There ain't much out there. If you're dead-set on having a classic turn-based battle system, Arc Rise Fantasia's pretty much your only choice. If you're willing to go real-time or turn-based strategy, then you could check out: Little King Story, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, FFCC: The Crystal Bearers, or Super Paper Mario (not very rpg-y.)

I think its a mix between a low level classic rpg and action adventure. I thought monster hunter tri was probably one of the better real time rpgs, but not much of a story which is what makes rpgs so great, a good story and lots of choices in gear.....but zelda is old school.

i dont think ninty ever intended Zelda to be an rpg. its all adventuring, platforming, and puzzle-solving. you'll never be able to grind lvls w/ Link.

Zelda is old school like in old school role playing games? No it's not, I take it you didn't play a lot of older RPGs I.E Ultima, Wizardry. Stat progression and customization is what made RPGs great.

Zelda II pretty much was. Every other Zelda is an action RPG though. Zelda does have things in common with RPGs though and that's probably what he meant. For RPGs he's probably better off playing the DS. Since the SNES Nintendo consoles haven't really been known for RPGs.

Its certainly not a dragon age, oblivion, or diablo.....but back in the day it was zelda and castlvania. Mostly because there was options in gameplay like side quests, different equipable weapons and a deeper story than the average game. It certainly set the marker for future games like listed above.

Aside from Zelda 2 (to some extent) I've never considered the Zelda franchise a RPG franchise. The franchise always seemed and played like Action Adventure games that may feature light RPG elements.

That does't make those titles RPGs though. Also back in the day there was so much more than Zelda and Castlevania. There were actually RPGs not action adventure games that contained RPG elements.

Thats my point. Its a mix. A precursor to other games....many of which are modern day rpgs.

Nothing in todays gaming world is clear cut and one genre. If it was just a action adventure game it would be linear, which it's not. Its free roam during most of the series.

Not all Action Adventure games are linear though ,just like not all RPGs have free roaming in them. Also just because that game might feature RPG elements doesn't make it a RPG. By you logic Grand Theft Auto San Andreas would be considered a RPG as well.

Your comparing it by just todays standards.Which is unfair. What about in the 1980s? It's just as much a action adventure as it is a rpg.

If were are going to compare to RPGs that came out in the 80s then it would even come close to being considered a Role playing game even with those light elements lol.

Zelda is not a RPG.

Now, there's Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, the only RPG I've played on Wii.

Ignoring the facts and their relevence makes you wrong if you think zelda is nota rpg. God of war is a action adventure....tomb raider, rayman, mario. Zelda is more than that.

punchacku

You're the only ignoring the facts here though:?. You clearly do not know a RPG or you're just not familar with the genre what so ever. BTW Mario, Rayman are platformers, God of War is a Action (Hack & Slash) game. Once again by your logic GTA San Andreas is also a RPG since it offers free roaming, side quest, and light RPG elements. Also the fact you said compare the Zelda games to RPGs of the 80's clearly pointed out you're not familiar with RPGs from that time. (or what so ever)

Just no, Zelda isn't an RPG, nor Mario is an Action-Adventure game, you have some serious problem with genres definitions.

I guess no ones ever heard of action rpgs before because thats what Zelda is. EDIT: Oh wait yea its not a action rpg or a rpg you all are right its lacking a character stat system and a level up system. EDIT: its a action adventure game with small rpg elements but missing the key elements which make it a rpg.

It has some light RPG elements but that's not enough to call it an RPG. Similar to how it has swordfighting without being a hack and slash, it has shooting (of arrows) without being a shooter, it has puzzles without being a puzzle game, etc. A game like this with many different types of gameplay are generally called action adventure.

I have no clue bro im not even gonna try to act like i know. I just play games is all i know and i only own a wii console. Monster hunter is a great game no matter what genre it is and im happy to have it on the wii. I thought the new rabbids game was like rabbids go home and it a party game shows how much i follow. Thats just a + for gamespot wii forums as i would have bought the game then thrown it out the window for it being a party game. Edit: and another thing moving crap in a signature gets annoying to look at every time. EDIT: Conduit 2 is a FPS game *Pats himself on the back*.

simply. there isnt enough rpg elements to make this a stand out rpg title on the wii. no XP to gain, no character customization, nothing like that. only rupees, bombs, the master sword, and arrows. and that combination is stellar!

I dunno if I would classify Zelda as an RPG so much as an Action-Adventure game. If you're looking for good RPGs, I would go with the 360-- Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Final Fantasy XIII are all good. I've also heard Lost Odyssey and Star Ocean: The Last Hope are good.

I have always been under the impression that turn based combat was more for "Strategy Games" not role playing. I think rpgs are about being immersed in deep world with some options but also a great story where you really feel like the character. For instance in most zelda games he his not named link but the hero of legend among the other characters. Just b/c it doesn't have stats and it is not turn based combat does not mean it can't be a action adventure "rpg". The term is not reserved only for certain games to which you approve of but is used to correctly categorize the details of a video games plot line, game play, and presentation. Some of which are most definitely rpg elements, not strategy, and not action adventure. Rpg.

i think the term RPG has a different meaning in the gaming world, or else all games would be considered RPGs, as in all games you control (role-play) a character. and RPG games are/were turn based because of how the real thing works: in turns. roll the dice, the bigger initiative attacks first, followed by the second, third and so on.

Well i tell you that the english used to describe such games inaccurate. lol Because nothing about taking turns says role playing in anyway, unless you have played dungens and dragons back in the day. What about the conversation and searching involved in finding side missions and most of the important items. It's certainly not straight forward like a general action adventure.
