What is the range on the Wiimote?

What is the range on the Wiimote? I have two and they both seem to have a very limited range for moving the little hand in the menus. I am talking about 8 feet max. Is this normal and how far away do you sit when you use the Wii? I noticed that the range is actually longer when I am playing an actual game like Wii Sports Tennis, but then when I click to use the menu I have to move back closer again.

When using the pointer, the IR signal can easily be drowned out by overhead lights, especially florescent.

Ive noticed this at my dads, but turn off the light, and as long as there is no other interference, I've sat 20 feet away from the tv and it worked fine.

The reason for this is because when you're playing Tennis, all you're just using is the accelerometer data, which is transmitted to the console through BlueTooth radio (range ~20-30'). When in the menus however, you're using the pointer, which is basically a little IR "camera" on the top of the Wiimote that tracks the IR signal coming off of the sensor bar (range varies depending on how well it can distinguish this signal).

Are you serious? I've gotten mine to work around 100 feet away or more. I was outside and was hitting my tv through the window. Was able to turn on wii sports and play tennis......but that wasn't practicle though, it was almost impossible to select stuff.

With the standard ir sensor sent with the unit best range is 3 to 15 feet

I use it around 18

the wireless 9v battery replacement sold in stores says 25

basically dark rooms with no light sources except tv should be more because the sensor

bar is made of 7 irleds

oh yea and smoking in the room can diminish the signal also
