I want to get into RPGs because most of them look fun, but they all look so similar that I wouldn't be able to tell a good one from a bad one.
What about DS too?

The Wii's best RPG's are not it's own sadly. The Wii has yet to build up a good RPG library. We've got Fragile, Monster Hunter 3, Arc Rise Fantasia and the new Tales game to look forward to though. Also, we're getting the all-important Dragon Quest X.
The DS has tons of RPGs. The best one is Chrono Trigger in my opinion. I've only played it on the DS; so no nostalgia here. It's easily one of the best games I've ever played. Other great RPGs for the DS are Final Fantasy IV, The World Ends With You, Dragon Quest IV and V, and the promising Dragon Quest IX. I'd put the Etrian Odyssey games up there as well, but those games are not for everybody.
Should I even bother with the new Tales of Symphonia if I never played the first one? Or should I try to get my hands on a copy of the gc tales of symphonia first?
Also, Fire Emblem looks interesting to me, since I loved final fantasy tactics. Is fire emblem similar to FFT at all, and is Fire Emblem worth getting?
Fire Emblem is an SRPG like FFT, but is very different. If you've played Advance Wars before, it's kind of like that.
And definitely get the first Tales of Symphonia. Playing it before the second will increase your appreciation for the sequel, and Tales of Symphonia by itself is just excellent.

Track down the first game if you can, but it doesn't really matter.
I actually played the second game before the first and it didn't alter the experience at all.
Playing the first one might first might help appreciate the second though, just because the first game doesn't have a few things the second game does.

I personally thought my experience of the second game was improved through my knowledge of what happened in the first game, but the second is definitely perfectly understandable and enjoyable without having played the first. Neither of the main characters in ToS2 appeared in ToS1.
^ Well, that's up to opinion.
When people say the Wii is lacking "hardcore games" they usually mean mainstream "hardcore games", which is true.
Razmitaz
The wii should have hundreds action, fpses and RPG's because of how the controls are for it. Yet we only have like five from each of those catagories.

And?
Maybe you don't like what's being offered so far, and I can understand that. My brother feels the same way.
But to me, the Wii already has me satisfied. We've got tons of great games on Virtual Console, great first party titles, and some nice third party efforts. I'm fine right now
It's up to your opinion whether we have enough hardcore titles or not.

So yeah, play the first first. :P
the story is horrible and the overall experience is extremely shallowi'd say download paper mario and super mario rpglucifer3999
But I thought you're wanting him to avoid shallow?
Mario RPG isn't even in the top 5 RPGs on the Virtual Console.
Recommending that over RPGs like Secret of Mana, Phantasy Star IV, and Shining Force II just seems silly.
Before this thread derails...the best RPG on Wii hasn't even been discussed because most people never consider it an RPG.
MLB Power Pros 2008, only in reality the American version is two leagues (I am keeping the wording even if the pun was horrible) less valuable than the Japanese version due to everything Take Two takes out of it for, um, Americanism or something lazy like that.
And it is obviously Tactics Ogre on VC, something we got on the PS1 in America but Japan got on the SNES as well.

Woah buddy, you stepped into a whole new ballpark when you mentioned satisfaction. I never said i wasn't satisfied with the Wii, doesn't take much to do so. All i really am saying is that the Wii's library is lacking in pretty much every hardcore catagory. As wii gamers we can't even deny out of all 3 consoles it has the weakest library of games. Before this thread derails...the best RPG on Wii hasn't even been discussed because most people never consider it an RPG.

Someone new to the genre asking for a great RPG isn't likely looking for a baseball game.
And Tactics Ogre hasn't been released on the Virtual Console in North America or Europe, so there's a good chance this doesn't help the TC.

I went into the "satisfaction" area because you sounded disappointed in the Wii's current library. The Wii is lacking in some areas for sure, but there is definitely a bunch of "hardcore" titles out there; albeit, hard to find. There isn't a solid definition for a "hardcore game," so everyone has different perceptions of this. Your idea of a "hardcore game" may be different from mine, which is probably why our numbers are so different. So again, it's still up to opinion. I personally prefer my Wii to my Xbox 360. The games on the Wii just appeal to me more.
Defining Hardcore is definitely tough to define. But we as gamers know a casual and hardcore game when we see one.

Anyways, to post something on topic, i recomend Paper mario assuming you havn't played it yet.

To answer all 4 of your questions quickly. No yes (then play 2) Somewhat yes[QUOTE="lucifer3999"] the story is horrible and the overall experience is extremely shallow

are you going to tell me that super mario rpg is a crappy rpg?
i never recommended it over secret of mana and etc. i just didn't feel like listing all the classic rpgs from other consoles because i already know that the snes and n64 have good rpgs.
the wii doesn't
if he wants great rpgs on his wii hes going to have to download them for VC and both of the rpgs i've listed are critically acclaimed..so whats the problem?
I want to get into RPGs because most of them look fun, but they all look so similar that I wouldn't be able to tell a good one from a bad one.

There are no good RPG's on the Wii right now. Valhalla Knights looks prommising but it doesn't have a release date yet. Numen could be OK, but I'm not convinced. Monster Hunter 3 looks like it could be a blast but it's not a typical RPG.Unfortunetly, I'll have to agree that the Wii is rather lacking in RPGs as of the moment. There is Taless of Symphonia 2, which I have played...but then I played the first and was utterly dissapointed when I compared it to modern RPGs (Oblivion, Tales of Symphonia 2, Knights of the Old Republic 2 etc). Granted they're very different from eachother...but I could never get into the story.....either because it was predictable or flat out boring. I was never "Into" the game like I was with more modern RPGs. I had no desire to finish or even progress with the game. Rather, the calls of my angry girlfriend (of whom we traded games with, My Oblivion for her Tales in which I felt ripped off) forced me to finish the drab experience that was Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube.
And yes, I am expecting to be hated for giving my opinion on a critically acclaimed game that's loved by many. It didn't suit my tastes.

Actually some of the best RPGs ever developed are on the Wii - via the Virtual Console - so that statement is far from the truth.
That's not counting retail games which have had a positive reception, ie. Chocobo's Dungeon, Tales of Symphonia, Super Paper Mario, and Dokapon Kingdom.
[QUOTE="lucifer3999"]are you going to tell me that super mario rpg is a crappy rpg?
GabuEx
It's not a crappy RPG, but its strengths are certainly not its story and its deep experience, two things you listed as strikes against Tales of Symphonia 2.
the thing is, tales of symphonia 2 didn't really have anything remarkable that could of made it a great rpg. i merely stated two things i thought it lacked.
i recommended paper mario and smrpg because they are both better rpgs (and a better deal at around $10 each compared to a $40 wii game) than ToS2

lucifer3999
I know; I'm just saying, it would make more sense to critique it for the things that actually set it apart from the things you recommend, rather than critiquing it for something that the game you recommend also possesses. :P

Different strokes for different folks I guess, but RPG's on the PC were better in the 90's than what the Wii has available today. The games you listed aren't really RPG's anyway. Give me old school Might and Magic and Guild Wars!!![QUOTE="psychobrew"]The games you listed aren't really RPG's anyway.GabuEx
How are they not RPGs, especially Tales of Symphonia?
Linearity, character development, hand holding (according to reviews), not to mention the anime and the dependence on cut scenes. So called JRPG's simply aren't real RPG's, at least not in the traditional sense. It's a style of game I will never be able to get in to, and I love RPG's.Linearity, character development, hand holding (according to reviews), not to mention the anime and the dependence on cut scenes. That seems like an awfully narrow definition of "RPG". What genre would they fall into, if not RPG?

Not really, at least if you look at how the genre started in the first place (programmers pretty much taking the physical role playing game Dungeons and Dragons and putting it on a computer). I guess JRPG's would be concidered a sub genre, but most people who are looking for an RPG are looking for that Dungeons and Dragons experience that started the genre in the first place. In that reguard, there are no true to form RPG's on the Wii. I hadn't even heard the term "JRPG" until I got the Wii for Christmas and started looking for an RPG for it. I have tried a few, but they left me dissapointed. Please Log In to post.
