I just bought a wii and I heard about wii updates.

Can you tell me if they are necessary or not and what are they for?

Some wii updates are used to get new channels that come out.

yes they are, or Nintendo will lock your system until you do.

connect your ii to the internet and it will start to update.

Read the manual you have to update if you want new channels or to use certain features such as the SD card slot.
