I see this term thrown around, especially in regards to Nintendo.  I looked at hard gamers as somebody who plays a lot of video games, but this may be different what a true "Hardcore" gamer is.    Everyday when I fire up the Wii, my daughter tell my wife - kind of like a tattle-tail.  So to my family I am a "Hardcore" gamer.   From all the rants about  Nintendo doesn't care about "Hardcore" gamers, it seems that I may have a different outlook at this type of person.  Are "Hardcore" gamers, people who think they know best for the video game industry and feel they can speak for the rest of gamers?  Do "Hardcore" people only care about graphics?

Is it not just another word for geek?
there's a group of gamers, they influence each other and have statuses regarding their own gaming abilities. They mean nothing outside their own group, but they consider their own abilities to be highly respectable.

I would consider people in such a group to be "hardcore"-gamers, they use their time to play games, and they consider it important and respectable. While the public would see them as "nerds", "freaks" or "geeks".

I see these threads sometimes "how many hours do you play each day?", and some people find it to be very respectable to play several hours each day, bassicly giving your life to gaming. I think that's a geek (aka hardcore-gamer).

or people who compare their scores for long-periods of gaming, those too can be considered hardcore-gamers because they find their doing very respectable and waste a huge amount of time approaching their personal goals in games.

So playing Zelda, probably makes you a temporary geek because you play the game several hours each day.
that's how I see it.

A Hardcore gamer is when they dedicate their time to gaming. One who has played many games and plays em till they find everything in the game. Not that they are losers or geeks, but people who just loves to play videos games.

I think its someone who sees themselves as better and more enlightened than so called casuals, who know more about games, spend more time and money on them and are generally better at them.

But your defination seems to be a little too broad of what other people think. I love playing video games, and probably played video games 80% longer than people currently visiting this board so your definition seems to apply to me.  (I played back in the Atari 2600 and Intellivision days).  I will admit I am a geek when it comes to Video Games, so I don't have an issue about Hardcore=geek.  Let's take Sonic for the Wii for example, it has a lot of challenge and depth but seems to dismissed by people who claimed to be "Hardcore"  So there has to be something that makes they feel different.  So does that mean to be "Hardcore" you must only play realistic looking such as Gears of Wars?  How can somebody say they are "Hardcore" and discount the games currently available for the Wii?

I see it as a person who loves any kind of gaming and enjoys it very much. Kinda of like a hobby you enjoy a lot. Like soccer. You can still be hardcore and have a life too. There's nothing wrong with enjoying them a lot anyway.

Hardcore differs with people. There is no real definition for it. It's what you think of it. Just enjoy games and forget about what others think :)

I wanted to ask this question in this forum after reading that "hardcore" post but you beat me to it.

Being around the PC for a long time, I know that the Hardcore Gamer is the one that always spends the big money (and I mean a lot) to buy the latest and greatest hardware. They want to maximize the full potential availible without any compromise.

As far as Hardcore Gamer for the Wii, I do not know how to put it into words. I guess its people who play a lot of titles, follow up on future releases, news + magazines, watch every trailers, and remain loyal to whatever move Nintendo makes.

I am for sure not a hardcore gamer, I am probably not even a gamer compared to lots of people here. I want to hear a lot of opinions about what a Hardcore player is.

Yah i spend most of my time playing games, i've played 16 Wii games and beat almost all of them. And I dont think the Wii is meant for "hardcore" gamers, i find my self bored of it, but the VC helps alot. I spend most my time online on the 360. I've been playing video games for years, so i would consider myself "hardcore"

D a n g, you played just about every title out to date. Other than that, how come the Wii is not for hardcore gamers when you believe hardcore gaming is for people who have been playing lots of titles for a long time? I think the Wii will be around for a while.

People who would say "you are hard core only if you play realistic looking games such as GoW must be either 1) missinformed or 2) wrong and have not one clue of the term "hardcore". Personally I call people hardcore gamers who have been in the game for years, such as yourself. Today people tend to think that if you play online or if a gaming company such as Microsoft provides online play to gamers is "hardcore". People bash on the Wii because it hasn't provided any online gaming to the gamers. Doesn't that sound a little overexaggerated? YES.

When all this online play wasn't in existense, people enjoyed video games. The real hardcore gamers were the ones that would buy the games they wanted and wouldn't care if it costed them 50 bucks or so, they just wanted to play that game because they wanted it so bad or it was their favorite, this is why franchises like Mario and Zelda are still here today.

Yeah the online play is great and all don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't consider a guy to just plays GoW or Halo 2 online a "hardcore player", its alot more than that.

Without a doubt the Wii will be around for a long time, its a great system, but its really because its been four months since launch so the titles are limited. Its not that the Wii is for hardcore players its because it just got launched and most games are minigames. Also no online limits the playtime. Pretty much the same with every system launch....

I agree that the title of a hardcore gamer should not be given to people that only play one game. I have been around a ton of cybercafes in the Southern California region throughout this decade. Most people there just play Counter-Strike or Warcraft III and they called themselves hardcore gamers. I found it to be very LAME.

For those that just play Halo, I think the title "Hardcore Halo Player" is better suited than "Hardcore Gamer"

I don't think the term refers at all to how much or often someone plays, but rather what qualities of a game attract the gamer. For example, a grip of people went out and bought a PS2 after GTA3 and Vice City were released; these people may have sat around for hours playing, but it didn't make them understand the video game industry and its history and culture anymore than they did when they first felt the novel fascination with GTA. I think a hardcore gamer wants a quality and memorable game experiance more than improved graphics or any other superficial aspect of a game.

I am curious because you point to the VC helping with adding life to the Wii after beating the current games on the system.  I still consider the games that were released for the Nintendo NES and Genesis to be much harder to beat than the current generation of games for any system.  So are you saying this because the games on the Wii don't seem to be challenging?   The games on the Xbox 360 are no more difficult to beat than the ones on the Wii.  So I think your definition is that the system must have online games to be considered "Hardcore" gaming system.  For example, the time it takes to beat Gears of the War is no longer than the time it takes to beat Red Steel.  The online component adds the additional play time, thus making the system meant for "Hardcore" gamers.

It's too bad that there are only a couple of terms for gamers.  Someone needs to start a hierarchy with status levels.  :)

I think that term hard-core is too broad.  There are some who dedicate more of their time to gaming than others. Although important, time can't be the only justification.

I think a hard-core gamer is anyone who cares enough about a game or a gaming concept to ask questions for their own knowledge.  Usually this person gets intrigued and continues down the path to 'The Dark Side!"

The 'casual' gamer would be someone who probably wouldn't be posting in this forum and if they did, they would probably just need help 'hacking' their console or game because they don't care to know how.

Well okay the VC games are much harder than the current consoles games and the Wii games are easy to beat, but i meant since there isnt so much games on the Wii, i can play the VC games instead. And i meant the online helps the replay value, not that its meant for hardcore players only....

*Ahem*

A Hardcore gamer is usually a gamer who spends his leisure playing video games. Also reading about video games. Hardcore gamers prefer specific types of games that take a significant time to learn. They pride and spend most of thier time mastering these rules or use of a game, which is not really required. They talk in Leet, and where t-shirts that make direct references to video games. In MMORPG's, they usually pick PvP realms. Read this twice. There is often confusion about what a hardcore gamer is.

Thats another common view of a hardcore gamer that I have been hearing. When a person cares so much about a game to research on the mechanics of the game and to learn how to become a pro at it. The only time I ever heard a gamer joining the "Dark Side" is when they choose to buy a Playstation 1/2/3. The only other The Dark Side example I can think of is when a baseball player decides to sign with the New York Yankees.

I am aware of the reasons of why 100+ Million PS2 units were sold even though I never owned one. I should have elaborated on asking why hardcore gamer is entering the "Dark Side" of things (a Star Wars term for the Evil Empire) because the term is vague to me.

Well I see hardcore gamers in the same league as film enthusiasts, and can be branched off into their own preferred genre`s or desired experiences.

Interesting opinion you got there

There is a very clear cut difference between softcore and hardcore pr0n, but the difference between a hardcore gamer and a gamer is not so clear cut

I was refering to being consumed by the gaming industry by its addictive nature.

to me a hardcore gamer is someone who appreciates gaming because they understand the complexities of what goes into games and also what makes them fun...now of course..when someone spends a lot of time playing these games their tastes may start to become even more particular.. to me..a hardcore gamer would be someone who plays games into the ground..someone who knows games backwards and forwards...knows at least some of the exploits and bugs..and also someone who follows the industry heavily to see what is coming up and if it is worthwhile to them
