Rare was meeting with Microsoft behind Nintendo's back for years. Nintendo thought what they had with Rare was special, they thought they were in love. When Nintendo found out they were infuriated with Rare and their lies. Nintendo hasn't been the same since.Master_Saibot
Tangents like this are why I believe in the internet.

It's also whats scary about the internet :PNintendo decided to part ways with a developer that was quickly going downhill.
Don't expect Banjo to come out on the VC.
They sold them for far more then they were worth(and thats clearly been shown with every game they have produced thus far).
Buying up Retro and securing Intelligent Systems easily made up for Rare leaving, both have produced some great stand out games(Metroid Prime, Paper Mario, Fire Emblems), while Rare, hasn't done anything on the calibur of Metroid Prime since they left.

Holy crap, I'm not even going to correct the wrong posts in here or I wont be eating breakfast for like 2 hours lol
Here's the deal....
Rare saw the way the business side of the development process was moving and knew that it could have potential suitors.
Rare offered Nintendo 2 choices
Now Nintendo saw what Rare was producing and nothing they were doing was better then what Nintendo was already doing and could do in the future. Instead of adding Rare to the Nintendo ranks they sold back their shares and allowed Rare to combine with another company (Microsoft)
The terms of the deal were that Nintendo gets to keep all games that feature their original characters and Rare would get to keep all games that featured their original characters. Mind you that's what happens when it comes to things they own singularly.
^ Good Lord JaysonGuy, that is very wrong. Nintendo only ever owned 49% of the company with 51% in the hands of the company founders. The founders sold out their stock to Microsoft and after that Nintendo gave up the rest for a very large portion of money. Even if they decided to keep the 49% Microsoft would still be the majority owner which would have been one of their reasons for giving them up. There were no backroom deals going on between Nintendo and Rare, at least nothing that was publicly spoken about. Rare was talking mostly to Microsoft and Activision (now ActiBlizzard or whatever they hell they are). If you can find me any kind of proof to your outrageous statements of "deals" between Nintendo and Rare I would love to see them.
Case in point, Microsoft bought the majority of the company, Nintendo sold them the remainders at a later date. Now Rare makes X360 and NDS games instead of Wii and NDS games.

No, you're very wrong
The shares were all back in Rare's hands before it was sold to Microsoft.
That's not even a special case, that's just basic business.

Yeah, all Rare made since N64 that could have been good was Perfect Dark Zero, and now Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts but it's not looking too good.Star Fox Adventures was good.
I still back up my own theoryHERE'S THE WHOLE STORY
"We sold our position back to Rare and then they sold the entire company to Microsoft," said George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications for Nintendo of America.

I disagree. If they had stuck with Nintendo we probably would have seen different games entirely. Even better ones than what Rare have done lately perhaps.
Rare still make good games anyway, they're just not magical like they used to be.
I remember someone once described it as "Nintendo sawing off a decaying limb". Sounds about right, the only worthwhile thing that they've done since joining Microsoft was Viva Pinata. Everything else just seems like they lost focus.jmangafan
How do you mean "worthwhile"? They still make good games. Losing good games for a system doesn't sound like sawing off a decaying limb. It sounds more like sawing off a perfectly healthy limb.

Not compared to what Nintendo can offer themselves.
If you put a Rare team and a Nintendo team on the same game a Nintendo team would have the better product 10 out 10 times.
It's not worth the money to a company to hire someone to do something that they can do better themselves

I remember this very well and I have to agree with Jasonguy. Nintendo didn't see great profits coming from Rare and so they decided to cut ties. Although Rare made great games, most of the games were Nintendo franchise wanna-be's. Once Rare became an independent studio Microsoft gobbled them up!
I think the majority of gamers who lived through this experience would agree with Jasonguy.

With that logic, Nintendo might as well give any companies under their wing the boot 'cause they make almost all the decent games on Wii.
The story from rareware.com:
Again, in 2002, only one title was released: the long-awaited Star Fox Adventures for Nintendo's new GameCube system. However, there was a much bigger Rare story in the wind this year, as rumours of the company's buyout flew thick and fast until their clarification and confirmation at Microsoft's September X02 event in Seville, Spain, where it was confirmed that Rare had officially become part of Microsoft Game Studios. From this point on, the company would be bringing its development talent to bear on the Xbox range of consoles.
This was a drastic change for Rare, and the period following the acquisition was turbulent as teams faced up to the process of creating and converting properties for a brand new system. The first title to be ready for launch was the Banjo team's haunted house romp Grabbed by the Ghoulies, released under the MGS label in late 2003.

You forgot about the part were Nintendo attempted to kill Rare by locking Rare in the trunk of a car and pushing it into a lake.

Banjo isn't out, don't pass judgement like you've played it. And Viva Pinata was an absolulty fantastic game.

No, all the 2nd party developers that Nintendo currently has are all better than the current Rare. You have to get the old Rare out your head. Many of the people from the old Rare left.
What have they created for both the Xbox and Xbox 360? A Conker port, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, and Viva Pinata. Compare this just to what they produced for the N64. The old Rare is dead.

I'd love to see what you'd be saying if the shoe was on the other foot and Nintendo still owned the Rare. All the games you listed are good games.

I think Rare makes great games. I just wish they'd let their creativity loose (assuming MS is giving them loads of money and creative freedom).

Then help me understand what you meant by "I just wish they'd let their creativity loose."

Agreed, and witht he amount of money Microsoft threw at nintendo for Rare it was worth it.
My god, the ignorance is flooding this thread. Viva Pinata is a platinum game. It has sold over a million copies.

Nintendo can outdo Rare
You don't think Nintendo could have made a better game then Rare? If Viva was done by Nintendo it would do just as well or better.
It doesn't do any good to add a company that does what you do except worse.

No, you missed the point, nice job reading the quotes in my post. They said they haven't been very use-full since Microsoft's purchase of them. That's not true. And Nintendo wouldn't have done a better job on Viva Pinata. It would have been much, much simpler and easier.

They haven't been worth the investment. They've made a couple of good games in 6 years with Microsoft. During the N64 era they made a AAA title almost every year.
I would be shocked if Microsoft made a profit off the acquisition of Rare.
