV 720p and up. As long as your TV supports component cables, it'll handle 480p.CerealEater
Quote from truth. yes. the component cables just allow you to run the game in 480p. it just makes the game a little crisper and the textures are less blurry. entirely worth it IMO.

Naw, I just didn't have my post posted before others replyed, weirdo. :P So what if you got the TV a year ago, you basicly wasted 100$ on a outdated TV (Mono TVs is from pre 1995 before Stereo ones became more mainstream) that the store was probably trying to junk off on someone as quick as they could, sorry but the term I used is just what that TV is.[QUOTE="yoourrmoom"]i need some help with my tv, all of you AV people. i just got a $300 tv for my room that has a spot for component cables and widescreen(making it an EDTV). if i go and buy component cables for it, will games look notably better in 480p than 480i? is it worth the price of the cables for the difference in quality?CerealEater
