I've never played a Final Fantasy game, but I'd like to. Which would be the best for a beginner? Does it matter if I don't plan on using the multiplayer (only a couple of my friends have the DS and none play FF)? I've looked at the game recommendation thread but it's kind of hard to tell just from that which would be best for someone new to the series.

I would like to know this also (which Final fantasy game on DS would be good for a final fantasy first timer, or just which one is the best)

Well the thing is most of them are different genre's. You have:

Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales, which is more of a minigame and card battles, but it's very fun and is pretty easy.

Final fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate, this one is my favorite, but it's not the traditional RPG it's more of a hack and slash one but great fun

Final Fantasy Tactics A2, this is a Turn based strategy game, it's also pretty fun and for the most part pretty easy

Final Fantasy III & IV, these are the main series of games, and have the traditional Final Fantasy formula. But there harder.

I had actually looked at this one, but I've heard there's pretty much no point if you're only doing single player (which I would be). Thanks for your input!

I did single player and loved it, the original was more multiplayer oriented. But this one is fine for single player.

For a beginner FF IV is the most straight forward one (I mean you don't have to worry about jobs, and which sidequest to do first) most traditionnal one (traditionnal RPG like the big ones following it, VI VII, X etc.). It has a great story and easy gameplay. But it can a bit difficult if you try to go too fast within taking time to level up. But personnally, it's the first one I ever played (on the SNES) and it hooked me forever to the Final Fantasy franchise.

You might want to try the ones on the GBA too, they are all pretty much easier. FF I & II on GBA is one of the easiest, but can become a bit monotonous with the frequent random fights a turn-based fighting. The FF IV, V and VI remakes on GBA are also a very good bet if you can find them cheap (FF IV GBA is also apparently much easier than the DS version). FF VI has one of the best storyline and the best variety of characters and abilities, you'll have a lot of fun with it, but it's more complicated than IV.

Conclusion: Probably Final Fantasy IV or VI would be the best to start.

The best one for beginners would be Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The ring of fates. Because theres not really that much to worry about, you just kinda fight your way through dugeons. And it is fine with single player, I never played multi-player at all and loved the game.

Final Fantast III and IV and really good as well, but they do get hard, meaning gridining.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, which is my favorite, is a tactics style game.

Final Fantasy Fables is a mixture if card battleing and mini games, aslo very easy.

Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wing is a Real time stragity game, also very easy.

I would reccoment Ring of Fates to a begginer, but I like them all.

a best for a beginner. They don't take a lot of skill. You just need to level up and make your own strategy.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate would be the good choice to start off with.

Chocobo Tales is too geared towards to 12 and under crowd (opinion stated), Final Fantasy III is a hard title and Final Fantasy IV is a remake with a ramped up difficulty level.

Tactics Advance 2 is more strategy turn based (like chess) and to be honest I've never liked the laws in the game which you have to obey. So I never really cared for that.

I would start off with Rings of Fate then venture off and try other things.

The only thing is that Ring Of Fate is not a really good example of what the Final Fantasy franchise principally is, since it's not a real Turn-Based RPG, which doesn't mean it's bad.

So if you just want a fun and easy game with Final Fantasy in its name go for FF CC : Ring Of Fates, but if you want a real overview of what Final Fantasy is, go for one of the Turn Based one (FF I-VI). It depends what you're really looking after.

I reccomend that you put your GBA slot to good use, and go pick up a copy of Final Fantasy VI, as it's one of the best overall, one of the easiest, and even with a port of the original SNES version on a GBA cart, it still stands out as being one of the best old ones graphically. Don't count it out of the picture just because it hasn't been remade for the DS in 3d.... yet! Keep your fingers crossed, with the success of FFIII and FFIV, it should only be a matter of time before it's announced!

I'd actually recommend Final Fantasy VI Advance if you looking to try the main series.

It'll give you a good feel for the series and it's not as hard as IV.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 (FFTA2) would be my choice for you. There's a lot to do in the game, but you don't have everything from the start, so you don't feel overwhelmed. It's battle system is easy to understand and they teach you what a lot of it means in the beginning of the game.

Also try Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. It's an easy-to-understand hack and slash with a good storyline. They teach you what to do as you go through the game. It's great single-player, but I haven't tried Multiplayer so I can't say.

To me, final fantasy rings of fates will be more suitable as the game is more on roaming than turn-based. Games like final fantasy 3 & 4 are turn-based often is more for hard-core players which had been suited to play these kind of gmaes. Or perhaps you could try Final fantasy tactics A2: Grimoire of the rift as it is also more roaming and fairly easy.

Thanks for all the input! I myself am probably going to pick up Ring of Fates at some point, and then delve into the more traditional games after that.

Um, I'd say tyour best bet is to get Final Fantasy III or Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Rings of Fate. Final Fantasy IV seems like it would frustrate a new Final Fantasy player, unless you like bosses (and some enemies) that are over-powered. Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced 2 is a good one if you like strategy, but it's not the best for beginning Final Fantasy players either.

I think you'll be set with Final Fantasy IV. I first played Final Fantasy II on the SNES when it was brand new and I was hooked! The game is not as tough as it might seem. Just make sure you level up a lot by fighting. Check out the Strategy Guide too and that should help you a lot.

When you're done with it, give Final Fantasy III a shot. If you look to expand beyond the DS, Final Fantasy X and XII are great. If you go for XII, then you'll want to follow up with Final Fantasy XII: Revenant WIngs for the DS. It's AWESOME! Check out my profile for a few DS Final Fantasy reviews. I go pretty in-depth.
