Dragon Quest IX is fast becoming my favorite DS game to date because it's so deep and non-linear. Once you get a certain piece of equipment, you can roam freely and explore the world as you see fit. There are secrets all over the place, tons of weapons, armor, and accessories to mix and match and make.
The battle system hasn't been re-invented, but it is streamlined and easy to use with good functionality, and the ai (at least so far) has been very smart and productive when you set them up to fight strategically on their own, or you can control them manually when you need to.
The only thing I'm not fond of in the game is that if you're playing the game solo, your companions are just generated party members you can make, but they have no personalities and never speak. Even so, the world is full of stories and interesting characters.
