When I was a kid there were only a few virtual reality games, but now the Nintendo Wii has been created. But what I noticed is that with all the Blu-ray and HD TV, and 1080 resolutions...none of the video game companies have created 3-D games. (When I say #D I mean wearing those special shades that makes the movie appear real). Why aren't there any games that are in 3-D?

You can do this on the PC. I think it takes a special video card, but provided the game is supported (and it's based on how much of the graphics are rendered on the card) it can make any game 3D. Article about 3-DNVIDIA site

Ya, 3D games were at GDC.

On the last IGN Game Scoop (114) they talk about playing 3D versions of Gran Turismo and Motorstorm at Sony's area at GDC with the fancy glasses.

Good 3D glasses aren't cheap. And cheap ones not only aren't that great, but basically discriminate against those of use who where glasses. Another problem is that good 3D needs a very high refresh rate. Most TVs can't handle it. However there are some "3D ready" displays hitting the market now. Not only that but autostereoscopic displays... that is ones that can display in 3D without the need for headgear... do not seem that far away.

Not 3D graphics, he's talking about where the characters look like they are coming out of the screen.

He means stereoscopic.

Stereoscopic? What does that mean? Games take place in a 3D space, so they ARE 3D.

Unless you're missing one of your eyes, you should be able to sense how close or far things are from you. This is called Depth Perception. Now a stereoscopic image one that tricks our brains into seeing depth on a flat surface. The illusion is accomplished by providing each eye with a slightly different image.

A conventional TV or monitor projects the same image into each eye. So there is no illusion of depth. Even if the game itself takes place in a virtual 3D space.

Heh, well to be honest it's a future we've been expecting since at least the late 80s. But recent tech trends suggest that this could finally become a practical reality in the next few years.

And then we can look even more like idiots than we already do waggling our wiimotes furiously. Rejoice!

The DSi Warioware game made everyone who played it at GDC look really dumb because it uses a camera and requires you to move around in 3D space.

Stereoscopic 3D gaming has been available on the pc for years.... You can take the cheap route and use shutter glasses, or you can use some true virtual reality stereoscopic 3D glasses, like the z800.... And you don't need a special video card btw.... Almost any nVidia card made in the last 5 years will work...

There was probably a time when jamming buttons on our controllers furiously looked dumb. Though I envision a future where interaction with our games is if anything more natural than now.

But I don't see how stereoscopics could influence this either way. You're still staring at a screen. The only difference is your brain is receiving far more information.

You're right, the technology has been available for ages. It just isn't mainstream. Which means game developers rarely if ever take it into consideration when designing their games.

I'm not a fan of it. I've been to 3D movies like that and didn't feel any different other than sore eyes. I'll think I'll stick to the basic 2D perception.
