Bingo. However, the first case of each game in the Phoenix Wright trilogy identifies the main characters and plot points of the previous games.

This is the correct answer, as there is a time gap between T&T and Apollo Justice. Edgeworth's game takes place during that gap.

I highly recommend you play the series in order. The Ace Attorney series isn't like Final Fantasy or Zelda where the previous game is unrelated to the sequel. It's more like a soap opera drama. If you want the whole experience you should play them in order. For Apollo Justice, you don't really need to play that last but it does help because it is related to the Ace Attorney series. And at the end, once you finish Trials and Tribulations, the final game in the Phoenix Wright saga, you'll be completely satisfied. You have to play these in order or else you won't understand some of the major cases later on.
