Hey folks,

For those of you who rank the DS as the greatest or one of the greatest handhelds/consoles of all time, I am curious to know why? I have one and quite a few of the top notch games and while I find them great, I don't see what the fuss is all about, personally. What stands out for you that causes you to be so fond of the little device?

two words: touch screen. it's amazing. it makes FPS games possible on a handheld, unlike the PSP's sissy little circle thing.

Nintendo made some great games based on their best franchises like Mario, Star Fox, and Metroid.  Online Wi-FI play has helped psh sales too.

The first handheld to have touch screen, great games, old classics remade with better gameplays and etc, the only problem is that they don't fix hackers and such on the wifi. But still, everything else easily makes it great.

The DS is easy to carry around, and I personally prefer the 2d games because they remind me of the 16-bit era. I could play 2d games forever. :)

totally, games combining 2d and 3d graphics (2.5d) are fantastic like sonic rush and new super mario bros.

The touch screen, Internet capability, wifi connection, pictochat, single card multi-player, backwards gba compatibility, and most importantly: the games. Did I miss any?

I love it because it is fun to play, and it has a good balance of 2d and 3d games and a good balance of causal and hardcore games, also bringing back plenty of the old school, also has online. This could be the last official system where they will have a good amount of 2D games available.

Well my lite is a bit smaller than my PSP, which makes it easier to pack.

I also love that it's backwards compatible (since I never owned a GBA).

Oh and the touch screen is a lot more responsive than that darned nub.

DS homebrew on a PSP? Now that my friend is funny. If you are talking about the the concept by the creator of PSP Youtube? Sorry, it will never happen. What are you going to do for touch screen? Nothing.

The DS has great games. It presents you with an entirely new way to play games.

When you buy a good DS game, you are hooked on it. Puzzle Quest, Picross, and Zelda are the only games i have played in the last few months. You get consumed by it.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha this is funny, the DS is surely not the best console ever and is not even the greatest handheld of all time either. The psp is. The psp will soon be able to run DS homebrew.awptimistic

I've seen this a lot lately. What happens is the PSP owners(both of them) get on these forums and overstate the quality of their console, to try to bring the general concensus to the point where the PSP is even considered a competitor to the DS.

They have been spewing it for so long, that actually, they start to forget the big picture. Let me enlighting you:

If the DS isn't the best handheld then comparitively, the PSP is the worst. The PSP is SO far behind the DS in terms of sales, quality games, user base, and durability, that even comparing the two systems is laughable to the knowledgable consumer. They are not even in the same ballpark. It's like comparing apples and a big pile of crap.

When people have PSPs in public, why don't they get embarassed like people do when their friends find out they own a PS3?

Your system is garbage, you wasted your money, you hate playing it, and probably listen to MP3s to justify its expense. The DS being the best system ever, or only a really good one, won't change that one bit. The only joy you can get out of the PSP is by finding ways to hotwire it, to be able to play old Nintendo games, which even you admit, are far better than any new games available on the PSP.

So get over to the PSP forums if your upset about your purchase and let them comfort you with tales of the fun they have had with the system. GTFO out of these forums, however.

Feeling the need to put someone elses purchase in a bad light, because you are insecure about your own is a sign of immaturity, as I'm sure your young, but if your not, it's a sign of a much deeper issue, and I don't think you can ever fix it my friend, so for your sake, I hope your just immature.

See ya around the forums.

Please check my profile and see if your so called greatest hand-held could do my kind of thing.

You said soon? I think never. Also this topic is growing dangerously close to the board rules limit.

What made the DS so great? The touch screen made playing a lot of fun.

Thats probably the funniest thing I have ever read in my entire life. You just contradicted yourself...Putting "Feeling the need to put someone else's purchase in bad light," that's what you just did! Anyone that has as much negativity about the PSP has never even touched one. I own both the PSP and DS Lite, and they are awesome system. I own 92 PSP games and 10 DS games. From my own personal likes, the PSP has a much better game library by far, but because of the millions of sales for kids for Christmas gifts or Birthday gifts, the DS will hold strong. I've gone into stores, and about 95% of the games on the DS are geared towards kids (ages 12yrs and younger), while the PSP games are geared towards the 17+ crowd. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean that kids games can't be fun for adults as well, and there is always Brain Age for the older crowd. Really, if it wasn't for Zelda: PH, FFIII, and Mario Kart, I would have wasted my money on the DS...heck, even with those three I wonder if I wasted my money. Even the GBA has a better game lineup than the DS, I even bought a Micro to play them because I'll probably be getting rid of my DS sooner than later.

I just hope you're older than than your level, because you were just as immature as the other poster.. I could care less how I came off on the other hand...I just love defending the system that I know is better, and in my case, its the PSP. And you're idea about how people enjoy their PSPs is way off...the PSP community is a LOT stronger than you think and there are millions of games enjoying playing some good mature level games on the go. I love Zelda and Mario in their own right, but Gabe Logan and Solid Snake will alway trump those two.

I've been a gamer since Atari, and have owned a NES, Genesis, PS1, N64, PS2, Game Boy Pocket, DS Lite, PSP, and Gameboy Micro, and the PSP is by far my favorite. Actually give it a chance and you may be surprised how good it is. I hate people who make comments without doing research or actually using a product.

The touch screen is what makes it great for me, also maybe its...unique selection of games. I don't think too highly of the duel screen though.

Zenfolder your post made me cringe, you can't be serious. You rank up as one of the most...ignorant people I've had the displeasure of encountering on these forums.

Honestly, I have no problems with people who own both consoles, or only just a PSP. I don't think "which console is best" is anything but opinion.

My post wasn't serious. It was to let that other guy know how it feels.

I didn't mean to hurt anyones feelings, who own a PsP, but I guess I didn't think too far ahead, when flaming it.

However, don't assume I don't own a PSP and FFT:TLW, which I do. I don't own many games for the system, but I do think that it pales in comparison to my DS, in its gaming library, because the DS is backwards compatible.

I also believe that it has a much smaller userbase and community than the DS, because of its sales comparison. I also believe that many of the people who do buy a PSP don't even game on it, which pisses me off. It has quite a decent selection of games, but since it has nothing to be backwards compatible with, it can't match the DS.

That said, let me clarify:

I hate that other guy, who is a troll.

He pissed me off and I went on a tirade to make him angry.

My opinion is that the GBA is the greatest handheld of all time, the DS is second and climbing, the PSP is fourth, after the original gameboy.

I think the PSP is good in its own right, and has a loyal fanbase.

These are my honest opinions, though they aren't completely knowledgable, because I have played a lot more DS than I have PSP.

On a side note, I think my post was pretty perfect in its attempt to make PSP owners angry. That guy was the target. Read it again, knowing it is made up, and tell me that it is not the most perfect troll post about the PSP vs the DS you've ever read, lol.

It worked on 2 PSP owners so far, by accident, and one of em even wrote a rant right back at me to counteract the PSP hating.

Anyway, the original poster broke board rules. I was attempting to make him feel bad without having to report his post. :(
