What excatly is this? How do you know if you T.V and support it? Do you need a Hi-Def T.V to play it like this?

480i is what you have on a standard def tv. 480p is basically the lowest hi-def setting. That is the simple way of desribing it. If you wish to learn more, do some research.

480i works with your ordinary TV. 480p requires your TP to be EDTV (not HDTV). To be able to run a game at 480p you need to have component cables and 5 input slots for them at the back of your TV.
This should clear any doubts:

Above the referred resolutions, the image output is considered to be of High-Definition.

That's basically it. SDTV would be 480i, the EDTV 480p and the HDTV 720p and up. As long as your TV supports component cables, it'll handle 480p.

Enhanced Definition TV. It's not real HD, but it displays the image in a 16:9 ratio as oppposed to the 4:3 ratio on a normal TV.

The red cable is the right audio channel. Some older TVs have only input slots for an image and sound cable. This results in worse audio quality.

Does it have a Scart input slot on the back? ( http://www.geizkragen.de/img/150/84659.jpg )
Or does it have only the slots to connect the a yellow and white cable? ( http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/intech/lab/images/3input.jpg minus the red one)

I honestly didn't know they still sold the ones with JUST the latter ones...unless your TV has Mono sound.

480i - 480 lines interlaced (which means it draws 240 lines per frame (drawing line 1,3,5,7 etc.) and in the next run the 240 lines missing (2,4,6,8 etc.))

480p - 480 lines progressive (it draws 480 lines in every frame).

What's the visual difference: Basically movement looks a lot smoother in 480p compared to 480i and the picture seems more "solid"/"calm".

i need some help with my tv, all of you AV people. i just got a $300 tv for my room that has a spot for component cables and widescreen(making it an EDTV). if i go and buy component cables for it, will games look notably better in 480p than 480i? is it worth the price of the cables for the difference in quality?

There's a big difference in quality. Especially if it's an LCD. Very noticeable difference.

I'm fairly positive about it. It may not support 720p, but I'm quite sure it'll support 480p.

Even so, do grab one. You'll notice some jaggies more, but it looks much better. Then again, if you're playing at the recommended distance for the size of the screen, you won't notice them THAT much.

480 is how many pixels there are, vertically, on a display.  When you see 480i, that is 480 lines interlaced, which means that a lower amount of energy, or frequency, is used on the display.  The line of pixels is produced in an "odd and even" fashion.  For instance:

1 - first line of pixels displayed across TV
2 - fifth line displayed
3 - second line displayed
4 - sixth line displayed
5 - third line displayed
6 - seventh line displayed
7 - fourth line displayed
8 - eigth line displayed

This is what is used most of the time in standard TV's.

But 480p is 480 lines of pixels progressive.  That is, every line comes right after the other, and shows a better picture, but uses more energy to show a more crisp picture.

1 - first line of pixels displayed
2 - second line of pixels displayed
3 - third line...
4 - fourth line...

Of course, all of this happens faster than we can see and shows us a "moving picture".

Yeah, they are basically 480p tubes. They are usually pretty cheap and pretty good quality. If you really dont want HDTV but want a good cheap TV, you really should get EDTV over SDTV. Besides, tubes still have better contrast over most flatpanal tvs ;)

Quote from truth. yes. the component cables just allow you to run the game in 480p. it just makes the game a little crisper and the textures are less blurry. entirely worth it IMO.

Naw, I just didn't have my post posted before others replyed, weirdo. :P So what if you got the TV a year ago, you basicly wasted 100$ on a outdated TV (Mono TVs is from pre 1995 before Stereo ones became more mainstream) that the store was probably trying to junk off on someone as quick as they could, sorry but the term I used is just what that TV is.

Naw, Component doesn't mean 480P or higher always. Every Color TV is capable of using Component&RGB signals but they don't all have the proper Inputs. Most SDTVs in the past 6yrs or so usually have Component now, unless they are bargin "junk" TVs.
