Usually when Nintendo repairs a console or portable it doesn't have a problem for the next ten or so years unless the user damages it.
Nintendo isn't Microsoft or Sony when it comes to game hardware reliability.
Those stores if they sell damaged systems to uninformed customers should be sued out of existance. Just contact Nintnedo. A repair would cost less then a new unit and depending upon when you bought may very well be covered by the manufactorer's warranty. Usually when Nintendo repairs a system under warranty they renew the warranty.

Who thehell would buy a used broken DS? Unless of course you swindle them.
From GameFaqs:
1. Make sure your ds is clean
2. put your lips onto the side of the shoulder button
3. Blow into it really really hard
4. press it a little bit till you see it works
5. repeat steps 2 through 4 till it works
Personally tested it...and it does work. Seriously. And I live in a country where I have to ship it abroad just to get it fixed. ^_^
