I remember when they used to try and put time into the games that they based off of movies that actually had plots and goals to achieve. Anyone remember the old aladdin game for SNES? Pretty well laid out levels testing different techniques throughout the game , not to mention difficult bosses. Yeah that game was good.

I always thought The Lion King was a decent game back then. In my opinion, the real problem with movie games these days is that most developers are on such tough time constraints, that a lot of potential effort is lost in the process. It's too bad, some movies would make for excellent games if they were done right.

Developers figured out that impressionable people will buy a movie-based game based on the strength of the license alone, so they don't see any reason to spend the time and money to make a good game.

The only AWESOME movie based game I've played is GoldenEye for the N64. All other movie-based games tend to be mediocre at best.

thanks for the memory, aladdin was a great platformer.

u can also add the super star wars games to list of great movie license games.

the only recent movie games that i thought were halfway decent, was that jrpg based on the lord of the rings movies for ps2 LOTR:Third Age. It wasn't anything new, but was a solid jrpg.

There are exceptions to the rule, like Aladdin. But from what I remember, they've pretty much always been bad.

I also agree with this statement. Why waste your time making it good if it is going to sell anyways?

EDIT: But, for $20 during Christmas, I got my 4 year old the Wii 'Cars' game and it isn't a simulation racer by any means, but it could have been a lot worse. It's plenty long and has a lot of different modes. I'm not saying everyone needs to buy it or anything, but for those that like 'Cars' I thought it was actually done rather well.

Battle for Naboo was really good also. It was another N64 game in the Rogue Squadron mold.

The lord of the ring games for GC weren't bad, enter the matrix was pretty good, but i would have to say the Goldeneye was one of the best ever.

rogue squad 3: rebel stike was the best, 1 player was better then the others, but you could co-op the entire 2nd game, which was really go

that and less skilled developers take the projects on, and they try to have the game out, when the movie is released, puttting a time constraint on the developers

I'll have to agree that most movie tie-in's aren't that great. Star Wars Episode I and III weren't really outstanding offerings (Super Return of the Jedi was awesome though!). Generally, and especially these days, they just pump games out to launch in synch with the movie releases and ride that momentum.

Star Wars has had some great spin-off games (Think TIE Fighter!!!, all the Jedi Knight games, Knights of the Old Republic, etc...) but it's had it's fair share of stinkers as well (Force Commander anyone? I tried so hard to like that game).

But as far as games that follow a movie's plot, only Goldeneye stands out as being really great. I did however really enjoy the Aladdin & Lion King games as well, but I'm not sure anything will touch the quality of James Bond on N64.

Agreed, Aladdin, Star Wars, and Lion King were of yester-year in a matter of speaking. I don't remember many critically acclaimed movie based video games by reviewers and user alike of recent times except for Spider-Man 2 and The Chronicles Of Riddick. Other than that ppl just push out mindless dribble on a every platform scale so a parent that doesn't know any better will go out and buy Alvin and the Chipmunks for their child.

Yeah, out of hundreds of games based on movies, there's been a dozen or so worth playing.
