I just bought a DS myself, and had the same query. After hours of searching and polling, I have came up with this comprehensive list of the "Must Own" games for the Nintendo DS:
5: Hotel Dusk: Room 215: A great game, and a rare one. If you wait any longer to buy this, you will have a tough time finding it and it will be very expensive. For this reason, it is a must own.
4: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: A great and quirky game that is very innovative. This game gave us the best adventure game in years, and everyone is guarnteed to love it, even if they do find it a bit novel.
3: Final Fantasy III: This remake by Square is as fun of a time as you need to have on the DS. It's time consuming and all encompasing.
2. There are diverging options here, depening on what type of gamer you are:
A. Strategic story based gamers will want to purchase Advance Wars: Duel Strike. This game is rare, as well as deep and excellent. It is quite an impressive achievement in depth for a handheld device, and you will get months of fun out of this one.
B. Action gamers should purchase Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow a hybrid action/rpg is less story focused, but all about ghoul killing action. It really needs no introduction.
1. Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass: No game can equal the use of the touch screen like this recent entry into the DS library. It's Zelda, with new innovative technology. What else can you ask for?
Some really great runners up are: Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, Brain Age, the Poke'mon RPGs, Yoshi's Island, Elite Beat Agents, and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
In order:
1. Advance Wars(it got me to purchase Advance Wars 2 and Battalion Wars)
2. Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow(it got me to buy Portrait of Ruin, which I just bought and will play soon)
3. Mario Kart DS(the best Mario Kart for single player)
4. Mario and Luigi Partners in Time(easier than the 1st one, but still really fun)
5. Yoshi's Island(I'm still working on it, but it's very similar to Yoshi's Island on GBA, which is a good thing)
Final Fantasy III
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Kirby: Canvas Curse
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Lost in Blue
1. Metroid Prime Hunters
2. Super Mario 64 DS
3. Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
4. Transformers: Decepticons
5. Metroid Prime Pinball
My "current Top 5" at least the ones I'm playing
1. Zelda Phantom Hourglass
2. Mario Kart
3. Elite Beat Agents (1 to 2 hours a month)
4. New Super Maio Bros. (trying to get all of the 3 largecoins in each level)
5. Pokemon Diamond (stagnant, got bored with it after 15 or so hours)
zelda, pixcross, both castlevania and chocobotales
